Yes, memories of a perfect day. I was a USC student, there with my uncle who had graduated from SC. The first half was painful, with little hope remaining during half-time. Yet I truly can remember the opening of the third-quarter, and the odd, almost electric buzz in the stands. "Uncle, can you feel it? Something's going to happen." A stranger next to us nodded his head, "Something's about to happen." And then the kickoff and Davis's run. The rest of the day will remain as a benchmark of pure bliss. Now grand to see it here again. Thank you Peter G.
I was also at that game. I remember Notre Dame fans made an impromptu banner late in 2nd quarter that read "repeat 1966' [when they won 51-0], and it looked, at the time, as though they might do that... then Anthony Davis, Pat Haden, JK McKay, Sheldon Digs and the rest took over ....
XAVIER G. BAILEY This was my first football game ever to watch as a 10 year old. I believe it was Thanksgiving Day can’t remember exactly . Still a Usc fan till this day.
I was at a COS Junior College game in central California (we were visiting family there) when they announced the halftime score. That whole stadium went crazy. When they announced the final score that stadium was silent and my family went nuts. We were the only ones cheering.
Well everyone , I’m 59 years old and watched this when I was a youngster with my older brother who graduated from ND in 1973. He said to me at halftime this isn’t over as long as Anthony Davis is on the field. Pheew was he right .!!
Here is my story regarding this game. My Dad was a huge ND fan. We would always watch college football on saturday afternoons. This saturday night my mother and father went to dinner. I was 11 at the time. He told me if ND won, I owed him a dollar and if SC won he owed me $5. When I woke up the next morning there was a $5 bill under my pillow. I love my Dad !!! Not for the $5 but for the man he is !!!!!!!
If I was Notre Dame's head coach that game, I would just punish the living shit out of those players for going up 24-0, and give up 55 points! I would actually have them sing the USC fight song to the USC players, then to the USC band. They'll have them wear wrist bands that say USC-55 ND-24 for the entire bowl practice just so they don't ever get lazy like that ever again.
I'm a Notre Dame fan and even I have to admit this was a great comeback from USC. What a game! How often can you say a team went from getting blown out to blowing them out?
Bizarre second half. Everything SC tried worked, and then some. Nothing Notre Dame tried worked; fumbled pitchouts, interceptions. Just unbelievable. This game is and will remain unique.
Back then boosters and fans could celebrate in the end zone areas and run along players on the sidelines without getting penalized. LOL. Fight On, baby!
This was one of the first football games I watched. I thought, boy, football is exciting. Then I watched Michigan lose over and over in the Rose. I came to associate Schembechler with all things stupid.
Thanks for posting, Peter, Fight On!! Great vid and captions. I just have one *constructive* criticism: instead of simply playing “Tribute to Troy” over and over for the soundtrack, you should’ve included “Fight On” and “Conquest.” Just a thought. ✌️✌️
