You need to respect her more and put her name in the title. Mariah Bell is a very talented athlete, and an Olympian and deserves the respect.

I met a blind skater once who had people stationed around the rink at a competition to shout "boards" if she was too close and to guide her. She warmed up holding her coach's hand.

So she didn't get her name in the title of the video when Nathan Chen and Adam Rippon both had theirs... Why, exactly? She is literally the reigning US National Champion. Disappointingly clear-cut misogyny GQ.

What makes the "spotlight" trope so irritating is that movies often show competitions happening in normal lighting, and then when the protagonist comes on the ice, the lights dim and the spotlight turns on. (I'm thinking specifically of Ice Princess.)

Fun fact: Adam Rippon, who did the Part 1 of this video, is her coach.

Lol, when she was talking about the toe picks, all I kept thinking of was the original Cutting Edge movie, where the hockey player was learning with figure skates and kept getting caught by the toe pick, and every time he fell down his partner was just like "toe pick" :)

My mother, who is legally blind, and her friends, some of whom are completely blind, learned to roller skate in school. They loved it. When she roller skated with me as a kid, I didn't think it was any big deal. Other parents roller skated, so it made sense to me that she did. It was only when I was older that I learned that sighted people were both really impressed and really concerned at the same time.

when she talked about how a triple axel couldn't be done by someone that young, my immediate thought was that eteri tutberidze is probably crazy enough to test that with her students

She's the coach behind the string of one hit wonders we've seen at the Olympics in ladies singles, starting with Yulia Lipnitskaya at Sochi in 2014 and continuing with Valieva, Trusova, and Scherbakova at Beijing 2022. She trains her students to skate in a way that only works with underweight teenagers, not adults. So none of her pupils ever skate long enough to get to the Olympics twice. This was Valieva, Trusova, and Scherbakova's first and last Olympics. Their replacements are already competing at the junior level 😬

I've known Mariah for a while now but never watch her off-ice, and now I regret it! she seems so nice & is super informative here, I actually learned a lot even though I'm already a figure skating fan lol. her way of explaining and making examples is so good, I wish I noticed her (off-ice) sooner.

Maria Bell is so stinking cute! Her and Alysa Liu were my favorite at the Olympics. You could feel the excitement and joy radiating off both of them. I felt uplifted and happy after watching their performances.

Mariah, I remember when I first watched "Blades of Glory" in the theaters, and I could not stop laughing. The galloping peacock and "there are very few women..." coming out of the announcer's mouth... OMG... soooo funny !!! we used to do power skating/edgework skating classes with hockey and figure skaters when i was a kid, core memory unlock of skating around in circles and doing lots of crossovers.

I think what Mariah was talking about in the last one was hydroblading. It's one of the moves that are commonly associated with Yuzuru Hanyu, but it's a common move. The reason his are special is that his hydroblading is generally done on an extremely deep edge.

For Kiss and Cry I was like... wait, is that TCC?? And apparently it was, lol.

Fun fact: yes some competions can be in spotlight especially common in ISI skating! Also there is visual impaired skaters that do compete. It's not common but it does happen 🤗

I think part of the reason the rinks are dark with spotlights is that it's easier to hide the skating double if it's dark.

i actually skated at a rink where the boards r up to my knees and im a short person so these boards r very low and me and my synchro team where doing duck under spirals and we almost fell on the boards cuz we always have been skating at rinks with normal sized boards and it was competition day so everyone was so nervous. it was basically a hot mess

Blades of Glory skater would be in something like the Ice Capades. That is entertainment skating. Wonderful in it's own right, but not for competition.

For the spin at the end, the girl only did 2 rotations bc they only count it once youre in the position so honestly she would really just not get any points on that bc of the fact that it didn't even reach the standard rotation rule

Fun Fact: The guy that wanted to coach the girl in Ice Girls is 2 time Olympic Silver medalist Elvis Stojko!!!!!!!!!

At the start the move the skating couple does, where the man is holding the woman by one foot and swinging her. Mariah says the pairs really do this but without throwing her in the air. That's not really correct. This movement is not allowed in the games, you only sometimes see it in exhibitions, but not in competitions.
