The Lockheed LC-130 is a ski-equipped United States Air Force variant of the C-130 Hercules used in the Arctic and Antarctic. Ten are currently in service with the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard.
Here's an inside (and outside) look at the LC-130, with the team of the 109th Airlift Wing.

I just want the world to know that the 17th Tactical Airlift Squadron based out of Elmendorf AFB, Alaska did this Arctic mission for many years before the 109th took it over in about 1975. I was a pilot with that unit, '71-'75 and have 42 ski landings in my logbook. Our birds were A model 130's converted to ski birds and were called "D" models. We staged out of Sondrestrom Air Base (now called Kangerlusuaaq). Cheers! Jim Banas, Captain, USAF (Ret)

I understand that JATO bottles are all used up and the new C130J is so powerful JATO is not needed. Can anyone confirm if JATO is history or is it still in use. The Blue Angeles Fat Albert C130 stopped doing JATO demonstrations because the Viet Nam era JATO stock was used up or so I'm told. I also was told even the new C130J has all the wiring for JATO still installed so they can easily be retrofit for JATO. Any experts out there?

We still use JATO (we call it ATO now) but only on the LC130. We have 8 bladed props now so we dont use it nearly as much any more, but it does happen. Theres is a supply of them that still remains but no new bottles are being made
