In this video, I'm trying to fix a USB memory stick that is no longer recognised by my laptop. It looks like it's been bent or something.
Will I be able to fix it?
Hope you enjoy!

The magic things I use to break stuff;
My soldering iron: amzn.to/2Isf360
My leaded solder: amzn.to/3giGtI1
My flux: amzn.to/3lTrPIh
My soldering wick: amzn.to/3groIGn
My microscope: amzn.to/2VP3msU

PS. You will no doubt notice that I'm a complete novice when it comes to repairing things like this. What I do in this video may irritate you, but that isn't intentional... honest. It's just how I go about fixing things with my limited knowledge. I might get better at some point.

Nicely done. I keep defective USB cables around for this purpose. I cut off the defective bit of cable, leaving me with a good plug connected to a length of lead. Then when a project like this comes along, instead of trying to salvage a problematic plug, I’ll solder my repurposed usb cable to the relevant points on the board. Possibly easier than Borge wires on the board. (At least if a “helping hands” device is used.) I’m gonna need to get one of those microscopes.
@StezStixFix
@StezStixFix 3 года назад
Thanks Cory. That is a genius idea! Definitely would have been easier, I think I'll try that on the next one. I also need to get a helping hands thingy. Having the board sliding around doesn't help 🙃. And I would definitely recommend the microscope. I don't have much to compare it to, but the quality is far superior to anything else I've used! 👍

@@StezStixFix I'm interested in getting into these types of repairs but was nervous about it until watching had a go at it and was successful. You've inspired me to push and get into it. Would it be possible for you to do a tour/what's on my desk video for us please?

Thanks Les! This one is still actually working. Once I got it back inside its original casing, it's pretty sturdy. But yeah, I would like to think I'd do a better job on this if I had to do it again. It was my first time with solder mask and I just whopped it on there! 🤣

You should put solder mask at the very end, if you need to repair back some wire you are stuck. Hot gluing after everything is done may be a good choice. Thanks for the video.

just out of curiosity: why didn't you just take a type-A USB cable, snip one end off, strip back the insulation and then just solder the 4 wires inside onto the appropriate points on the board? P.S. love the channel

Often times the data is more valuable than the stick itself. He just wanted to recover the files, he may have got rid of the stick afterwards (or keep it as a souvenir maybe).

My wife had a USB drive that had a lot of her teaching lessons on it. She said it wasn't working. It was in the bottom of her handbag. I started looking at it and the thing had dirt solidly jammed in the plug. I cleaned it with a toothpick and canned air, the used IPA to clean the contacts. Got the docs of and transferred them to a new drive.

1.- Straighten the legs of the connector by bending them downwards so that they do not remain in the air. You don't even need to desolder the connector. 2.- Do not use flux. 3.- Lengthen the track with tin. Do not use wires.

I would suggest you get yourself some thin enamelled wire. That wire you was using looked to stiff. 0.1mm is the lowest diameter readily available for a low cost.
@StezStixFix
@StezStixFix 3 года назад
I do actually have some 0.1 enamelled wire. I haven't used it yet as I'm unsure of the best way to remove the coating where it terminates either end (if you even have to). I plan to have a play around on a test board with it. 👍
@pds8475
@pds8475 3 года назад
@@StezStixFix Usually on such a thin wire the soldering iron will burn the coating off. Depending on the thickness of the coating of your wire you may have to scrape it with a blade.
