Reasons why I believe Jason WAS also switched 1) he always wore that creepy mask 2) the summer before; he went missing while on vacation just like his mom.. 3) he forgot how to do his magic trick but remember; his clone could do the trick, thats how he was burned. 4) he had no rhythm, his mom was teaching him how to snap his fingers to the beat but remember his clone was snapping his fingers on beat like MJ 5) at the beach he was digging tunnels not making castles! 6) his mother knew, thats why they had such a special bond. 7) the look he shared with his mom at the end

I really liked the artistic style of this movie, the colors, the sound, etc. But the silly humor was unbearable to me! A definite deal breaker. And a lot of dialogue at end didn't make sense. I caught the twist right at the beginning of the movie. That's mostly the writer & filmmaker in me, and that I've see and heard this so much about the image in the mirror swapping places with you. So, yes, I knew it and predicted the film but did it ruin it for me? Nope. I love this movie, and I really don't believe that Jason was swapped because the more you really think about it, it doesn't make sense. I believe he's the way he is because he's half tethered-half human, same with the other kids, and since he's more attached to his mom is why I think he's a bit off.

I can see what you mean about the text card at the beginning. Apparently that was originally not in the movie. It was added later on. I liked it just because it added this layer of mystery and spookiness to the beginning of the movie. Maybe I'm just easily spooked.
@gatorboydomino

15:20 - One could argue that the reason this was added at the beginning was to further explain how the tethered communicated and organized the revolt amongst themselves. like how else could Red get her ideas halfway across the country? The tunneling system.

I'm honestly baffled by all the great reviews of this movie, I don't think I've ever watched a movie with so many integral plot holes. But even without the plot holes the movie was more funny than scary, and the only memorable thing about it was the music, the visuals and the great performance by Lupita Nyongo.
@isoutoforbit

@8NT8 I'm not sure what's your point, this movie wasn't advertised as a comedy/horror. The others you mentioned were, and I'm fully aware that if done right movies like that can work. This did not, the comedy felt out of place. You're acting as if this movie invented the idea of a doppelgänger in movies, it did not and it not do it very well. But again, the more you think about it as you say, the more you realise it has so many plot holes and impossibilities within the plot, that it feels like it just wasn't thought through, which is just lazy writing. If you're satisfied with that and can ignore all the things that make no sense, then go for it, you're easily pleased, I am not.

@aaronalford719

You’re completely right. The main reason I couldn’t enjoy this film was due to the major plot holes and inconsistencies. I kept sighing and smacking my palm against my forehead because of the nonsensical turns the script made. Then, with all of the exposition at the end, I almost turned it off, it was so frustrating. Lazy writing, like you said. The humor was good, if not out of place. Totally overhyped, but that’s what happens when you allow social commentary to contaminate the craft: the art becomes pretentious.

kinda have to disagree, I don't really consider it a horror movie. I just personally did not find it scary at all, more like a thriller? For me it was kinda like what you said about Velvet Buzzsaw, the trailer and promotion for Us as the "scariest movie of all time" just didn't match up to the actual film. I did enjoy it though, just not really what I was expecting.

@@lovealways002 A couple times there were jokes that were made during completely serious/scary moments... and they were 100% out of place and ruined the tension. When they said the movie was funny, I just expected it to have funny moments during parts of the film that had no tension... Once the tension begins... IS NOT when you ramp up the comedy. That is not how horror film making works. This film was falsely advertised. It should have been advertised as a horror-comedy because thats exactly what it is. I didn't get any "horror-comedy" vibes from the trailers at all. Get Out was a million times better than this film. This one had its moments, and it was a cool concept... but I think it would've been a lot better just as a horror film and not as a horror-comedy.
@lovealways002

@@Janjibro66 Yes, that's why I was disappointed in it. Because the trailers and promotion for it was heavily rooted in selling it as a horror movie. I don't mind some comedy but like you said, it was just completely out of place and would ruin the "horror" aspects of the movie

I loved the soundtrack and imagery of this movie, it had some really great shots and angles but I think the last twist doesnt really make sense looking back at some of the dialogue and scenes. I dont understand why the real Lupita who spent time underground would want to come back and kill the real children, since shes real she would know that none of the regular humans were aware of this. It's not the regular families fault that they had to live like this, more realistically they should have all risen up and attacked the government but that would have been to on the nose for the social commentary i guess.
@spills56
@spills56 5 лет назад
she didn't necessarily come back to kill the family; she came back to get revenge on Red. if she wanted to kill the family, she easily could've been like "gurl BYE" and killed them at the beginning but she wanted to torture the kids so Red could really feel the full extent of Adelaide's revenge. Red probably came out bc she wanted a taste of real life, and her children are an aspect of that, and Adelaide took that into consideration and carefully planned out her revenge, as she herself even said. but i do agree that this movie is just shot so beautifully, and the score is AMAZING. i also think that it's a VERY strong social commentary about the classes in america wrapped up in a red jumpsuit and golden scissors;)
@DailydoseofPharaoh
@DailydoseofPharaoh 5 лет назад
The above kids aren’t her kids tho, she was switched around the age of 7... so the kids were really the tethered children. She wouldn’t have a connection but I still don’t think she was trying to kill them.

I think the twist is perfect because regardless of whether or not you caught on, it will be satisfying and devastating to the viewer. I also enjoyed that it was hinted at and heavily foreshadowed and ultimately not mindblowing. It's something you're afraid of that you don't want to be true, but if it was true then everything would make more sense, but you really don't want it be, but -- oh fuck there it is... @@Edolloz1191 To add another, why was the tether so inconsistent. Adelaide had her own free will once she ran into Red when they were kids, knocked her out and chained her up all on her own. If that's the case why did the tether seemingly reconnect for Red down below, if she was retethered how did she get the other shadows to break it, we hear her say they followed her because she was different but if every shadows tether was broken so they could plan this gigantic uprising why did they seemingly continue copying their real life counterparts to the point that they met their real counterparts SOs and had kids. One of my favorite hints at the twist was when the mom was going after her son into the tunnel, and when she’s in the hall of mirrors, she seems to know exactly where to kick (a painted rabbit) to find the door to go down into the tunnels. Another tiny thing was that the daughter was wearing a shirt with a bunny on it at the beginning of the movie. That may just be an Easter egg, but if you look at it with the perspective that maybe the mom bought it for her with intention, it’s a little more interesting. I know that you don’t do many psych videos anymore, but just an idea, it’d be super interesting if you analyzed the psychology behind a child growing up in that tunnel environment or just another similar situation like that.

I'm very surprised that you didn't mention any of the MAJOR holes in the plot of this movie. How are the tethered able to revolutionize against the people above ground if they are supposed to mimic their behavior? The scene where "RED" is underground shows that everyone was doing exactly as their counterparts were so it didn't seem like they had control of turning that behavior off. Also, this might be trivial but who the fuck would buy a beach house in the exact location where they would last want to be and also NOT want to go to the beach? Also, if Jason could control his counterpart the entire time with his movements.. Wouldn't that have helped the family much earlier? Doesn't make sense. I respect that you enjoyed the movie and enjoyed your review, but you gotta mention dem holes lol. I think a lot of people are focusing all of their attention on the "easter eggs" in the movie rather than noticing the non-sensical details

@@martiniquecordeiro167 that is an interesting thought! Could definitely be, but they probably should've mentioned that somewhere lol. Just saw the movie a few hours ago so I can now finish your review. Wow, what a movie!! I loved it and am still trying to take it all in. I didn’t see the twist ending coming so bravo Jordan , excellent film.

As soon as we saw the opening scene, I was wondering if the girls had switched places lol I loved your review! I hadn’t picked up on the social commentary at all. I definitely think Us is more of a horror movie, but I like Get Out as a movie better.

I think it was overhyped a little but also we all misinterpreted what it was gonna be. They did a good job at keeping the movie mostly a mystery in the trailer. I loved this movie though. I’m not a big collector is horror, I still love horror though and would love Peeles movies to be in my collection. I also love that we can pick it apart and find so much meaning in it. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Awesome review...absolutely loved the movie ,for me decoding the movie is part of the fun. The only slight problem with the movie was little technical details like how did they get the suites and scissors .but knowing it was more symbolic is good enough for me

I find Get Out is a true horror film as a POC (specifically black). I think that’s why it’s controversial because the horror elements don’t apply to everyone in the audience. But Us is arguably better than Get Out

I really liked the first frame with the tunnel text and the last frame. I feel like it's easy to get wrapped up in the main story but it really becomes terrifying to me when we got shown that this is looming on a larger scale. I definitely understand that it's not absolutely necessary, but it gave me chills when I connected the opening text with the last frame and realized it was happening all over the country. Apocalyptic aspects are really scary to me. Great review! I love hearing everyone's thoughts and theories about Us because there is so much to dissect. I personally liked Get Out more because it was more of a cohesive story and kept me at the edge of my seat until the very end whereas Us left me with too many questions. I absolutely love both movies though and can't wait to see what else Jordan Peele does.

Great review! I loved the range of horror genres this film moves through. It started off as something psychological, then transitioned into a home invasion thriller, slasher film, and then a broader social commentary tale. I also totally appreciated the payoff of all the details and moments of foreshadowing! ---- SPOILERS BELOW ---- After watching the movie for a second time, I think there is definitely some credence to the theory that Jason is also a tether. There are parts of it that don't fully make sense, so I'm not completely sold on the idea, but there is certainly something different about him than the other members of the family.

This movie terrified me more thoroughly than almost any other horror I've seen. It was the closest I've ever seen to my own worst nightmares brought to life on screen, and the building of tension and anxiety throughout the film was masterful.

I respect your opinion and actually agree with a majority of your reviews. I actually loved get out very much, but I could not get into this one at all. I honestly couldn’t find one redeeming quality about it. Everyone says it’s so groundbreaking, but I’ve seen it before in horror and I’ve seen it done much better. Again, just my opinion, but definitely respect that people like it. Keep up the good work

I love the little scene on the beach when she's talking and the other chick trying to have a conversation and she say she has trouble having conversations! I didn't really find the movie all that scary, but I still think it was absolutely incredible. With all of the symbolism packed inside of it and there are so many theories that I'm hearing about every day and I love when there are things to talk about in a film that is not just the plot. I also had feeling that she had been switched as soon as I saw her Tethered in the maze so the ending was all that shocking to me. :/ He should've shown real Adelaide running away and then making it back to her parents and then when revealing the twist could've had a flashback where Red caught up to her and dragged her into the tunnels. I think it would've made it a little bit more effective so people wouldn't catch on too fast. Also I agree with you, why tell us that there are tunnels in the beginning of the movie? We could all understand by just literally watching the movie that it's happening all across America lmao. Either way, great film. Loved your review, you should do a video just talking about all of the symbolism though. I'd love to see it.

I just saw it today and i really enjoyed it. I honestly didn’t think it was that scary, however. I think the trailer made it look scarier than it was (more jump scares etc) but i still really really enjoyed it. It’s so interesting to read other people’s thoughts and theories on it, and what different things might mean. jordan peele is such a great writer and director and i truly can’t wait to see what he does next.

What is great is about Peele is that he is bringing that auteur approach to mainstream horror. It is refreshing and expands the perception of horror --- that it's not just all jump scares, but can be rich in nuance and meaning. That's not to say auteur horror didn't exist before Peele, or that symbols/commentary can't be found in even B Horror films. But Peele intentions are clear and he reaches a very wide audience and will bring out viewers who normally don't watch horror. The film wasn't as scary as I had hoped, but kept me on my toes the whole time because I kept wondering what thing meant or symbolized. It was harder for me to watch just on surface level, which I guess is not always desirable. I did like the film. It is the kind of horror that can leave you with this sense of dread vs. being afraid to be alone in the dark. It is more original and sophisticated and ambitious than Get Out, but don't know if I liked it more. Either way, I hope this marks a renaissance of horror in Hollywood. Based on his two films, I think Peele is only going to get better. Really impressive movies for someone who never did it before and came outta sketch comedy! Who knew??

Caught the twist right away. I loved Get Out but I came out of this film going 'meh'. I think it was well done all around but this story just didn't grab me. I also didn't really 'see' the social commentary so I enjoyed what you and your boyfriend came up with it. I see what you guys mean with the classes. Much more subtle that in Get Out so it just sort of blew right by me. Felt the same way about the tunnel text at the beginning too.

I hate commenting twice but I decided to share this. We develop speech at a young age but Adelaide was probably 5 or 6 when she was taken underground. Her speech was still developing and then she was stuck with the Tethered. The Tethered had been abandoned generations ago. I doubt they were ever taught to speak. We learn to speak from our early caregivers. There are several critical milestones for speech (both comprehension and mimicking) that occur from birth. It can be very difficult to acquire language if a child is completely isolated from speaking individuals. It is rare, nigh impossible for speech to be acquired after puberty. Imagine generations of people that have never heard speech. So Adelaide hadn't used speech for 30 years from the age of 5. She had acquired a decent grasp of it but sounding out the words is difficult. She would need speech therapy to re-establish the use of her vocal chords as well as practicing difficult sounds.

I was late to the party, and just watched Us last week. Yes, there are some major plot holes. However, some of the imagery was so disturbing to me that I’m still thinking about it a week later. I watched it at home alone, and I was uncomfortable the majority of the movie. Some of the imagery was just so intense for me and I loved that! I enjoyed the symbolism, and I enjoyed myself throughout it. It’s not a rewatch for me, but thinking about it a week later means it made an impact on me for sure! I liked Get Out, but I was not as obsessed with it as others. I think I liked Us, the imagery, symbolism, ideas, etc. more than Get out but I think they were both enjoyable films.

I felt that the commentary in the beginning was really interesting because it is an actual fact! and I believe what inspired Peele to use this concept for his movie. To this day no one knows why there are all these tunnels all across the world. Also, the last scene felt impactful because it was a commentary on how without a leader, most social movements die and don't really change the conditions for the lower-classes if they aren't educated on how to take leadership (couldn't communicate).

I also didn’t catch the twist but when it was revealed I was like how tf didn’t I catch that 😂😂 it was so obvious. Also I’m so conflicted with the whole Jason thing but I’m leaning towards him getting switched out because there’s a lot of evidence supporting that 🤯
@Fuckinlazyeye

see, i actually thought that red and adelaide were so tethered that their minds switched easily, because of the mother reaching out to the tethered kids, and the look she gives her son, she can talk well but grunted when killing her clone, etc., so yeah i thought that they were just so tethered that they switched and that's why both of them had the traits that they did

Now about if I called it early on, I did. I told my husband immediately after that first scene in the house or mirrors. I figured she either died or she switched. Then I kinda gathered a bit more once her parents were doing the therapy and wanting their little girl back. Then again when they were all in the house and she could speak. I love love love LOVED when she said We are Americans.

And is disagree with the notion that you can enjoy US as a literal horror film. There are just too many plot holes and things that don´t make sense that are in there to specifically serve the symbolism. Without interpreting some of the metaphors you´re not going to get the best film experience.
