A fellow 131 mouse-grip enjoyer, I see! When it comes to sliding, I also agree that Ctrl is just too uncomfortable to use as a bind. This is why I'll always vouch for trying a keyboard with the ISO layout rather than ANSI, as there's a backslash key snuggled to the right of the ISO layout's shorter 1.25 unit Left Shift; it's perfect for crouch/slide binds!
i got into pc gaming with minecraft and always had "crouch" or "go low" with SHIFT because sneaking was default to SHIFT. So many games use crouch on ctrl however, and by habit I pop open settings and swap these two normally because SHIFT is usually some sort of movement thing like dash and i build it like that. I love all weapons on the number keys though, once you get past 5 though things get tricky but i become pretty good at hitting them with practice and looking a few times first
Def agree on slide being swapped off of ctrl I used to use default until the p-2 update when I was sliding a lot more dodging sisyphus's attacks and after a while my hand would really start to hurt bad. So I swapped slide to shift and made my dash forward mouse and its so much nicer on my hand now
Great video man! I'm using a lightweight Mouse4/5 Wireless Mouse and full size (104 keys) keyboard and, after watching your vid, I decided to change my bindings. I started with something similar to yours, but I couldn't stay away from Ctrl and Shift as Slide and Dodge respectively. I ended up doing this: Move - W/A/S/D Dodge - Shift Slide - Ctrl Jump - Space Primary Fire - Left Click Secondary Fire - Right Click Next Variation - (any key I wouldn't ever use) Previous Variation - (" ") Revolver - Q Shotgun - E Nailgun - F Railcannon - C Rocket Launcher - Z Spawner Arm - Y Next Weapon - unbound Previous Weapon - (" ") Last Used Weapon - (" ") Variation Slots 1-3 - (" ") Punch - (any key I wouldn't ever use) Change Fist - (" ") Feedbacker - Mouse Forward (Mouse5) Knuckleblaster - Mouse Backward (Mouse4) Hook - Middle Click Stats - Tab Your analysis and conclusions also led me to change my bindings in tf2 to go from Mouse Scrolling my weapons, to Mouse 4 and 5 Thanks Herb! Can't wait to see other videos you make!
hey there, i had just picked the game up a couple weeks prior to this vid being posted and had just finished it on normal difficulty. having already melted my hands off on another technical video game in years prior i hopped on your control scheme with some small adjustments of my own and turned it up to violent difficulty to replay it all and i wanted to say thank u so much. i can go for like 4x longer without experiencing any pains and youve probably saved me a lot of trouble and time. it means the world, thank you so much for posting :D
you should see some Fortnite players' binds. I saw one guy that binded his left and right from A and D to Q and A. The reasoning was that you'll never be pressing them at the same time, and using A and D takes up two fingers.
Quake vibes but more reasonable here. I used similar thing in old airsims like il-2 but for head movement inside cockpit and still using it in modern succesor of il-2. Z-X is left-right and C-V is up-down.
I have been playing for a while, and before the rocket launcher, I had no problem using the scroll wheel (bc it was easy to do a railcoin, but when it released, I realised I needed to make them something that was comfortable for me: V - Revolvers B - Railcannon N - Nailgun/sawblade Q - Rocket launcher E - Punch R - Whiplash F - Shotgun Mouse 4 - Change arm Mouse 5 - Change variation ( yes I use a separate keybind for it bc it facilitates shotgun swap/boosting) Remember to make whatever YOU are comfortable with, If you copy another person's keybinds (which is perfectly fine btw) you could end up using a setting that isnt comfortable for you hand and way of moving it, try stuff, find the right key, no matter how weird it might be, hell, bind punch to H if you like it I'm not a cop and no one here is
Since I usually run relatively vanilla keyboard binds, my custom blinds are more mouse focused. I use m4 for dash, m5 for knuckleblaster, m6 for whiplash, and since I generally parry with F, I've preemptively set m7 to whatever the yellow fist will be.
@@seventhspud the Logitech G502 Hero. Its a pretty common gaming mouse, and I dig mine. Logitech makes some banger hardware, but I could rant for literal hours about their software side, so be warned if you ever plan on picking one up.
@@seventhspud I've been using the logitech g600 for over 10 years now, 12 whole side buttons, a 3rd primary button for ring finger to use if you don't normally rest with middle finger on scroll wheel. a lot of games I don't use all the buttons, mostly only in MMOs, but even having 5 weapon swaps put to your thumb on the mouse is a massive upgrade, then putting slide on the new ring finger button
I'd say our key bind is quite similar in that it allows you to comfortably reach the keys without moving your fingers too much. Here's mine: Q for revolver R for nailgun LeftAlt for shotgun C for railcannon V for rocket launcer MiddleMouse to swap arms E used to be reserved for variant swap, but now it's the Whiplash key. I switch variant by tapping the weapon key. My gameplay became way more fluid when I switched to this!
The way I found out that it's better to not use the scroll wheel was when I broke it, because I use the middle mouse button to swap arms, and all tho I can't scroll anymore, I can still use the middle mouse button so it's fine. The other keybinds I use: Whiplash is left Alt Rocket launcher is R Railcannon is C Everything else is default, and I'm pretty satisfied with this setup.
I have my scroll wheel set to scroll through variants, rather than weapons. Usually to swap variants I just press the assigned key again but to quickly swap to either the revolver or railcanon's 3rd variant I use the scroll wheel, since its less inputs and more ultrakilling.
Surprisingly, I have customised my binds for DOOM Eternal more than I have for ULTRAKILL. Probably because 5 weapons are easier to handle than 7 (chaingun does not exist). For D:E, I use scoll up for flamethrower and scroll down for chainsaw. You use them quite often, but don't need to be as accurate with them as with a gun. Which is handy, because my index finger and ring finger naturally rest on lmb and rmb respectively. Going for scroll wheel means losing accuracy, so binding a weapon there seems counterproductive.
my keybinds for ultrakill forward: W left: A backward: S right: D quick weapon swap: E whiplash: R feedbacker: F knuckleblaster: Q jump: space dash: tab slide: shift weapons: default mouse inputs and 1-5 on keyboard not much customization, but enough that i enjoy it. for the most part. im totally not upset that whenever i dash the stats menu pops up and i cant rebind that to some other key. haha. totally!!! on another note, ive considered trying to use the mouse wheel more to change between weapons (especially variations) more smoothly, but i havent really gotten around to incorporating it. itd be fun to use in combination to pressing the keys i think. if the new arm comes out and has its own unique bind, im probably going to set it as either C, V, B, or X, as thats right above the spacebar and very close to where i put my thumb on it
for sliding set it back to control and use the side of your hand to push down on control instead of your pinky, it makes it way easier! also i dont customize that bind sofdont have to but i reccomend it
I honestly find all the base controls in ultrakill to be perfect for me (yes, I don’t rebind rocket launcher and unironically press 5, don’t bully me) I also use g for switching arms and it’s honestly really nice lmao (I tried to get new keybinds for seperate punching but it didn’t feel right)
And if you use the middle finger to press the middle mouse, you get to perform the Junko Fumo middle finger ᗜˬᗜ strat against every enemy you parry or projectile boost!
I actually ended up finding keybinds really helpful for the buttons on the side of my mouse, I personally use them with the top button (m5) switching between my fists and the bottom one I rest the middle of my left finger on (m4) switching thru variations. I have a couple variations of weapons I dont touch so I just set them up accordingly because I know which ones I'm gonna use and have set up for situations, I might need to rebind my keys due to layer 7's difficulty though, P-ranks on those levels are difficult XD
i personally rest my hand with the index on lmb and middle on rmb, so my whiplash is actually bound to Q. i personally have revolver for 1, shotgun for 2, nailgun for 3, swap for E, whiplassh for Q, rocket launcher in F, feedbacker to mouse forward, knuckleblaster to mouse back, dash and slide on default, since my hand does rest there, and i have the railcannon _in fucking ALT_
I actually have shift to slide and one of my mouse extra buttons to dash. I tried to slide with left control I was immediately hit is pinky pain. Another thing is having all of my fist buttons on the extra mouse buttons which sounds unconventional but it makes stuff very fluid and easy to swap between.
Instead of fully moving your pinkie finger up or down, you can use the knuckle to hit ctrl. I’ve been doing it ever since titanfall 2 came out and its been great
My movement keys are different though, for the sake of comfort in where my arm & wrist rest Dash: Q Slide: A Jump: Spacebar Feedbacker & Primary Punch: MB5 Knucleblaster: V Whiplash: MMB Change variation: MB4 Revolver: 3 Shotgun: 4 Nailgun: W Railcannon: R Rocket Launcher: T Finally, instead of the classic WASD, I replace them with ESDF in that order
Y'know it's never really occured to me that I'm really weird for pressing control with the middle of my pinky while having my fingertip next to the keyboard instead of on it
i got pretty good with basic controls: Revolver - scroll left Railgun - scroll right shotgun - M5 nailgun - M4 Rocket Launcher - F Punch - E whiplash - R (i might change this, it's hard to whiplash while moving right) slide - Ctrl change weapon mod - not bound (just switch to the same weapon again) change arm - Q It's mostly carry over from doom eternal, with some tweaking so things are closer together
as a new player to ultrakill, this is going to take forever to get used to, but i hope that ultrakill wont be as much of a carpel tunnel simulation as it is lol
you see, I play with a controller for every game, so this video is useless for me :) That's a joke, I'm glad you showed off your keybinds because if I ever wanted to switch over to kbm I can just rewatch this video and use your binds since you're an incredible Ultrakill player!! I appreciate this video!
I use rdfg movement with pinky on shift and zasx to get every weapon. Thumb as mn for punches. It works well as i never have to compromise any change for anothers movement. The only downside is fast weapon swaps but it works well enough.
if u use a keyboard with the (Fn) button u can use the (alt) key for dashing and (jump) to space bar , its extremely easy to do a dash jump ,and i use (caps lock) for sliding so i get this smoth motion of slide > dash > jump with eas ((u wont be able to use this on all keyboards but mine somehow works))((btw its the laptop keyboard))
Personally, I've never had an issue having ctrl as slide, as I always just used the palm of my hand to press it. I do think the idea of hook being mmb is a good idea, but I use it on my m4.
i so wish they would add the option to bind scroll up and scroll down to other keys. i use scroll up for second variation and scroll down for third variation, and have the already drawn option set to same variation (so that i can shotgun swap with the jackhammer), but i have to do this through razer synapse (which is terrible) instead of just being able to do it through ultrakills options
I personally like using most of them at default except rocket launcher on the upper side mouse button and knuckleblaster (previously switch arms) on the lower one. Just makes it easier for me to immediately rocket ride and quickly while im already pressing a mouse button to attack to supplement it with some extra damage
I pretty randomly got mouse with 12 buttons on left side which is from 1 to =, all is rebindable of course. This isnt mouse buttons but keyboard ones placed there. Now i have muscle memory to operate all of them without missclicks and it got really handy. All weapons in our favourite speedpipe simulator is there and in many other games these buttons are used. Downside is that my arm is huge and it gets uncomfortable to lay it in 131, but MMB is doubleclicking and i rebinded it to weird "fire button" which on this mouse in between LMB and left side. In oposide i can easely reach Ctrl while damn half of a keyboard is under my hand. Crab controls on gamepads is also painfull, i wish someone will make gamepads with differend sizes and adopted to usage of 6 or even 8 fingers instead of 4.
I keep my stuff default, except I have nailgun and shotgun swapped and Q is my rocket launcher. It's worked pretty well and altering my stuff takes more time for me to adjust so I've kept it simple
Idk if this is just my posture or something but my hand rests a little to the side, so like rest your hand on WASD and your pinky on shift and thumb on space and then tilt about 10-15 degrees to the right. This simple little trick allows me to rest my pinky on both shift and ctrl at the same exact time making the ease of use for both keys very high. It doesn't end up hurting my hand or fingers either because it's a very natural resting position. Although I don't know if it's because of my muscle memory or if it's because of my hand position, I can't for the life of me press very many of the numbers to swap weapons...
I'm way too used to slide-on-alt-dash-on-shift, which is unfortunate, because I think slide-shift dash-alt might be optimal (since you never have to press dash and jump at the same time) and can easily slide your thumb from alt to shift...
I have the same keyboard, i dont use ctrl in ultrakill but in games where i do use it, i use my palm to press it instead of a finger. You just bend down your wrist and you press it, its pretty comfortable
imo the scroll wheel could be use as a niche 3rd variants switching since you can just scroll down once to equip it without having to press the weapon key 3 times
personally i use default wasd movement, shift for dash, ctrl for slide q for pistol, 1 for shotgun, 2 for nailgun, e for railcannon, and 3 for rocket launcher x for knuckleblaster c for whiplash and when i'm using a mouse i have: left click as primary fire, right click as secondary fire forward mouse as parry, backward mouse as swap weapon variant when i'm using a trackpad i use: b as primary fire h as secondary fire j as parry l as swap weapons
I think my biggest weakness is using 12345 for weapons, since i have to reach pretty far to use the rocket launcher. Maybe i put it on R? I never use R anyways. Thanks for the tips!
....I have played too many fps & it rotten my brain to kneel the controls to this: Jump= RMB Space= any alt function related to zoom(so charging sharpshooter isn't a pain now) Lctrl= untoggled crouch(always) Shift= movement modifier(sprint/slide) Parry= MMB Last Weapon Used= Q Hook= M4 Weaponry(quake-esqe setup) R=Rocket Launcher E=Railgun 3=Nailgun(No melee) 1=Shotgun 2=Good ol' pistol slot
idk the game is still in early access, having to rebind default keys kinda means that they are poorly made, isnt it? about a year ago i made a thread on steam discussins where i suggest, how i think controls could be much better. for example: - blue hand should be F and red hand has just that much more startup that it could be done with hold F input. - rail has one shot with significant cd witch suggests it should be an ability of sort - you are never running with your rail equipped anyway. - you can bind Z/X/C magnet/grenade launch/ coin to be easily accessible by your thumb w/o lifting your movement keys fingers. why would you even need a rail if you have easy access to piercer coin now. both are lasers - the only difference is damage. the idea is to remove weapon variants beause they pretty much only differ in its alt attacks, but it gets cluttered really fast. you still can mostly keep all the tech just replace the var swap on shotguns to the instant pump - its gonna be much more intuitive to find it on your own without watching any vids on YT or reading wiki.
I disagree that rebinding means default binds are bad. I used the default binds for a while before I decided to change them - like with my dash. The fact it's default to CTRL isn't bad, it's just my keyboard making it uncomfortable to reach. Saying that they're poorly made doesn't really make sense if plenty of people are comfortable with the defaults. I mainly made this video to show off what people have been asking me and why I think it could be a good idea for those who want to get into higher level play. Same goes for any other game: those that play at a higher level may likely have different binds than the game's defaults. I can agree to an extent that the variants can make things feel cluttered, but with the changes you suggest I don't think the game would be as fun. The railcannon, for example, is in a good spot imo. Adding a longer cd would make going for those cool tricks less interesting I think. The fact that the blue rail and piercer are functionally the same doesn't just boil down to one doing more damage than the other. The blue rail is perfect for coin setups because it's able to be instantly used, while the piercer is in a better spot to do direct damage; coin setups with it are much more difficult to pull off. Removing variants would make the game feel a lot less fun. It's a lot to keep track of but there's a dedicated button to swap variants for a reason. Simple moving the special alternate fire modes to keys would just bloat the controls instead. The name of the game is experimentation. There are plenty of people that will look things up on a wiki, sure, but there are also a lot of people that find these things out for themselves in the end.
I used to hate control, but I kinda just got used to it after a while. My left pinky is always curled while using my keyboard now so it's just not that hard for me to move it down.
my WASD controls and weapon + weapon related controls are the same. E is Slide Q is Dash F changes Fist Shift is Whiplash I have to mention I have 2 extra mouse keybinds I can use where my thumb is usually located. The layout of the mouse is as follows: (M1) (WHEEL) (M2) (M3) (M4) M3 is the fist button M4 is the variant weapon
I think I remaped my controlers like 3 times by the time I finish the normal game and then start hard mode, game is pushing me to the point I've to relearn how to use K&M (Using my pinkie on the K and middle finger on the mouse). Thx for the video Herb o/
OOOOOOH so thats why people sometimes struggle to hit the ctrl key. I never understood why until you showed how your hands naturally rest on your keyboard. With the way my hand rests, its actually tilted slightly to the right, which means that my little finger metacarpal naturally rests on the ctrl key. So all I have to do to press it is push my palm down slightly, which is super easy. I kinda forget that it wasn't always like this for me tho. I only started doing this when I started getting really into warframe cos I was having to mash the ctrl key constantly when doing parkour. All that being said I might still change the bind cos M4 is still a bit more convenient.
I use razor hex naga it has a ring of buttons on the mouse i use it to swap weapons fists and i still have 1 button left over since i like having alot of my movment and attack buttons on the right sode of the keyboard. The hex naga has been my daily mouse for years now it makes everything flow so much better especially for fps
i switch weapons by the mousewheel and just improvise with what i will get in my hands works quite well actually yes i can railcoin yes i p ranked all the levels
My binds: Slide: C Dash: V Feedbacker: F Knuckleblaster: G Whiplash: R (When the gold arm comes out that will be on T) Default weapon binds, pistol on 1, shotgun on 2 etc
I would change my keybinds, but i'm just way too lazy to test which functions would be good on which keys, so I normally just play with the normal keybinds
me who uses g600: btw binds: E. knuckleblaster Shift. slide 3. nailgun 6.railcannon 2. shotgun 5. dash 1. pistol 4. feedbacker 7. rocket launcher 8, 9, 0, -, and = are unused (sorry if the formatting for the number keys is weird, i was basing it off of the mouse)
I'm too comfortable with mostly default binds. Only thing I've changed in Ultrakill is rocket launcher on Q because 5 is too far away and I use the rocket launcher way too often, as well as feedbacker on F and knuckleblaster on G. Some keys like ctrl and G are a bit uncomfortable, but I haven't found any good replacements. Personally, I find using any mouse buttons other than mouse1 and mouse2 uncomfortable.
Yo, as a man who has different keybinds to yours (like, the whole thing has been changed), I'd like to tell you that you should change your knuckleblaster from g to c, it's closer to the movement keys, and I think it's just better. Do what you'll do
I have this weird thing called ‘being left handed’ so I have very fucked up keybinds. Movement: ijkl Feedbacker: h Knuckleblaster: n Whiplash: u Slide: m4 Dash: m5 Switch weapon variation: ; Revolver: o Railcannon: m Other weapons: scroll wheel
@@HerbMessiah nah, it is a bit different though, mainly with Ctrl, alt and shift, as they’re further away on that side. That’s why I usually rebind Ctrl and shift to my mouse buttons. Using wasd though feels horrible - you have to stretch your pinky super far to hit space, and your thumb rests around ctrl.
I haven't changed binds at all for ULTRAKILL at all until 14c patch dropped. With the new fist binds, I have F for feedbacker, and V for knuckleblaster. I unbound G because it now takes the noclip bind's place but maybe I could set it back because I don't really play much with sandbox or cheats anyways Aside from the aforementioned binds everything is left exactly the same as is
I have whiplash on E, rocket launcher on q and fists on m1 and m2, everything else default I personally don't struggle sliding with ctrl because I tilt my keyboard to the right a lot but my pinky still gets tired if I slide-spam too much
scroll weel for whiplash, backwards mouse button for feedbacker, and forward mouse button for RED ARM (forgot name) so far, I'm planning to update my weapon buttons from 12345 soon (might copy yours, and maybe putting one on tab, I've been debating it) I think that ctrl and shift work just fine for movement with my medium to small keyboard. I've been thinking of getting a one handed keyboard specifically for ultrakill, or one of those limited keyboards slanted and skewed to feel like a mouse for comfort
Sonce i have long fingers i dont really need to do too much change, the inly thing i change was the melee attack on the M4 of the mouse and the changing fist on the M5 of the mouse. But thanks for the advice
i barely have any have custom keybinds, i just have swap fist to q because g is too far, rocket to x because 5 too far and rail to c (which was suprisingly hard to get used to because no weapon cooldown is normally c)
