I learned that I need to get a savory breakfast, around 9 a.m., one of veggies, eggs, & cheese. A protien shake in the afternoon, that consists of flax seeds, chia seeds, no sugar added protien powder, maca root, ashawaga root powder, a scoop of natural peanut butter (no sugar), and hemp seeds. That will fill me up until about 3- 3:30 pm. I have a handful of plain, non-processed nuts,an apple, and/or cheese. Around 5-5:30 pm, I eat a small dinner with greens and protein. Done eating by 6 pm. This way of eating has helped me in numerous ways to control my appetite and weight. I strength train 3 times a week. I swim, walk, etc. throughout the week, too. I started taking HRT to combat my peri-menopausal symptoms last month, and it has been a great source to the missing piece I've needed to implement. Growing old gracefully with dignity is my goal. ❤
Knowledge is power. None of the women around me seem to be awake anymore. They are alarmed when I say I am going to pursue hormone replacement. I am sick and tired of post menopause symptoms. Keep getting the word out there.
People around me are the same way. I’m so much better on them than off them. I hadn’t slept well for 13 years. It continued into post menopause where I could no longer even function. In less than a week, I was sleeping all night long again.
My mom never told me. I had no idea what was happening to me, and I thought I was losing my mind. I had to research my symptoms online to learn that I was in perimenopause. My husband insisted I wasn't because he thought women didn't have it until they were 60 or 70! I listed my symptoms to my GP and she confirmed I was in perimenopause.
Same here. Last period 4months ago and I am now 58. Did not do anything special and not particularly more healthy than average. My mother was fully menopaused at 51, so not genetics either. I would not say I am lucky as I have endured perimenopause for the past 10 years.
Oh! Well, I was on birth control pills for 20 years. I had 2 healthy boys. So, I guess I’m in the prolonged group, but I just want my periods to stop. They’re so heavy and seem to last forever. 🙁
Thank you so much for your channel…I have really appreciated hearing from Dr. Mary Claire Haver and Dr. Mosconi!! I do have a question that I think other women will also want clarified. I was an intermittent faster for the past 5 years until recently. According to Dr. Stacy Sims, intermittent fasting actually increases oxidative stress in women and offers little to no benefit in autophagy. It also slows thyroid function in women. Of course, none of these issues occur in men who engage in intermittent fasting. For them, it is a benefit. So again, would love to have this point clarified!
🙏 Thank you @7:25 ; my mom was 44 y/o in 2004 & had a massive heart attack that left her with only 13% heart function. Her doctor didn't listen to her about the concerns she had and denied repeatedly to run her hormone panels. I'll never forget him coming to her during recovery begging her to forgive him for not taking her concerns more seriously.
that kind of behavior is criminal and should be punished. Nobody knows our body than ourselves. Ladies, trust your body when it sends you signals that things are NOT ok with your mind and body, do your research and insist to have your doctor run the tests you think you need. I learned my lesson as well, my primary doctor completely ignored my thyroid symptoms for more than a year, and got tested too late after I got Hashimoto's by my gynecologist who was a woman and fortunately thought my symptoms could be due to my damaged thyroid and she was right. But two doctors before my gynecologyst completely ignored me for almost a year and I suffered un-necessarily without proper treatment. I was going through hell and had horrible symptoms, and all of that could have been avoided by more competent doctors.
Wow! I just heard your 18m mark about earlier menopause and increased aging risks! So glad I found you when I did because I'm 50 and went through menopause naturally at 42!
Telling menopausal women to starve themselves through fasting is not doing many women service. Getting hormones regulated, regular exercise that they LIKE and not just to change body shape, managing stress in which restrictive dieting increases mental and emotional stress, and eating in a way to keep blood sugars in control that will help with sustainable energy and mentation throughout the day that is SUSTAINABLE and does not induce more disordered eating that women are subjected to, is what is healthy for both body and mind. Restrictive dieting tactics including demonizing certain foods like gluten for pete’s sake is not healthy. Let’s stop pushing women to extremes to force body shape change and move toward overall sustainable well rounded wellness. Carbs are not evil like rice, bread etc. it depends upon what else one is eating WITH that food and how much protein, healthy fats, and fiber in the overall meal or snack is what is important to understand. And eating “too much protein” will not not turn into fat. Period. I like Dr Haver in many areas but her nutrition knowledge is not well rounded and lacks insight into how restrictive dieting concepts can hurt women. Nutrition should be individualized per person. She admits to disordered eating thoughts and habits and being obsessive about her food and body shape and how unhealthy it became that her husband became worried about her. She needs to be honest about this.
Intermittent fasting worked for me. I have Celiac and can't eat gluten. If I do, I get a racing heart followed by stomach pains, followed by mood swings. I stopped having "bipolar" symptoms when I changed my diet too.
Fasting is a tool when done correctly. You obviously haven't read the research and all the success stories from this way of eating. Also eating a diet like you recommend is very much the reason many ppl are suffering from inflammation. When I got rid of starches, rice and bread I saw vast improvement. The human diet isn't as complicated as the mainstream makes it. I'm not celiac either I just think our mainstream diet is what is making some of us sick.
@@Shauna_naturesarboryoga I’ve been looking into it (always open minded) and I was very interested by Zoe Harcombe and Sean O’Mara. I come from a WFPB diet which I know is no longer serving me. It’s hard to unlearn it
My 2 fave lady Docs! You both are doing so good for us ladies. I’m same age as these ladies if you are in late 30s to 40s they are a Blessing. I had only a few resources back when I went thru but life gets better I promise if you eat clean, eat good fats, walk strength train and take magnesium plus sleep as priority to highlight a few ! ❤
I had no symptoms of menopause neither did my mother or sisters and at 61 I have a little bit of belly fat below my waist I do feel blessed when I hear what some of my friends are going through 😢
@jennifermoffitt7294 my heart & brain are good no utis. I do have wear and tear on my left hip and right knee but still walking 5k to 10k steps a day and lifting weights 2 to 3 times a day eating high protien diet and daily collagen. I'm not on any medication.
This is so me right now! I had no problem losing weight before and now, I hit a wall and nothing is working that I have done before! I'm trying the intermittent fasting and not eating past 6pm and see how this works
According to Dr Stacy Simms ,women in pero menopause and menopause should never do intermitting fasting. She is an expert on menopause with a lot of research done and scientifically proven research. Also she is a professor at Harvard university. According to her research when you do intermitting fasting you also increase the hormone cortisol and cortisol holds on to fat. Specially in the abdominal area.
No research study is ever 100% correct for everyone. It just has to be more than let's just say chance (50%), to appear to be true. Individuals are different, in terms of what works for them. What works for one may not work for another one.
Harvard does not mean anything. The current food pyramid of low fat high carb is designed by Harvard, and caused the current obesity pandemic. In Asian countries, elderly people eating 2 meals were very common. It all depends on people, and your life style. If you have other stressors in your life, you can not blame it is IF that added stress. Is it obvious?
My mother experienced very little of menopause symtoms and weight gain. But me, total opposite. I took hrt in my mid 40 s and 50 s. Great help. But when the doctor took away my hrt in my mid 50 s, I crashed. No sleep , belly stubborn fat. Dry skin, got afib. I am a mess at 74 years old. I feel fat and aging. I am fighting it but it is cruel that mother nature allows us to go thru this.🙄😏
I have never done any hormone replacement, I makes me nervous. I am adopted and have no good family health information. With that said, I feel I started my menopause somewhat later in life. I am 59 rn. In my 40s I had an ablation and so again I have no idea when my menstrual cycle stopped. I feel very confused about what I should be taking, only recently, within the past two years have I noticed a weight gain that I can’t get under control. I also for about a year prior to this weight gain, I was doing fasting. Felt very successful at it.
Well, one size doesnt fit all! I practices what you are calling IF for like 3 years while doing strength training and cardio....BUT: breakfast IS the most important meal of the day, it aligns us with our circadian rhythm and all! . For me, I only had to stop eating earlier.... so I eat from 8:30-6:30....and since I have added breakfast (continuing with my workout routinge), my body comp is beautifully changing!! Just saying....
Same for me! Basically My eating window too .... Mine is 5-5:30 . I eat 5 times a day, lift heavy. I use hrt. The guys at work think I lost 10 lbs but scale is the same at 148. Loads of energy. I feel 30. I'm 48. I eat 120-150 grams of protein each day
there was a woman who had a heart disease and was fobbed off by the doctors when she went, who said it was just menopause - sweating, dizzy, hot flashes, palps, feeling unwell, turned out she had full blown heart disease, and needed stents and was having a kind of angina attacks, so it's important for all women who are going through menopause to have a FULL cardiac workup - CAC score, all the right blood tests and so on... just saying. don't just accept a cholesterol test hers were normal and her diet was 'healthy' she didn't smoke. Because there are so many weird symptoms, getting proper facts about your cardiac status I think is more beneficial. there are tests you can have to tell you if you have heart disease, soft and hard plaque and general inflammation tests etc. I had a full workup including a treadmill ultrasound echo, and CAC and fifty blood tests and neck artery ultrasound. my daughter in law had the standard ultrasound to her lower legs during a 'well woman check' and they told her she had blockages in one leg told her to stop eating meat and dairy and so on, but she insisted on a second opinion turned out she has no blockages in her leg vasculature - the machine was faulty and when she used a proper doppler not a normal ultrasound that the first medical centre used, she had NOT blockages. They laughed it off but she was in distress thinking she had cardiovascular disease. Doppler is essential, and second opinions are essential. and dairy is not bad for you. my mother has been on estrogen in one form or another for 60 years and she's fine. as for food, I make my own pasta with Italian flour - one serve is 1 egg per 100g of flour - 1/2 teaspoon of extra virgin lie oil.... with a vegetable sauce (home made) made with five vegetables, and red lentils cooked down, garlic, herbs, etc... with parmesan and its 100 percent good food. easy to make. pasta without egg is just boiled flour.
When I at 46 realized I was getting hot flashes, getting angry when am such a peaceful person, found I had diabetes, i went carnivore. Keto is not enough. And my carnivore consists of tinned fish, greek yogurt and burger patties once or twice a week to recover from the gym. My current problem now which I always had was not sleeping and severe dehydration with heart palpitations that wont let me sleep. No hydrating powder or drink is fixing it. Maybe is time to go back to dr. Thanks for this information!
I’m torn through this season of being 51 and on HRT. I was a huge supporter of intermittent fasting. Then had to step back from it because I was experiencing hair loss bald patches. I weight lift and in gym 5 days wk. I want to build more muscle? Are you recommending that I return back to intermittent fasting? If so what is your take in protein ratio in a 6-8 hour eating window?
I agree with you both. Hopefully they will see our question and clarify. According to Dr. Stacy Sims, intermittent fasting is not good for women (increases oxidative stress and slows thyroid function), especially exercising women.
Intermittent fasting does serious damage to your body and your mind! I was huge into intermittent fasting and bodybuilding. Now that I’m 52 I have had five surgeries in less than three years all through my abdomen with severe severe digestive issues. Also, no one talks about eating disorders and intermittent fasting. It triggers those eating disorders and creates and Rex havoc than we ever imagined.
When my mom was in her 60's a female dr took out her hormone replacement that kept her alive for 20 years after a full hysterectomy. She said women do not need hormones at her age. After that she just went downhill rapidly. I wanted her to go find a dr to give them back to her but she never did and went crazier as everything in her body went out of wack for lack of a better word.
Does micronutrient content play a part in turning off PPY and CCK? There’s always mention of amino acids and fatty acids turning them off, but do we know about, for example, if vitamin B levels are low, vitamin D, selenium, etc, does this also affect satiety?
So, agree with your Mother's comments about subsequent generations not suffering as the generations that proceeded them have. We need to do better and you both are taking us in the right direction! Thank you for the conversation and elevating awareness!! Bring on change!
Idk- with all the cultural chgs- this problem is notgoing away. Doing better in the USA as food is being engineered and money gets tighter... women are under more stress. ...
Same here at 61. I also weight train 5 days a week, lift heavy safely, eat mostly protein and asparagus (other veggies make me bloated), 1 Ezekiel muffin or quinoa for carb with evening meal as helps me sleep better!
Is it ever too late to start? If you are past the window of opportunity that everyone talks about, is there any benefit to starting at 60? More than 10 yrs post menopause? Would love to hear someone address this.
I'm also interested in this. I'm 70. Never had any menopausal symptoms. But my bone density decreased dramatically. Can I start HRT now to avoid crossing the line to osteoporosis? I don't want to take any of the bone drugs.
This is a bit confusing. How can you fast and then eat small amounts of protein throughout the day? I’ve heard other things that say your body can assimilate way more than that. I’m 56 just went through menopause. I usually only eat two meals but when I eat those two meals, I eat a large amount of protein each one.
I did too. It literally happened so fast for me at age 56. One month I got it and the next it was gone. My last few years they were VERY heavy. Something to keep in mind...
@@colormecrazywithkim5837 oh, my! Mine are so heavy right now! I have to wear a pad even with a tampon. And they’re 5-7 days long. Then they started getting closer together, like every 21-25 days. Every month it’s just a few days early. I track my cycles and last year I had 14 periods in 12 months. I’m so looking forward to being done.
@@colormecrazywithkim5837were they still regular though, before they disappeared? I'm still quite confused about this at 48. I don't know how many years of perimenopause I have yet to go.
Can we talk about HRT with a partial hysterectomy? No uterus. No one will give me Progesterone + Estradiol - will only approve Estradiol use with DHEA. But I don't feel like it's looking at the whole picture. What do I say to my doctor to convince them otherwise?
Hey I always skipped breakfast and went till 12 or 1 but I heard recently that at my age 57 women should actually have breakfast I’m confused what do you think
I see women so many women that look great at 53 and I don’t understand why there not gaining weight through menopause ? Not even semiglutide is really helping me loose weight. I will try HT. My husband is great But I don’t see him concerned about his balding or huge gut hanging out. Not fair!
As a 60 years old. I never allowed hot flashes or other systems to determine my mood. Was not interested in taking HRT that might increase my risks of certain cancers
If you look at the data, it decreases your risk of breast cancer. The WHI study did not show a statistical increase. Cancer has treatments. Alzheimers and osteoporosis really do not.
Woman in peri or menopauze dont have to IF every day!! You loosing muscle mass!! You need muscles for you bones!! I IF 3 days a week..other days i also eat healthy, do longwalks, hydration, decrease og 95 % of added sugars, olive oil, no seed oils..take a walk after a meal for like 10 minutes! Im 55 and still have my periods
oMG I have. Been going to the doctors the past few years about my ears which have been driving me crazy they been giving me course of antibiotics what do you recommend I do for itching in my ears
Interesting, I went on HRT on 5/1 at 62. I had hot flashes, night sweats, low energy, belly fat and light sleeping habits. I have been a runner for 25 years, after 6 weeks I have better sleep, no hot flashes, but my HR is high, and does not regulate like it used to during a long run and seems high during weight lifting? I cut way back on alcohol and added more protein no belly fat improvement so far, energy is still low. How long should it take to see some improvements?
Are you taking this knowledge to more practitioners gynecologists? That would help women even more than just telling women on RU-vid that then go to their doctor and these doctors won’t believe them because blood work won’t show anything related to perimenopause……
Why everywhere I hear the fiber being touted as super foods, while innfact it is no other than waste. If fibre is that important in a human diet, then all the Inuit woman must be doomed, and couldn't make its to their current existence. My current is very low in fiber, as opposed to it many years ago while I was a vegetarian. I don't have any issues with low/ no fibres, my gut function is perfect, my mood is perfect which isn't supposed to be at 51 with all the perimenopause changes, no hot flush, no sleep disturbances. Why I mentioned all these, not to boast but to make the point that you can do fine wothout ingesting huge amount of fibre.
I am sorry, but when an "expert" says aspartame is somehow bad - I ditch the video, channel and the "expert". Aspartame is nothing but two amino acids - one is essential (your body will make it anyway), the other non-essential and found in your meats in MUCH higher quantities than in the little sweetener pill. She says to take protein from one side of her mouth and reject intake of amino acids from another - she obviously has no clue of what she talking about. Don't listen to the advices of these "experts" - same experts told everyone to load up on carbs three decades before.
Really? The phenylalanine in aspartame has been modified to give it a sweet taste. It's not the protein she says the body needs. Go ahead and eat all the fake sugar / aspartame you want and be "healthy."
Aspartame is not just two "amino acids", as they are found in nature. We know it can cause kidney and liver damage, increase obesity, as well as increase the risk for dementia. There is plenty of new scientific evidence that has discovered the risks of using aspartame. I have seizures if I use it, because of its neurological effects. It's banned in Europe. Europe doesn't allow a fraction of the crap in US food. Here in the US they will let you put untested things in food, before you know if it's safe. It's completely backwards how we do food safety. Not to mention the food industry has bought out the FDA. Nothing but Big Tobacco science surrounding our food safety. Also processed meats are known to have adverse health effects...
Unfortunately I agree with you to some degree. Everyone is an expert until the next study shows different recommendations. It's trial and error sometimes to see what works for an individual. Though overall most seem to think a Mediterranean style diet is beneficial.
