Agree, this will spread a wave on uncertainty to the market around the world, including the US. On BOTH sides there will be companies, businesses and people loosing, while others temporary winning. However no one will walk out as the winner. If trade wars were beneficial, they would be ongoing all the time. But it is the opposite, therefore deals, compromises have been done. Secondly it affects relationships and partnerships around the globe, and at some point, one can ask, will the US be safer and wealthier with that?

I'm trying to recall when we in the U.S started to think we were invincible with regards to the rest of the world.Not only with trade, but pretty much anything else. I can't understand why we here think we can go it alone. I agree the U.S is a large part of the world economy at 25%, but that means the rest of the world is 75%. Together they could do real harm to us and we are taunting them to just try it. I never hear anyone here in this country stating what possible barriers we throw up to other economies. I am sure there are many as well. China is the real adversary regarding world trade with oversupply of products of all kinds. The American politicians have decided to fight them alone as well instead of digging in with our allies. Even the thought of Trumps future actions has forced our allies to look for tariff free areas to get and sell their wares. Canada is going so far as to create a new pipeline to the west coast because they don't trust the U.S regarding the purchase of their oil.I don't blame them as the U.S has shown it will not respect any agreement already in place with nations friend or foe. Let's remind everyone one at this point, Canada took the US to the WTO court three times, in the 90's, for duties the US put on soft wood lumber from Canada. Each time the WTO found Canada was in compliance and decided the tariffs were not legal and the money collected (several billion dollars) by the US from the tariffs should be returned. That judgment was never acted on by the US (was largely ignored). Eventually the US held out long enough that the terms, conditions or rules were adjusted enough to justify the tariffs. That was clearly an end run around the letter of the law of the day, so don't be surprised if this is how the German WTO suit will be dealt with. I learned from this international trade dispute that rules are only rules when adherence to them favors the US (they will move the goal posts and only a fool would trust Trump to keep his word).
