I think what was most interesting about the comedy element of this film was that the "jokes" usually came from Chris or his best friend and they always seemed to be really natural reactions to the weird shit going on. I forget exactly what some of their reactions were but I just remember thinking the same exact thing in my head moments before they said it. It's refreshing to see REAL responses and dialogue in a horror film.

I agree. Like he is telling his friend about all the red flags he is seeing. He is just in denial of and doesn't want to admit or he doesn't see them at all.

The fruit loops symbolism toward the end where she separated the colored pieces from the white milk really got to me. That was my favorite symbolism in the movie.

At the very end of this film, half the people in the theater clapped. The last time I heard people clap in a theater was at the end of Jackie during a special release. I've never heard anyone clap at the end of a horror, unless of course it was something where they were like "Oh my god I'm glad this is over!" I'm looking at you, Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension.
@taylortimeless

They clapped in my theater too! When the cop car pulled up and it was his friend.

I really thought that it'd end with him getting caught by the police and of course getting imprisoned for life because he's black and so he'll be 100x more likely to be blamed for everything than a white man in that situation would. I'm glad it didn't end that way, while that'd be a powerful message I think a good ending for him is essential for the audience to feel satisfied

Omg I know this topic and the reality of hyperincarceration with black people and black men especially is an awful reality and something everyone needs to work together to fix, but this comment made me laugh. Like that’s awful but sometimes you have to laugh at the most awful things in the world to cope and not literally just feel rage all day.

*SPOILER ALERT* After the movie is over the story that Rose's brother tells at the dinner table (the story about how Rose bit the tongue of a guy she was making out with in high school) becomes very humorous because it basically foreshadows everything we find out about Rose later in the movie. She lures in her victims with love and then attacks.

Hey Sarah! I had a series idea for your channel. I was wondering if you could could start a vintage horror movie section, for earlier horror movies like Rosemary's baby or sisperia (think that's how you spell it.....) anyways, I though that maybe would be cool. Ps. Sorry for my crappy grammar

I really like this movie, especially, like you said, the gradual discomfort throughout the movie. The only thing I didn't get was why Georgina, Walter and the guy with the hat acted SO strangely. They were creepily smiling and oddly polite. It seemed like they were hypnotised all the time, while they should actually act like the people they were before (Rose's grandparents and some old guy), only in another body, right?
@Nocturnalux
@Nocturnalux 6 лет назад
I think that's because how they thought servants should act. In old movies, black servants are often shown exactly like that. They smile all the time, over-articulate their lines and are polite to the point of weirdness. Rose's grandparents either had servants who acted like that or more likely, grew up on movies that showed how 'the Help' was supposed to behave around their betters. I bet when no-one is around they don't put on this creepy act but when they have to 'play' servants, they default to what they think should be the proper way of behavior.

I think another reason for the deer scene is because when chris first arrives he is prey to the family in the same way a doe is to a hunter. He has no way to defend himself. And in the end he uses the antlers to kill them. This could symbolize he is not longer defenseless maybe

@allie1914
@allie1914 7 лет назад
For me I guessed that she was in on it because she seemed kinda 'too perfect' and I interpreted her character as kind of a fake ally - like when she stood up for him with the cop, she seemed like the perfect white girlfriend if that makes sense and then as soon as they were at the auction bit it was obvious because they had a picture of him which she must have sent to her parents who she claimed didn't know he was black (Chris obviously didn't see this so he wouldn't have known she was in on it) up until that point I was suspicious about her and then when I saw the picture at the auction I saw that as a confirmation that she was part of it

Im so glad you enjoyed this movie! I really liked how you touched base on all the different themes this movie addresses, however Jordan Peele himself has stated that this movie is less about racism and more about white liberals and their interpretation of what it means to be "woke" i.e. when Rose's father says he would have voted for Obama a third time. It's sort of playing off white liberals who try so hard to be woke that they end up being racist and making minorities uncomfortable themselves by patting themselves on the back for being "progressive".

Very, very late to this video. Great review!! This was the first big theater move i saw with a horror movie group id just joined. I didnt know anyone and was the only black person. We all loved this movie!! One think id like to mention that i dont think anyone has said was that the "a mind is a terrible thing to waste" was a slogan the United Negro College Fund when i was a kid but i never thought the movie would be able replacing minds. Also in a later interview Jordan Peele said that no matter ur status, being the only black person in a room is uncomfortable. And it is. Anyway, great great review!!

I know this is old buuuut I gotta be completely honest about this movie right now because I've only JUST NOW seen it. While I think the plot is refreshing and the POV is important since it exposes real-life problems and shows the world that black people (including myself) truly do love horror movies. That being said, my unpopular opinion is that this movie is a bit overrated and overblown for what it is. Yes, there are creepy characters and moments, but the movie feels more like suspense than horror. And if I'm being more honest, I think it was way over hyped up BECAUSE of the subject matter. I feel that people feel inclined to say that liked this movie more than they actually did simply due to the subject matter and the popularity of the director (whom I think is talented and brilliant). This is just my unpopular opinion. That being said...I am so looking forward to the release of 'Us', it looks fantastic!

i couldn't finish it, everything felt so forced. It reminded me of Stepford Wives kinda (which was a pretty good one), but like it's as if they wanted to make it awkward. I, as a black person tho, can't really judge the political stance of this movie being canadian and haitian. So I have no idea what it's like being a black-american in the US, therefore can't really put out a clear opinion of it. I like the idea of the movie, but not what i saw of it.
@Severalorangepeels
@Severalorangepeels 7 лет назад
Yeah this movie was super well done. Politically I feel like it did a really good job of making the audience feel Chris's discomfort and the discomfort a lot of black people experience without having to exaggerate it. And as a horror movie in general it was really disturbing in a more subtle way. I love movies that leave you thinking and this one definitely did that.

SPOILER**** I had a feeling Rose was in on it too bc the whole time she seemed so off almost? Honestly, I felt like it was her acting ( Allison Williams) and she just seemed kinda fake the whole time! But when I saw the trailer, I had hoped that she wasn't gonna be in on it or that she would be a part of it. It was such a good film though, the best part about watching it in the theater was the reaction of the audience.
