From an engineering point of view, I would say that it is not an easy task to stabilize a two-rotor system. It is a complex mathematical reaction and feedback system. The Americans succeed in it. Again. I love you!

Russia has had contra rotor helicopters for years. Not a new system. Unless you are talking about a two rotor system. Meaning the two rotors ( contra) being one system and the rear pusher being the second?

i read/heard "many" years ago that choppers can't go over about 200mph because of forward blade speed, or something like that. is there any truth to that still ?
@stevewright8312
@stevewright8312 Год назад
A single rotor which is reliant on the same blades for forward speed and lift will always have issues with the outer edges of the blades going faster than the speed of sound (the shock waves being very destructive) but as you asked about maximum speed being limited by the apparent different speed of the blade between the forward sweep and the rearward one, this is taken care of by dropping the nose using some of the lift to pull the craft forwards. During level flight there is a difference between the amount of push between the blades direction is wasted effort. So yes the maximum speed will be limited but it's laminar flow seperation that is the final limiting factor, this usually happens around 250 mph I think the record holder is a euro copper X3 AT 293MPH Twin rotors can do more speed but are still limited by the same problem, but this new US chopper has its forward drive provided by a rear facing propellor so the big rotor is only giving lift brings in different shaped blades!

how does that thing turn? like i get how it could while it's moving forward but while it's still?? is it simply slowing down one rotor and speeding one up? but then again it can also fly with a single rotor as he said in the video.
@paulthomas5860
@paulthomas5860 Год назад
I’d say slowing one. Note no tail rotor there to stop rotation due to torque, so slow one Z& you get the rotation need. But- how is rotation stopped w/one engine?

The V-280 Valor is not intended as a replacement for the V-22 Osprey. They each represent different service needs. Because the Osprey is to be used for Carrier Operations. Both Navy and on the Marine LHA/LHD ships, it has to be capable of folding up to within the dimensions of it's core body. So the wing section of it cannot be longer than the body. This in turn limits the size of the rotors that may be used. Which then gives the aircraft an extremely high "disk loading" when in a vertical hover. The engines are working at maximum to maintain the vertical lift. This was a necessary tradeoff to enable shipboard operations, but the Army has never liked this about the Osprey. The V-280 overcomes this by having a much wider wing and much larger props. Possible because they do not need to fold up. This gives it a much better and safer hover performance. They also simplified the transition on the V-280. Instead of rotating the entire engine, necessitating all of the fuel and control lines being able to rotate, The rotor is on a complex universal joint. So only the front rotor part of the nacelle pivots. The engines maintain their fixed position in all flight modes.
@jarrodcrandell5391
@jarrodcrandell5391 Год назад
The -280 is a much better aircraft than the Sikorsky offering and has taken on improving some of the V-22’s limitations head on.

The Black Hawk cannot reach speeds of over 200 mph. A clean UH-60 on a perfect day can reach about 160 knots, or 185 mph. I really like the propulsion of the Sikorsky designs. Co-axial rotors plus a pusher-prop seems the way to go. Compared to a tilt-rotor, it should be more maneuverable and have a smaller footprint. What I don't like about the attack version is the side-by-side seating. That makes for an unnecessarily fat fuselage, increasing the likelihood of getting hit by enemy fire. Also, with side-by-side seating, neither pilot is lined up with the center of the fuselage. Attack helicopter pilots are accustomed to tandem seating and they like it. I don't understand why Sikorsky is not using that seating arrangement.
