This is a wonderful quilt block! I made a similar one, but did a quilt-as-you-go, and did both sides at the same time with different color themes, and then sashed the finished blocks together. It was easy, once I got it going, and I used my batting under my main fabric to stabilize it, and when the block was done it was quilted, and once I squared each one up, they were ready to sash, and its completely reversible. I love it. One side is comprised of reds, golds, greens, and tans, while the other side has a blue theme.

@@debihinkle6100 I think a mix of widths looks nice in these blocks. You could make one and see if you like It. If you don’t then you can turn It into a potholder or hot pad. Hello Robin - I'm a pinner & I did that with every strip I sewed on my bluey quilt. After the first strips were sewn in the middle, I would then do both sides at the same time, working outwards & ironing as I go. Because they were large blocks I enjoyed doing one block at a time. One tip I liked from you today was how to sew & flip back the fabric strips, then cut off the excess fabric at the end. When I finally get around to doing this quilt I'll think about if I want to save all my black cut-off pieces for another project. I also thought about cutting all the black blades first then adding the fabrics to the sides. I thought your smaller blocks looked super cute - when I finally start I think I'll try a 6.5" & a 9.5" to see what I like best. Thanks for a great tutorial today - hope you have a nice weekend :)
@rsislandcrafts

I did tell think you could use a template to cut the center blade. Maybe add a thin stabilizer/interfacing so you don’t have to worry about the bias edges. Or starch the heck out of It 😀. Excellent tutorial! I like both the large and the original small blocks for different projects. I think the small blocks could be used in a bag, right? And the larger ones for a quilt or larger wall hanging. Fun! Also I like that you digress and insert ideas or your thought process here and there -- maybe because it's the way my explanations are: digressional! (Is that a word? If not, I'm making it one. But I digress!) Thanks again, Robin!

Good tutorial again, Robin! While you were going through it, I was looking for a way to make the center piece out of a strip to save fabric. I suppose it could be done, but then it would be on the bias. It doesn’t seem like it would be much of a savings anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I love the look of the tiny blocks, but I would get bored with making them awfully fast. I would probably make the large blocks for myself.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 года назад
You could make a template for the center blade but like you said then you have to deal with the bias edges. Lots of starch or a light weight fusible stabilizer would help but I wonder if it would be worth the effort. I think cutting off the corners of the foundation fabric, especially for the larger blocks, might be worthwhile. If I make the smaller blocks It would definitely be a long term in between project. Maybe make 2 or 3 a week or so.

RsIslandCrafts - Robin - That’s what I was thinking about the workarounds. It’s a prime example of the law of diminishing returns. I think mini quilting is just a different mindset. A mindset that is not mine. 😆 Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comments. Your videos brighten my day.

Exactly. How much extra work are you willing to do in order to save one step or a little fabric? Thank you! You're very sweet.

I got out a sketch book and stated measuring to what size I am about to start. It is not so easy.. I was trying to simplify it. I have no scraps I will be using all new material. So I may wait awhile till I attempt it. But I am calling it the black star or the double kite quilt top. Each of the black segments is a true kite design. The central diamond looks more like a kite to me. Anyway, I have it in my notebook and sized to 8 inches. Have not decided yet on whether to take away 1/12 inch or add 1/2 inch for the seams. will wait till I get ready to cut to decide.

I see nothing wrong with cutting fabric for a scrap project. That way you get It purposefully choose your fabrics and colors. I haven’t made one yet but I do have a bin of narrow strips waiting for me.

I would trim off the black fabric after the first stripped. Use that black on something else.

Love this block and it's really good for quilt as u go. Love the black center it makes your scrappy pieces pop. One question. Is there any issue with the center black piece being a thinner weaker point since it's one layer and the rest 2 layers with the scrap pieces?
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 2 года назад
I think if your black is of good quality then you should be fine. When you make a “normal” quilt block there is only one layer of fabric. The extra layer under the strings just makes it a bit thicker. If you’re doing this block as QAYG then after you sew down the first strip on the left and right of the “center” block section then you could trim away the “extra” black before you sew the rest of the strips. You could also make a paper template and sew the block like a spider web block. Happy sewing!! #createwithscrapitude

Would these blocks work using different widths of fabric strips? My scraps are all different widths and really don't want to trim if I don't have to.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts Год назад
Sure. They’re basically string blocks. I always suggest making a test block. Then you’ll know if you like how It looks and if your various width scraps work for you. If you don’t like It you can always turn It into a potholder or hot pad. Have fun!

Can I use 10-inch paper in order to save on black fabric?
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 года назад
It’s been awhile since I’ve made one of these blocks so I’m not 100% sure. My suggestion would be to go ahead and try It. Just make one block and see if it works. If not then you can turn It into a mug rug, a hot pad, or small pillow. Please come back and let everyone know if It works. I’m sure there are others wondering the same thing.

I made one using paper foundation because I thought that was the way to do it. I had not watched a tutorial on how to do it. What I did was make a pattern of that center wedge and cut those out of black fabric and centred them on the paper then continued with strips.

Great tutorial, why not just measure and then with a ruler draw a line down each side of your block. I have to see the line to "get it". May you could cut your foundation block a 1/2 inch larger to be able to square up to an even 10.
@rsislandcrafts
@rsislandcrafts 4 года назад
You could definitely draw a line if that is easier for you to visualize It. Then you would know you had a nice straight line in each block.

Your quilt squares are very pretty but your verbal directions do not seem organized enough to follow easily; lots of going back and forth from one direction or issue to another and then back again to the first direction that you decided to make a change on. Too hard to follow. Sorry.

Thank you for the feedback. It’s something that I’ve hopefully improved on since this video. It’s the way my brain works and I have had to learn to slow down and keep things in a more orderly way so that others can follow. Tutorial first. Various ideas after. Sometimes I just get a little excited and forget 🦩
