Congrats again my man! I think it was a great meet considering you hit your total and only missed one lift! Awesome medal too. Wouldn't mind hearing about the handling experience but also would be curious to hear about how you executed your meet day nutrition/ meals, considering you were on the road.
Of course it's always hard to tell from video but your squat depth looked a lot more "no question." Did you do anything different to make sure you hit depth?
I made sure in training I was doing movements that helped dial it in, especially low box squats. I also changed the way I cue with a focus more on sitting back and down.
You really are super strong. A 680 total as your definition of a "good meet"? Badass. I think I'll be able to supercede that number at some point and reach the 700 kg threshold, but it requires me to not only hit my coveted 300 kg deadlift, but also a 4 plate bench (184 kg) and a 216 kg squat (should be fairly easy if I can DL 300, tbf). Alternately like a 236 kg squat and a 164 kg bench. Current PRs in kg are 140/107/186. 😳But I'm only in my early twenties, and not yet 4 years into this.
That'd place me, by Dots, if I weigh in at 107 kg, which is realistic, at around #7480th ever in terms of men in the -110 kg class. That'd be pretty fantastic. I'd love to have my name on OpenPowerlifting. To have those numbers there and beat a lot of steroid users without drugs, as someone who was once extremely unathletic - first morbidly obese, then super skinny and weak.
Great meet brother!! Would you ever consider maybe training at a PL gym every once in awhile during prep? (maybe when you have heavy singles) It might help with staying focus during lifts since I know in the basement you have so many controlled variables at your disposal
I would really like to, but it's just difficult for me on a few fronts. Ideally I train during the week during my lunch breaks so it's easy to get in training without having to travel to a good gym that's close by and not waste extra time. I could try to pivot my training to an evening or weekend, but that encroaches on family time and other commitments which are more important to me.
So I've competed IPA, RPS, USAPL, and USPA. USAPL to me offers the highest quality meets and does a better job vetting the people who run the federations. USPA still has some great meet directors and competitors, but the actions of the EC and founder make me not want to support them any longer. If I wanted specialty bars would likely look for a WRPF meet.
@@BasementBrandon Yes. The ER Racks had metal rollers, which were good and durable, but some of the other brands have plastic rollers which can cause unevenness. Not good to experience that for the first time in competition. But ER Racks had their own problems. The old ER benches were slippery and very firm. That would throw me off when I was used to a bench with a little more padding and grip.
I would appreciate a look at your final 2 weeks' programming that you followed. We talked on IG how my plans have been utter deloads -- last lift Monday/Tuesday at 60% openers. You did a workout on Thursday. Would love to hear your thoughts on final meet prep.
The quick of it is 2 weeks out was my heaviest squat single, deadlifts were reduced quite a bit (block pulls), bench stayed pretty consistent as it's low fatiguing for me. Last week of training was mostly technique work (50%) but trained all the way up to Friday.
@@BasementBrandon Thanks for the info. I was curious to see how Juggernaut AI handled meet peaking. I ended up not doing anything except Bench (because a day that ends in -Y is bench day) the week of. Since I did nearly openers in Squat finally switching to a combo rack from Power Rack 8 days prior to the meet.
Great job! Meets always make me pumped to get back in the gym too. Check out the updated rules that dropped this week. There's going to be more changes in January 2024 too.
It's great to hear you hit your goals. I bet as you put weight on that, you will continue onto new PRs. I wonder how you would benefit from training with a partner or group. It would be interesting to compare solo home lifters to club lifters. Congratulations, those openers on dead lift and squat looked great.
Congrats, Brandon! I love to see that you set your own goals for the meet. And I thought you looked really strong -- especially on the squat and deadlift.
Man, great work B! That last deadlift might have looked slow but it also looked pretty smooth. Beast conventional dl. Way to crush your kg total goal! I would like to hear how the handling went etc. personally too. Curious to see what you end up doing training wise now
Nice Brandon!! 3rd with a bit left in the tank and you were on the light end of your weight class! You got room to run! Glad you talked a little about getting in your head during the meet, seems like the meet can be as much a mental game as a strength game. Deadlifts cause me real fear in the meet, especially 2nd and 3rd attempt, can't shake it and always end up way under performing and pulling my attempts back because I'm freaking out when its time to pull.
I can give you some feedback here if you'd like, not sure it's worth a video as they're just blocks that can add in to their cups (which I've done a video on)
@@jimbin-yp8kw So they're quite nice and beefy. The Irwin onces are great b/c they can fit both a 32mm or a 35mm bar where others can just do one. The downside to them is that they're expensive and not easily swappable (which is why I have a dedicated pair just for use). You could prob find a cheaper 3d printed alternative if you wanted.
Thanks @@BasementBrandon Does the 32mm fit loose in it? I'm not good with technology so I was thinking about either this one or the ghost strong one, but if I remember correctly you mentioned the ghost ones don't fit very tight on racks. Any idea around how long it would take to swap them out with the rollers?
