Ray and Zach discuss an oft-neglected topic of car buying: stock numbers! You know, that collection of numbers and letters near the VIN on online car listings? Depending on the dealer, they could tell you whether a car was purchased from somewhere previously, whether it was a trade-in, or whether it was a service loaner.

Zack, I worked at a car dealer with multiple franchises. So for example if stock began with PH that meant our car was purchased at an auction by the Honda store. Or if it begin with PM then it was purchased at the auction for the Mitsubishi store etc. So keep that in mind if you are looking at a dealer with multiple franchises. Also, another point is if you see a stock number that ends in AA. Then that usually means that when a vehicle was purchased they were 2 trade ins on the deal. The first trade-in gets the A at the end of the stock number and the second trade-in gets the AA.

At one point, I traded a piece of crap vehicle that I hated to see end up being purchased by an unsuspecting buyer. The car looked great. It had low mileage and was a vehicle that was desireable. The left front subframe was totally disintegrated due to salt. Amazingly the rest of the car was decent. But it was a serious safety issue to drive. Before I traded it, I made the dealer very aware of its condition and they promised to wholesale it in a neighboring state that has no state inspection. They kept their promise. However…….before trading it I hid multiple papers throughout the vehicle describing its condition. I hoped to save at least one unsuspecting buyer. Mission accomplished. In fact, two people who purchased the car found a hidden note. Both returned it to the seller for a full refund. I had included my phone number on the paper. I didn’t know what else to do.

Most volume new car stores dont keep the perfect low mileage trade ins on the lot - they get wholesaled at the auction and at those auctions you can find the perfect 10 to the crappy 1 -- the only difference for the consumers is what your dealership purchased there and brought to their lot to sell to their customers -i have been to some independent lots and some franchise lots that only carry the great condition perfect history cars and i have been to more franchise lots that carry the worst condition used cars as a way to force shoppers into new .

During the pandemic, people who leased were buying their leases out as the POP price was much cheaper than going to buy a new one. Also, during the pandemic, dealers stopped leasing as they were getting over MSRP if they went retail so now there are very few leases coming back 2 years later and therefore, less end of lease units available at auctions. Therefore, all you are seeing are poor trade-ins and repos going to auction. This is not to hard to figure out.

So, with the pandemic surge of used cars, many in deplorable condition, resulted in more people with poor credit purchasing the rolling turds of the used car market, relying on corner lot used car dealers who buy the cheapest auction stock. Good 'ol "Lefty's Garage, buy here pay here", and "We Finance, No Credit Bad Credit". Not a warranty insight. Dealers who will replace the 5w-30 with 20w-50 and some motor honey, and put in a can of head gasket repair and sealant compound to the radiator, etc. Their customers are also unable to pay the inevitable on-going repair bills. Interesting explanation on decoding the stock numbers.

3 months ago, I bought a used car from a local dealership and within 24 hours discovered some serious issues in the drive train. Dealership took it back, auctioned it off, and now it’s sitting for sale at another dealership half-way across the country. I feel bad for the unsuspecting customer that ends up with it. Makes me wonder how many used vehicles on dealership lots have this type of history.

This is an example of how I would not mind government intervention/regulation over seeing body, or what have you. I think all service records, repair records, collision records, should all be in one database for everyone to reference. There is certainly no personal information that anyone should push to hide in that stuff and if anyone does, it only shows their ulterior motives. in this day and age, there’s no excuse for not having perfect information enforced for these things. Just imagine what we really have with connected cars nowadays as to the error codes and how the car was treated.

Yet something else to consider in the various oddities of today's auto market. This morning I was speaking by phone to a body shop manager ( I need body work due to a small accident) who informed me through chit chat that they have around 400 cars on their lot (body shop, not sales) but can only work on 65-70 cars and booked out four plus months. I asked that's not typical is this due to the weather? he say no, it's due to part supply problems. Here's where is gets interesting as related to new/used car sales. He told me that insurance companies are deeming cars a total loss with far less damage than usual because the rental car costs will be so high. For example a 2022 Kia there was totaled at only 40% market value, typical total loss is not considered until the cost of repairs reach 70%. So the lack of available repair parts are to some degree driving used and new car purchasing which means it's just a bit worse than it appears.

I wonder whether the owners whose cars are getting repoed are just destroying them and beating them up, knowing that they’ll probably lose their car. Similar phenomenon occurred during the housing crisis back in 2007 and eight owners of homes stripped and destroyed the houses prior to repossession. are subprime car buyers, somehow harsher and rougher on vehicles? Is it too risky to buy a car that was prior owned by someone whose credit was subprime?

Reverse caveat: buy from a reliable, professional whether or not from an auction. Example---2005 Subaru Outback Limited 145K from a local used Subaru independent dealer from an auction in 2016. Cost $8500. with no negotiation since he was fixed on price. This car did a x country trip coast to coast with NO problems in 2016. It now has 340 K with no major problems ( rear door is stuck closed ! ). Yes, we did an independent inspection. The 2nd car is a CPO 17 Outback off lease bought from a Subaru dealer with the usual negotiated cost and trade in. JMNSHO for auction vehicles.

Traditionally and likely still today new car dealers usually sold a car to auction for a number of reasons. During 2021-22 they might have kept and sold ones they might have normally sent to auction as needed something on the lot and could make some money on. If in rough condition with body or interior damage, significant rust, mechanical or electrical problems needing expensive repairs or reconditioning. Are a known problem brand/model (electrical, engines, transmissions like last generation Ford Focus with the DCT automatic). Had been a 'lemon', with a bad problem history. Very poorly maintained. Had been in a major accident that shows up in a Carfax or similar check. High mileage (over 100K). With some exceptions, more than 7 years old. Odd models or body styles that are difficult to sell. While some used to have a 'as-is' section and sell direct, they don't want the liability risks. Not their 'brand' or that they sell at that site or another.

Here in Chicagoland most of the vehicles that have sold for up to $7k at the dealer only auction need some work, has higher than average miles or both...and for the most part when it sells it goes for well over the MMR or Black Book value... Now when it comes to the private party and retail value KBB and Edmunds (which are full of 💩) will have values to reflect why dealers are impulsively bidding up even near junk vehicles over the MMR or Black Book value... and as I said before, most people here don't do their own VIN check, so most used car dealers get away with selling vehicles that have a rebuilt title and mileage discrepancy.
