I've been PvPing since Alpha and decided to make a guide on how to use kegs properly in Sea of Thieves! Watch LIVE: / blurbs Discord: / discord Twitter: / blurbstv Instagram: / blurbsttv
I once offloaded 4 kegs onto an enemy ship that caught me inside Thieves Haven when I first started playing the game. Looking back on it, I should not have gotten away with it. It was very satisfying to back-spawn in time to see the burning bowsprit of the invader sinking below the waves.
I never forget this one encounter where I had just cleared Fort of Fortune and was loading my ship when some reapers came snooping. They did manage to sink my ship, but I got my revenge as I took a nuke and managed to blow it on their sloop. When I was back at the fort, loading up both the fort's treasure AND the reaper's haul (there were a lot), a server merge happened. I was laughing about the fact that the reapers had quit.
When I first picked up this game I joined my casual friends who were talking about a deadly weapon they called "the Boomstick", a weapon that they said caused their entire boat to sink when they accidentally shot the side of their boat when trying to shoot monsters on a nearby island. I later found out that what had actually happened was that they were using the Trident of Dark Tides and had to swear to them that it couldn't blow up a boat or even cause damage to friendly players at all, and they made me prove it to them at the end of the session by shooting our boat with the Trident after we'd sold all our loot. And the boat exploded. Turns out they CONSISTENTLY hid powder kegs around their boat EVERY time they played, and were so oblivious to how foolish that 'strategy' is (generally at least) that they'd blown themselves up time and time again by accidentally igniting their own kegs and hadn't connected the dots... I laughed quite a lot.
If you do keep mega kegs on your ship, after you make the jump from one to two, keep as many as you like, your gonna sink anyways. Always fun to go for the triple mega keg with friends
I feel like having a keg on board IS good, as long as you don't let your opponents get close enough. I play with a friend who hates PVP so most of the time we just run from reapers and such while I like to hop off every once in a while at cannon posts while she makes her getaway, and in THOSE situations we play smart and NEVER get fired upon. So when I find a keg now I like to keep it at the back of my sloop and, as soon as we get a tail, I can ask my friend to let the sails up just a LITTLE so that the enemy ship is just outside of harpoon range, and then I pick the keg up, drop it off of the back of the sloop, and watch the fireworks as they unwillingly sail right over it. You CAN light the fuse first but imo that just draws attention to your strategy - I prefer to either drop it off and attempt to shoot it with a gun OR lure them directly into it by dropping it in a choke point (such as those archways) or by steering so that the barrel is directly between the two boats. Plus there's always the option of hopping out and just swimming underwater, but then you get the mermaid. If a boat ever gets an opportunity to fire cannonballs/players at my boat though, I yeet that keg off of the back IMMEDIATELY.
@@ProfPlump-ug3xe no, it isn’t. If you want to avoid pvp, the big brain move would be to not play a game that has pvp in it at all. We’re supposed to fight over loot in sea of thieves. If that’s not what you want you’re playing the wrong title 👍🏻
@@theoneandpwnlysilva Just because the game is PVP and PVE doesn't mean you can tell people they aren't allowed to play if they want to play non-combative, just like you can't force players to avoid PVP either. It's a sandbox game. I AM a PVP player and a PVP seeker but, as I said, sometimes I play with a friend (usually when we're stoned to be honest) and since that friend doesn't like PVP (as I mentioned) and also since when I play with them I'm usually not sober enough to think fast enough for PVP, so yes we avoid getting in broadsides in those sessions. There aren't a lot of chilled out ship-sailing games out there that are non-PVP either, so it's not like my friend has any good options (maybe Assassin's Creed Black Flag? but they've completed that already). Be more toxic?
Tip: want to keg an enemy with lower risk of your pirate dying? Swim underneath their ship, light the fuse and make in float into the bottom of their boat. Good for making those lower deck holes on galleons
@@theoneandpwnlysilva no it doesn't do less... it does 4 holes per keg, no matter if exploded on the inside or outside also protip @marco Oplo - kegs don't need to be ignited if you let the float from beneath an enemy ship they explode on impact
Happy to say I already knew most of these. I've gotten some insane defusals. Another tip, if you've got at least one other crewmate on your ship and an enemy kegger on your ladder, you can always stab or shoot the keg when they get to the top of the ladder, as long as your teammate is a safe distance away. Your crewmate can then repair and maybe even revive you if you're lucky. Of course, ideally you would be able to defuse and chuck the keg off, but you never know if they're just going to hold it while it explodes. This takes some of the uncertainty out of it
I’ve killed at least three ships since I started playing with the ancient powder kegs. Two of which by jumping in the water and detonating it underwater. They’ve 100% been werf against the new players we go against as new players.
i usually solo sloop, and when i find a keg, i put the keg in the bed area of the sloop, cuz at that bed area is kind of an invisible barrier that cant get hit with cannonballs, or fire and its quite hidden cuz most people assume that the keg will be under deck near the bow of the ship or in the crows nest, they can overlook that spot quite easily, and i wanted to try it but didnt want to risk it, is to see how much damage will my ship take if the keg explodes there, i think that spot is maybe a good place to keep a keg
I like to line the deck with them before logging off and driving head first into someone... To cause confusion to my enemy when they shoot a random cannonball at me and the ship flies to the moon
My crew always ends the night by lining our deck with them, anchoring off the island, and playing the ship off to Becalmed (detonating them in time with the music).
For more advanced keg strats I suggest Sneakler's YT. Channel's been dead for two years but still great tips. Also, true chads put their kegs right at the wheel for easy access.
1:47 Right, so they can easily blow it up with a gun or throwable while it's literally on your ship, and even get the bonus of killing you. 10/10 advice. Also love how your advice for keg defense applies only against new players who blow themselves up or jump off anyways. 10/10/10 guide
9 times out of 10 Blurb isn't actually giving good advice, he's convincing people to play how he wants them to. The only good bit of advice he gave in this video was to not keep kegs on your ship. Even then, that isn't always the case. Example: if on a sloop, you can protect a keg by placing it by the wall opposite the brig, and keeping your opponents on your left since the brig can't be shot through, and you can run to grab it quickly with some practice. The main mistake most players make when hauling a keg is not the act of hauling the keg, but rather how they store it. Smart players know that the key isn't "never keep kegs onboard", but actually is "don't do it often, and keep it out of the crow's nest". The reason he is dismissive of the players who have succeeded with kegs is because he wants to make it easier for himself, and what better way to do it than convince everyone he can that a stategy that he has mastered (and likely knows the best counterstrats for) is the best way to play? Rather than explain that the exceptions to the rule are generally more experienced, and emphasising the high level of skill and knowledge required, he acts as though there is no reason to deviate from the rule. Because if a player who knows what they're doing has a keg on board, you're more screwed than normal and he knows it. Blurb is subtly teaching players to fit into his view of how you should pvp, because he is good at his chosen methods, and less good against other methods. If a harpooner took my keg like that, they'd be making my job easier. If he really is that stupid, he'll lose every time he harpoons a smart player's keg unless he has a crew shooting them. Why harpoon it when you can shoot it in their hand? It's an Instakill and you are most likely far enough away that it won't kill you and 9 times outta 10 the worst thing will be a hole or 2 in your ship. He literally showed a dude setting a keg off on the front of his ship and it only made a few holes. He keeps saying "a kegger will either blow themself up or drop it and jump off" and tells you to just stay on the other end of the ship or defuse it depending on the scenario. Even though he just talked about how mostly newer players do this, he has no excuse for not knowing and explaining that if a player is doing a kamikaze, the most likely scenario is that they will be trying to kill you, and will be on your ass. You might not be able to get a distance between you if they are going for the kill. He isn't the guy to go to for advice on SOT.
@@dirtydish6642 This isn't some conspiracy theory, it's just something that anyone who stops to think critically about his advice would notice. Why would he give bad advice, such as harpooning a keg, putting yourself right next to the big boom if the kegger reacts smartly? Because, he isn't aiming to give people good advice. There is simply no logic in harpooning an enemy's keg, especially considering that shooting it would be easier 99% of the time. He ignores the exceptions to the rules he lay's out in his advice or dismisses them. When it comes to not hauling kegs for ship boarding it's bad advice because a kegger who isn't running solo doesn't need to worry about their ship being defenseless if they die with him and he respawns faster, and a lot of experienced keggers don't do it alone, and make sure to kamikaze solo players because it gives them the advantage. In the instance that a kegger boards your ship, you are kinda fucked really, if you approach it to disarm it, they can easily shoot or bomb it, if you kill them, the keg will likely go off before you can disarm it. The smart thing to do is try to change course to get distance between the two ships, this might give you time to bucket water and repair the damage if you get really lucky. Otherwise there is a pretty good chance that your ship will have been battered by another player on a cannon by the time you can fight back. His advice is bad, yet he's clearly good at pvp. Either it's intentional, or he's just stupid. He also tells other players not to go to red sea, and that you can learn something from instant spawn deaths. The vast majority of the time, this is bullshit. If you are being spawncamped, the vast majority of the time you don't have any options. He is just lying cos he likes to spawncamp. If he wanted to help players, more than half the advice he gives would be different. He just wants to keep dominating the game.
@@kinorris1709 While you may have some subjectively arguable points to be made, they are quickly lost in the lengthy posts loaded with all the feels of salt, envy and borderline obsession.
Tip from a keg enthusiast: the best way to deliver kegs to other ships is to grab a rowboat and row them over while your friends distract the crew with your ship. It doesn’t always work, but it works far more often than the crows nest tactic.
Had a crew try keg me once while I was afk, still had my headset on so I heard them board, managed to shoot and kill the keg carrier without blowing the keg, took the keg, swam it under their ship and blew it to kingdom come, should’ve stuck a ‘return to sender’ on it😂
Did they fix the keg blowing up when touching your ship while on the harpoon? It all depends on your boat size. I leave kegs on the tip of a galleon so it can leave only holes and know the front mast down only if someone tries to mess with you. A brig as well. Sloop? Just leave the keg in on the tip. Not a mega keg, but a regular one. It's easier and most pirates like this guy will think there is a bunch of holes when there isn't.
My friend and I keep a keg in our crows nest. If you are super cautious and you are always aware that it is there protecting it, then you can keep it in the crows nest. Been playing for a while and our kegs have not once been used against us. Be smart and you will be totally fine.
Did rare change something with the changes of keg spawns in ocean loot? It seems like almost half the time I shoot myself out of a cannon Infront of an enemy ship I land ontop of a keg.
Here’s an extra tip for kegs don’t commit sudoku on their ship with the keg because if you do you’ll do some damage alright but if you were alive you would’ve been able to do more damage such as dropping their anchor or fighting them on board that way it will sink them faster than they could ever recover, not only that but if you do die it with the explosion it will still give them time to recover
I keep 1-2 kegs in crows nest but my rule is use it on the 1st ship possible, dont keep it there during engagements. Been playing 6 months and only once did i sink because a failed board attempt with a thrown firebomb ignited my mast, dropped mast, guy boarded, killed me and the rest is history. Props to that guy though, great play!! What i like to do is get them following me and drop qith a keg and board them. Blurbs is right though, good players dont fall for it. But i solo sloop a lot and am not as good as Blurbs so my strategy is get them following me for a few minutes and eventually drop with a keg and board. My success ratio feels like 33% so one in three. But when i play Xbox servers only, i am legendary keg blaster hehe.
This might be a dumb question, but I've always wondered how players like you resupply food, cannons, etc so quicky? Do you perchance have strategy for resupply so you can get back in the fights quicker if you lose a ship?
I must fight nothing but new players cause I've *never* had a keg that was up my mast get targeted by another ship. I've, in fact, had my ship sink with two kegs up my mast, grabbed one out of the resulting loot pile in the water, and swim it to one of the ships that sunk me to keg and sink them. Actually, yeah, definitely new players now that I read what I just wrote. Gotten away with in excess of 8 kegs up the mast. Man, there mustn't be many Aussie players.
for me if i am in a crew i hot mic that i am going up witchever side i am going up i light the keg so that when i get to the top it explodes and usualy they are all ladder guarding and all die and then my crew mate can clean them up
I've done the panic shooting. Got boarded and just said f it. Shot the guy, blew us both up, and then respawned just in time to repair. Gonna use your tips though, next time. Good stuff
Is there a way to learn how to properly aim canons faster than regular pvp? i feel like i get other players in bad positions but never get anything out of it because i miss all my shots
I had a guy chasing me and I stored a mega keg on my ship so I panicked and threw the keg off of the back of my ship so when the other ship right behind me got close enough I shot the keg with my parrot eye of reach. It was funny and probably only a one time thing I can do
Last time I played, a friend put two kegs in a row Boat and snuck up on a Galleon and blew it up. They were hiding on the other side of an Island waiting to ambush our Brig. We got so much loot from that.
Depends on if your solo or have a partner. If you have a partner, anchor ship, have one person jump off, other person deals with the keg and gets it blown up and must kill whoever boarded with the blast. They might die in the process, but your teammate can climb back on to res and save the ship. If you're solo, and they're equal or slightly worse at hand to hand fighting, then your only chance is to drop anchor and try to kill them with it while they're holding it and survive. Jump in the water if you have to, just don't die. You can get back on and save the ship. The most important thing is to drop anchor, especially on sloop. If you don't die, you're pretty much guaranteed to get blown off.
I always put kegs on my bottom deck, i once blew up a brigantine filled with good players and got a ton of loot. I rammed them then jumped on and blew up the keg
My greatest experience with a keg was when my crew and i were going to go take out a sloop and my opening shot went straight down the stairs to the keg near the table and hit it luckiest crap ever
If you harpoon a keg out of a swimmer's hands, won't they either snipe it or hit it with a throwable to set it off? Then they would probably get an easy board after killing you and taking down at least one mast, not to mention the damage to your ship keeping everyone else distracted. It would probably make more sense to just snipe it in the water before they get to your ship.
ok but like when you have nothing on you/nothing to lose it's really fun to stock up on kegs, gain the trust of an enemy crew(especially a galleon), drop like 4 kegs in front of their boat, have one accidentally get set off, pretend like you have no idea what happened, help the crew get all their shit onto a row boat, then kill the guy who's rowing, say "Yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me" then proceed to take it on your ship, go to the reapers hide out in a high stakes adrenaline rush of a chase, take the rowboat narrowly avoid their sight rowing to the island, let your boat sail away so by the time they realize you're not on it you've sold everything then stand on the dock watching them sail towards you and shoot you, but you know, doesn't matter now ;)
I don't know, when I'm carrying a keg, I'm able to sink other ships way faster than when I don't. People just don't expect you to gunpowder barrel them out of nowhere.
@@vonbeaver99 if someone boards with a keg it's not a bad thing, but if you got one in ya crows while trying to escape or defend you will loose that encounter most times which is bad
Exactly, its a high risk high reward situation. I never use them when i get shot at but only if i wanna sneak them on board of an enemy ship that hasnt seen me yet
