US Marines Recruits Attempt Swim Qualification

U.S. Marine Corps recruits participate in swim qualification at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The recruits learned various water survival techniques to prepare them for situations they could encounter while aboard a ship or in combat. As a part of the test, recruits learn to quickly shed heavy equipment that could pull them underwater, safely leap into deep water, use issued equipment to stay afloat and keep their heads above water while wearing a full utility uniform. The recruits are with Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion.

For everyone saying this is easy.. I'm a lifeguard and you have to be able to swim in what your wearing. It was winter and they made me swim a 300 in heavy shoes sweatpants and a sweatshirt. I'm a great swimmer and I could barely do it

I used to think I was a great swimmer until that day in boot camp. There's a major dufference between swimming and surviving. Swimming is leisure. This was meant to teach us to survive. The basics I learned here & in SEAL training eventually saved my life

I was army infantry but we did try this once and it's hard as shit with the uniform on. I know the army doesn't deal with water but it's still a great idea to incorporate this into unit training at least at one point.

swim qual for the 25m is done in 4 foot water. You get instructed that no part of your body is to touch the deck and no part of your head is allowed to touch water. Stack that with being sleep deprived, stressed, hungry and wearing a uniform and boots (which when get wet are heavy af) and having low body fat so you don't naturally float.

If you've ever swam with diving weights on or any dense weights well they basically are wearing two of them on their feet so it makes it hard to stay up so people need to stfu about them struggling

My lifeguard training was harder we had to swim on our backs with 15lbs weight on our chest and we had to tread water for 2 minutes with our hands out of the water and only using our feet to stay up

Same as 83 boot in San Diego. We did the same thing. Once we had the pants filled with air. Worked pretty good. I was and expert swimmer prior to boot. Was still a struggle when cammies and everything. I eventually was expert in swim qual. We had to dive in. Be underwater for half the pool. Slowly rise out of the water as if there was a oil fire. Was cool. Only 6 of us made it

As a swim instructor, ( for young kids ) i told the parents to dress them, with shoes ready to get into pool fully clothed. - replicating if they fell in somewhere ( w/ clothes ). & proceeded to tread water for 15 mins. Lesson very well learnt !

My hardest and scariest week also. Once I proceeded to drown, and finally made my way out the pool, I was ready to fight any Instructor who dared Order me back in. I believe he saw it in my eyes. When I raised my hand for those who couldn't swim...that's just what I meant at that time. He ordered my to take a seat. 38yrs ago, I went Un-Qual in Swimming, and it still bothers me. Then had to wait for nearly 2 years for swimming pools to reopen after the lockdown here in NYC. Finally got my swim certificate from the YMCA to then get my swim waiver. It’s just like you said I don’t want to look back and think what could have been 20 years from now, I really want to set myself up for success save money, get an education, buy a house and walk out with a mos that pays well in civilian life.

I remember that in boot camp MCRD. Full utility and sneakers, the pool was three or four meters deep, Olympic size, one end to other. A few recruits that couldn’t float, the drown proof coaches pulled them out. I am sure we did this before we ate,1967, Semper Fi!

The question is similar to, what happens if you can't make it through MIT.. You get kicked out, and you find a less intense college with less honor. In this case, watch the video. You get "motivated" a lot. (screamed at reassuringly :) ). Afterwards, if you continue to fail, you either get discharged from the military, or more likely, you get discharged from the marines and go to a less prestigous branch, and you can't say SEMPER-FI anymore, (possibly one of the few reasons why people want to be marines... jk)

This was my worst nightmare during my BT in Pendleton. I had the fear of swimming strucked by many traumatic experiences from the past. thus I never learned or know how to swim. But I managed to overcome this by remembering that I agreed to do this in the first place. there's no such thing as a Marine if he does not know how to swim in the first place.

Yeah that would wear you the hell out for my scuba certification swim test and I got to do it without steel toe boots in a swimsuit and I was 19 it was 12 laps and then tread water for 15 minutes without stopping and then swim what was the equivalency of the width of this pool in this video underwater and I thought that damn near killed me

So this stuff is actually pretty easy. I did it. What is difficult is the advanced and intermediate swim test. You have to swim a lot farther in your uniform with boots on. Tread water for a longer amount of time, and demonstrate that you know all swim techniques. However the only people who had an issue with the swim quail were people who didn’t know how to swim at all.

Matthew Wright when I was in boot camp in January 09 we had a black kid that kept unking swim qual. He ended up passing after failing countless times but one of our DI's made him dump his foot locker set it on the quarterdeck, sit in it, while paddling, singing row row row your boat. Our kill hat said "damnit if you can't swim your ass is guna learn how to row" couldn't hold the laughter in on that one quite a few people ended up getting IT'd for losing their bearing myself included.

Mr Maacin I wasn't even talking to you. But from your lack of control over your emotions I dont think you've gone through this training or basic training for that matter. Actually you might have, but youre not an officer for sure. I've seen a bunch of you basic recruits act like this and lose your cool when you hear something you dont like and there is no commanding officer around. You're in no way an officer. Matte Swe I agree, I do lifeguard training 1 hour a week in clothing that's a similar weight and I can swim better than them. This is the army they should be better than this.

ive been in the army as well...we swum in ice water with and without clothes (full packed with gears) AND NO we even didnt swim like that.

This is way harder than it looks, because of the boots and wet uniform. As for the guy with the air in his uniform, that is a survival technique that they teach.

Everyone in my platoon was all excited about going to the pool to learn swimming; then they hung lead rifles on us and attempted to drown us....the Marine Corps way of teaching I guess. The drown-proofing was very hard during training but remarkably easy after discharge, without all the pressure.

this is probably the number one thing in boot camp that makes recruits drop to another company. its not that difficult if you just stay calm. that goes for all of boot camp really.

I'm also a lifeguard and I think ff they do not wear weights besides their clothes it's quite the easy test. What might be key is how exhaustet they already are starting the test. But seeing they way they swim inefficently I really wonder if they ever swam a mile before.

That's what I did so I can be a lifeguard, but the. I realized, they are wearing heavy clothes and have to do this everyday, props to these guys, my body was sore for the next week after doing it for only one day
