Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. FYI. The "Tipping" thing is in fact a result of Federal Policy in the USA and YES, its gotten way out of hand. Up until about the 80's being a Waiter/ Waitress in the USA paid minimum wage PLUS TIPS, and if you worked for an expensive restaurant you could in fact have this as a decent job and make good money and make a living. The Restaurant industry complained how much their workers were making and got a law passed that allows them to pay HALF of minimum wage. So now you will get paid $3 or $4 dollars an hour, something like that, PLUS tips and the restaurants started a campaign of making tipping 15% the norm. There is now quite a backlash forming, so bad in fact, the last trip I took to New Orleans, the menus now have a CASH column and a CREDIT column on the menus to encourage you to pay cash which is a lower price and that puts control of the tips back to the patron and allows the workers to pocket the money without Federal oversite. In the USA when you see a problem in industry you can almost always trace it back to some stupid law that was passed.

You need to come to Canada. Not just British Columbia and Alberta / Rockies. We are a big country with a lot nature to explore. Many provincial and national parks. Hopefully I can watch you travel here some day..

While I agree with you on the history question, I would like to point out something most people forget about. Especially in the western part of the US, there are many historical Native American sites that are very old, more than 1,000 years. Folks tend to remember only what happened since Europeans came to the country, but people have been here more than 20,000 years.

And in New Mexico there are religious sites that pre-date Christ with constant worshipers. The established US has a newer history but no shortage of its own significant sights/sites. The UK has some old buildings and Viking artifacts but the US has ancient cliff dwellers and proof of human habitation that predates any in the UK. Point should have gone to the US.

Some places are now making the tipping competitive by giving people a list of the names of the workers and giving people the option to tip exclusively to specific workers. So you will get better service and people won't get a living wage. These employers know that there are bad employees that ride the coattails of good employees. They have plans for this and they are not good plans trust me. 😆

People say they make $2.13 an hour, that's a lie straight up. In chef school we was learned they'd is a minimum pay by law say the law has it $7.50 then that's what you make per hour not $2.13. And depends on the server job they can make more than most people in 1 night for some people in a week. Say a good server on a good night is $300-600 a night. So get off the servers don't make money. Now a server can make less money depends on their service, yeah I have left a Penny on a note explaining their service and the reason why they got the Penny, few weeks later I go back they improved from that Penny note and ended up being a good server and now could deserve a tip

You are going to the wrong RV parks in the US if you are spending that much per night, we took a circa 2,800 mile RV trip from Louisiana, to the Badlands, and Mount Rushmore, then over to Hannibal, Missouri, and Hot Springs, Arkansas before returning home in May. On that trip the most we spent was $54 per night at one RV park, with all other campgrounds having at least water and electric hookups ranging from $18 to $36 per night, with at least 3 location being in $22-$25 per night range, as well as 5 nights doing free off grid camping.

Americans naturally tend to help you when you have a car breakdown. I've seen and experienced it in Texas and Colorado. We had an RV breakdown in 2021 in a remote area in Colorado and the roadside assistance can only come on the following day. There was a small community nearby and saw us. They approached us and helped us figure out how to fix the RV. They brought their tools and they were able to fix the brake on my RV without asking for us to pay. They even asked if we needed food or water. I experienced countless friendliness, especially in the southern part of the US.

Very good. This is generally not necessary in the UK because the roadside assistance people can get just about anywhere. But we do occasionally do have major weather disasters, where people snowed in in their cars have been offered shelter and support by locals. As a teenager, I remember having a flat tyre on my bike, and random strangers came to my aid. People come together in a crisis: it's just that because of its weather, geography and size, there are more likely to be such crises in the US.

She may have family or friends here and newsflash, she obviously has internet. Yes bad food choices were made. I think they were going for what a place is known for. Florida is known for conch fritters and keylime pie. Salads, not so much.

As an American I’ve only been to the UK twice. In 2000 I flew a new airplane from France to the USA with a stop overnight in Glasgow. Everybody there was so nice. Last summer I spent four days in London. Just after walking up the 580 steps to the top of St John’s I got on a crowded underground train. A nice old Brit looked at me standing and got up and offered me his seat. I told him I was fine, I had just climbed the stairs to the top of St John’s. He sat back down and said, your in better shape than me then. Everyone was delightful! I want to visit more of your country.

As a fellow Brit, I was flabbergasted that 'truck stops' had supermarkets etc., as what comes into my mind when I hear that term is a layby where commercial vehicle drivers will climb up over their the cabs to bed down for the night, possibly provided nearby with a single Portaloo, if they are lucky. Why ever did they call it a 'truck stop'?? Everyone over here refers to what they had in mind as a 'service station'. You can't call that a 'truck stop' with a British accent - it was just too confusing!

I honestly think that there are so many great things about both countries. The difference really boils down to the fact that the US is just so much larger and more diverse in terms of landscape and people. I was in the UK in summer of 2022 and really had a wonderful time. The people I encountered were so friendly and welcoming. To be fair, I was there in summer, which I suppose had people in generally more agreeable moods. I didn't get to experience the dark, rainy cold of winter there which I figure leads to more of a not so wonderful disposition. One thing you are most definitely right about is the Indian food. It is so damn good in the UK. I also had the pleasure of having an Indian meal prepared for me by my friend at his place in Daventry. The kindness and just overall hospitality he and his family showed me was wonderful. One thing that I really enjoyed as well, was the full English breakfast with a nice cup of tea. Hard to beat that!

In all actuality there are more historical locations in the US than the UK. You've just never heard of them. There are over 50 in the county I live in. I'll also argue cost. Not counting fuel, (which is cheaper here), I can camp for less than $500 a month on average, but when boondocking it costs me nothing. What runs up your costs is fast food and pricy tourist attractions.

Well, I've been in England a couple of times, Scotland once, and Wales once. I would say that Scotland, by far, has the nicest people in the UK. I don't particularly care for the food in the UK, so I would give that point back to the US. Overall, I guess it would come very close to a draw. I live in Oklahoma, so we're glad that we have Emma as a citizen of our fair state. Whatever and wherever you go, we all love you both so much!!!! xoxoxo

Agreed, British food generally is a bit bland. And I have to give 100 points to the US for being the best at BBQ. However, I have to forgive them for calling hamburgers "sandwiches". What the heck is with that, LOL?

And the other day I had a banana split at a US Dairy QUeen that was devoid of tasty ice-cream (and devoid of banana!). American BBQ is better than Briish BBQ, but then British bacon is SO much tastier than American. Compared to the Indian, Thai and Chinese food in the UK, most American food is indeed bland. But I agree about the sandwiches thing - weird.

I've camped a bunch in both, although to be honest, it was usually tent camping in the UK. I was so over being wet, muddy and cold all the time in the corner of some farmer's field. We live in the Western US now and there is something to be said of being able to camp year round in pretty good weather. Not many people like camping in January in the UK. It can be weeks of constant rain sat in a tiny van and getting stuck in the mud. In the US there are fab places to camp in January. We've road tripped for close to 25 years in the western US and still have so many places we haven't been and really want to go. One nice thing is you can really get away from everything and everyone. We've been an hour or two from home in San Diego and camping where we couldn't see or hear another person for 24 hours at a time. It's really hard to do that in the UK (especially outside of Scotland) but there are so many places you can do that in the US.

I also have had the pleasure of living in the UK, albeit for only two years while being assigned there in the Air Force and visiting it several times in the enduring sixty-three years. Seventy-seven years of my life have been in California and the last five years have been in Las Vegas, Nevada. Having said all of that, I must admit that I totally agree with your scoring in today's video. I must add however that when I am in the UK, I am never homesick for here but when I am here, I frequently long to be there.

Okay so I will say... You guys have really only experienced the National Parks. I live in the northeast (NY) and we have really decent prices for the state campsites and we have a lot of free use camping here as well! I think anytime you go where there are a lot of people, they charge touristy prices. You can find reasonable prices for your stays and meals etc. I encourage you guys to go on the road less traveled for van life/RVing and eplore some locations that aren't as widely documented on RU-vid! (I'd say the northeast, but I'm biased!)

You haven't tried the Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Argentinian, Colombian, Cuban, Peruvian, and more. The food is really diverse in the US.

We have the same in the UK really, especially in cities. Less Central/South American but more West African/Jamaican and Asian. Even small villages will normally have a Chinese and an Indian restaurant. Both countries have a lot of immigration.

True but the US has southern BBQ added onto the huge diversity of foods. Look up the videos of those two British guys (JOLLY) eating BBQ for the first time. Then also watch them eating from Buc-ees as well. They were dumbfounded by how good these things were. 😁

Not sure how many US truck stops you've been to, we have the biggest and most diverse in the world. You can get almost anything at some of them. Even a random NJ Turnpike stop has 3 or 4 fast food choices, coffee, gift shops, etc.

You want to talk about size? One state (Alaska) is more the 6 times the size of the UK. 663,268 sq miles to 94,530 sq miles. We took the Alaska State Ferry from Haines AK to Washington, 4 days on the ferry and we had to drive 750 miles to get to the ferry, plus we had to drive through another country, Canada. Good video

There is a National yearly parks pass in US. Admits the passholder plus 3 adults in the same vehicle and kids under 15 are always free. May be worth it for camping spots plus national park adventures

I'm surprised that you mentioned the wildlife encounters in the US without mentioning the bad encounters (the mice and the flies) 😅 I think what this boils down to is that in most areas, the US has extremes and those can be good or bad but they don't do the middle ground whereas I feel like the UK has the middle ground most of the time. This means that if the big negatives put you off, you have to be okay with not having the big positives too An excellent discussion, thank you 😊

Fun vid, you sassy Beans! I must say though, watching "van life" vids and builds, like on Nate Murphy and seeing a fair amount of UK van lifers, they seem to be much more preoccupied and worried about break ins and getting ripped off. Also, it's so enjoyable that so many historical sights in the Eastern half of the US pertain to us giving a massive middle finger to George the III and the UK. 😂

I'm 76 & in the old days "shootings" & "extreme weather" wasn't even in our vocabulary. But, unfortunately that was then & this is now. Still, we're talking van life and camping. So, just the whole "sea to shining sea" - America is vast and I'd think a camper's paradise. London, to me, is about all the free museums, culture and beer pubs. I love London!

We stay on the Oregon coast in state campgrounds. Full hookups are only $32 a night and regular sites are as low as $22/night and they have nice showers and flush toilets. Very clean very safe very nice. Come to the west coast when you come back

Campsites used to be reasonable in the U.S. until travel channels and RV and vanlife went crazy. People also got the idea of living in their van or RV staying at campsites for long term, so like landlords, they up the price. Probably to keep long term campers away too.

When it comes to the weather I have to vote for my USA. I live in Phoenix Arizona. Yes the Summers are brutal, but it may be 100 degrees here but a few hours drive and you are in the mountains and 70 degrees.

Great video guys!! Fun comparisons! Have you been to Chicago? The food choices here are hands down amazing. I’m going to say I think variety of food is better in the US!! Also, I camp in the Midwest - campsites in WI and IL state parks are around $20-$30 a night and National forest camp sites are $10-$15 a night. It sounds like Colorado is expensive- but not all of US is that expensive to camp. Private campgrounds with amenities are pricey, but I’ve never camped those resort type places.

OKLAHOMA BORN AND RAISED- Both my husband and myself! We camp often but not across country, only in Oklahoma, since our family is all here. We stay in campgrounds and trailer parks. My husband is Native American and we stay on tribal grounds, also.

I think this is a win-win. Great places to see and facilities too. I'd add in Canada, so a win-win-win. (But no dramatic tension in that - you guys always bring it.) Oh and for breakfast at McDonald's get the Sausage biscuit with egg. Or a breakfast taco many places starting in TX and anywhere west. Because of you two, I looked into a camper van in the US, but tent camping is so much cheaper! $18 for a spot right next to the Grand Canyon North Rim (30 yds away)! (reservation 6 months in advance, but you can cancel up to 72 hours. So you can get many reservations and then cancel to fit your schedule. People gobble up the cancellations too.)

I do also agree about the truck stops being really good in the UK. We stopped at one in Scotland on the way to see the Coos near Stirling and the variety of foods that you have there was really surprising. One thing that you didn't mention was the cost of grocery items compared to the US. It is WAY cheaper in the UK and more healthy items as well. Most of the truck stops here in the US do not offer what you guys in the UK have with yours. We were really amazed!

You've obviously never been to a Buc-ees. Some are bigger than a Super Walmart and the food options are endless and very good. You could literally eat a 6 course meal inside of a Buc-ees.

@@rehjhoeffner2255 yep. I have been to Buc-ees a bunch of times in Texas. In fact, they are building a new one right down the road from us here in Arkansas. They are great! But, to be fair, Buc-ees is really an anomaly here in the US. I have traveled all over this country and been in every kind of Truckstop you can imagine. That place we went to in Scotland was unlike any place here that *I* personally have been to including Buc-ees. They had a variety of fresh and packaged food items and this isn't the case at most places here in the US. It's more like just snack food. This place had all sorts of cheeses, fruit, different cured meats etc. It really was like stopping at a farmer's market except this was a service station off the main motorway.

Price- as a Brit living in the US…..Like you said BLM is free. Many Forestry service sites and Core of Engineers sites are as low as $5. And if you are over 65 they are nearly all half price. I have never paid over $15 so I don’t know how the UK won that one!!

A little trick I learned on the restrooms in the us is that you take a long enough peace of toilet paper & tuck it in between the opening of the door & the stall top to bottom & cover that up mate.that will will give you some privacy.I do that at work in the restrooms

Canada has many Provincial and private parks across the country and I would say average $35/40 Canadian dollars per night. They have hook-ups, water, showers and/or out-houses. Some are rustic in the wilderness and others are not as isolated. Provincial parks have a policy of keeping a few sites open for overnight stays due to their isolated location. In Canada, there are large areas of the country that are isolated.

You may want to double check your crime level theory. A quick google search tells a different story (crimes per 1,000 people.) We may have prolific guns here but the crime levels are a different story. As kids here we quickly learned the same questions you have about taxes and tips. not including taxes in the sticker price is just a marketing ploy and it could have gone either way. Once you know it's going to happen there's really little to moan about. As many of us were taught, "If you have to worry about pennies more you should probably reconsider spending any money at all." As far as tipping goes I believe most of us still tip for traditional things - waiters, bellhops, cabbies, a piano player in a cocktail bar, etc. Just because there's a tip jar next to a cash register doesn't imply a necessity. When we receive exceptional service from labor services - movers, tree trimmers, etc. - we tend to tip in the amount of a few after-hour beers, maybe lunch, etc. instead of a percentage of the amount paid to the boss. Oh, by the way, just what is it you are doing / want to do in a bathroom stall that nobody else is doing?

I second visiting Hruska's "truck stop" if you are near Austin, TX. It is in Ellinger, TX. Get the Poppy seed Kolache! In TX after English the most commonly spoken language is Spanish followed by Czech! The Germans all speak English now. Kolaches are big in TX with chain fanchises too.

Human history, in the land currently known as the USA, stretches all the way back to an Oregonian settlement dating to 15000BCE and includes Viking settlements in New York and maybe even Oklahoma. In Le Flore County, you'll find Heavener Runestone State Park, where archaeologists study an early 11th century rune stone to this day; there are other sites in Oklahoma with rune stones, too. We have history--American history; it's just different than Europe's.

That was cute! 😂 Yay for America! When you return to the US you should plan on visiting the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee & North Carolina. So much to see and do. From Oconaluftee in Cherokee, NC to Cades Cove and Roaring Fork Nature Motor Trail with the 1,000 drops waterfall in TN. Too many places to go and all for free. Lots to do that costs money too. But I'm sure you would love it. I've lived here 20 years now and have not seen or visited all there is to do. Also the Smokies has reasonable camping for RV's, tents and van/car camping. Very reasonable prices.

when you guys come back to the US, try doing some camping in northern Minnesota. Minnesota is considered the state of 10,000 lakes and I don’t truly know if they’re that many but there’s a lot. Look into getting a three day fishing license for being a visitor and catch some really fun. Freshwater fish. Just a note if you decide to fish we do have some fish that have teeth. Be careful lol.

If you were to try boondocking on the east coast of the U.S., you would find it very difficult! In Massachusetts specifically, it is illegal to sleep in your car, and there is no free overnight parking. The majority of our campgrounds are only open seasonally from May-October. The western half of the country is MUCH more open to recreational use of our lands, but they do have more open space than we do out east. We are much more densely populated.
