I’ve owned 996 Turbo and 997 Turbo. Cool cars for sure but the cost of owning one now make them pretty hard to own. Now VW own Porsche servicing and parts have gone through the roof. Both of my cars required coolant hoses replaced at 70,000km. Seriously expensive but if you don’t then you’re up for an engine meltdown with NO warning. Brace yourself, set of front brakes, coolant hoses replaced and full service at 70,000km , just under $20,000. I’m pleased I’ve owned a few Porsches but no more for me. Cheers
Adam, yourself and Jim are a great team, and both of you are an enjoyable and easy listen. Great show as usual. Ps, if those wheels were black, they'd set that car right off. IMO
I have always wanted one but, I have now resigned myself to the fact that I'll never own a Porsche 911 in my life. The prices are just too far out of reach.
Pricing in Japan is way cheaper , can’t work out why so many cars in Australia are so over priced it’s crazy. Hell you can pick up a Aston Martin Vantage say a 2008 for like 45k AUD here in an MT so that magic third pedal 😂
I have. 997.1 here in south Florida. I hardly drive it - 50k miles - our 2-door Wrangler is the daily. Tons of Bentleys, Ferraris, Aston’s, Rolls’, Gwagens, etc here in Palm Beach, but I have to say my 997 always gets second looks, even from Ferrari drivers. Lots of gas pump convos. This car punches far above its weight in respect. However - you would think that after refining this model for so many years, it would be a quality build. It’s all the little but expensive annoyances that get to you- disintegrating A/C channel flap foam, designed to save 1oz of weight but fail after warranty; the broken plastic retainers for the too-clever cup holders ; the melting console knobs and cheap plastic screen; clever door latches that fail - just all kinds of annoying crap that’s ridiculous to try to fix. My 997 looks really high-end from the outside, the leather seats, dash, headliner, etc are terrific - but after awhile all the little things, just opening the door even, feel cheap.
I live in Sydney, and the other day I saw a GT4RS pull out of the Porsche dealership. The man driving it out into peak hour traffic was the most scared I’ve seen someone in a loooong time lmao
I totally agree. What is the point in buying one for driving in Australia? There are more traffic cops on the road than fleas on a dingoes back. I lived in Sydney for 2 yrs and got 3 speeding tickets and I was driving a Ford Laser ffs.
I agree, Sydney is the worst. I got three tickets and now with just 1 demerit pt left... lost 5 pts & $400 just for holding my phone in slow traffic at night trying to enter an address because the bluetooth wouldn't recognise the address I was saying. Time to move out of this god-forsaken tyrannical city. I can understand why the Europeans hate our roads here.
@@axiomic The roads are a pain in Sydney with 47 million no right turns, one ways, no entry etc, but the major issue is that it was never designed, it just sprawled. When they did try to design, it was too late, but they had a go, mate. Trouble was they were all pissed after a session down the pub and they made it worse. Having fucked up the city roads, the State police forces hid 10 million cops behind every bush from Melbourne to Brisbane and terrorised the motorists to earn revenue for the bludgers in the government
@@csjrogerson2377 I Know what you mean. On a recent drive from Sydney to Brisbane on the Pacific Hwy, the speed limit suddenly, and inexplicably, changed from 110 km/h to 100 km/h for a few km. Sure enough, there was a speed camera. Then, just as inexplicably, back to 110 km/h limit again!!
Current Adelaide 981 Cayman owner here. Also owned a few 987.2 Caymans in the past too. Good review. Love the 997 and have always wanted to own one. But I just didn't want to roll the dice with the older cars. Best to play it safe and drive a solid newer Cayman until I can afford a 997.2 or 991. The Cayman is likely just as good to drive anyway.
Used to work at The Bend Motorsport Park, seen many Lambos, Ferraris and other exotics go home on the trailer regularly, rarely seen a Porsche fail, just saying.
Tried it, club head speed dropped from 88-90 to 78-84 and I started slicing like crazy. Went back to my own lousy technique and back to 88-90, but at least I am on the fairway most of the time. I'll have to try something different....😢
05 997.1 Carrera S owner here in Aus, love the review, they are a fantastic car.. Bloody good looking and practical. I'm a dad with a 2 year old and a 4 year old.. This was my dream car from my teenage days and I managed to make it work.. I fit two booster seats in the back, a stroller in the frunk, there's still enough room for a few shopping bags.. SUVs suck, rebel by buying a 911 :P Maintenance wise, it's been pretty solid, I am very mechanical and these are an absolute breeze to work on for the most part. Granted I did obsess far too much over the fear mongering on rennlist over bore scoring but I scoped it when changing the plugs and it's in pretty good shape with over 170,000ks on the clock, uses well below the Porsche stated oil consumption figures.. And bloody hell don't stress about soot on the tail pipes, its a tail pipe! they get dirty! I picked the .1 over the .2 because you can get them in manual, 997.2 is near impossible to find in 6mt. Also if you live in an area with sh!t roads, you'll curse your council daily because being a 911, you feel the road, bumps and all.
Great video, as always. Thanks for putting up such quality content; this channel is a gem 😍 I own a 997 carrera S for 6 years now and it's a keeper. You've done your research, everything you've said in this video regarding issues and things to look at are true. Although I won’t say that borescoring is that marginal. A lot, and I mean A LOT of m96/m97 engine equipped cars have had their engine replaced, and most of the time it was due to borescoring. When I bought my 997, the engine had already blown at 60000km. Good news is that you can put iron sleeves in the cylinders which will reduce drastically / eliminate the borescoring issue (but it's expensive and usually done when you perform an engine rebuilt). There is other cylinder liners available such as Nickies cylinders from LN Engineering (expensive but even better than iron). Porsche club of America did a series on the borescoring issue, check out their youtube channel and website.
Ive just gone thru the process of buying a car in this range. Ive wanted a 911 and looked at the 997, considered a m2, drove a bmw supra and ended up getting a F-Type Jag (v6 supercharged) and so happy i choose that over the Porsche and the supra as a road car. Plus it was on average $15,000 cheaper than the others too.
The 997 Gen 2 was a MASSIVE improvement over the Gen 1 997's. Made in a completely new factory built with significant global assistance from quality engineering giants , most notably Toyota, the increase in the quality of the cars is staggering. Porsche has forever eliminated any quality criticisms it once had. As an enjoyable daily driver sports car, this series is unbeatable, however, even in S trim, could use a bit more power to make it a hard core sports car. I had an extremely early 997 Gen 2 911 S Cabriolet, one of the first off the new line, and finally gave in to the senior Toyota executive that had pestered me for years to sell him this particular car which he had apparently seen on the line while he was advising Porsche.
For some reason the 911s in almost all variations look like a frog that's had bad botox done 😂. The 997 gets the same fuel consumption as last week's 350Z but with a bigger engine so either the 350Z has shit fuel efficiency, the 997 has good fuel efficiency or something else is at play that I can't think of at the moment. Bar the odd outlier these seem like pretty stout units if they maintenance is kept up to them. Good work guys as always and look forward to Sunday's video as per usual 👍.
19:00 I'm worried 997 are going to absolutely catapult in price in the coming years because of this exact reason. 992.2 owners are constantly complaining about how cushiony their expensive shiny new porsches are because they make them too soft and the electric throttle and steering is just not tuned well at all despite them being $200k+ cars.
@Redriven, don’t dare do a review of a current GT3RS or GT4RS with the indigo blue colour package with the danger of the blow back on wheel colour . Too funny.
The 997.1 never had a reverse camera as an option to begin with. The sport chrono small hands also pop off in the Aussie sun. If you bang the dash in front of it you will usually see the little hand bounce around inside of if.
I have chosen used porsche model if you like a light sport car. Compare to similar priced more recent sport cars, porsche models are extremely lighter! Don't just compare the HP / torque numbers!
Love this review l was thinking of buying one and l did it have any anyone to answer all my questions where you guys have 👍🏽👏🏽would you have a Porsche 997? Carrera S. Or a BMW M2 or M3 that’s what I’m toying with and not sure what to get the Carrera S has lost it’s money already and is a classic but the BMW M cars still have to lose money but they are newer any advice would be appreciated great review from the uk 🇬🇧 👏🏽👏🏽🤜🏽
Just my 2 cents. I went from a 997.2 gts to a g80 m3. It was a huge downgrade in feel and sound and a modest step up in performance (not that noticeable on the street). In hindsight I should have kept the 997 longer.
My cousin picks up his brand new, last of the petrol engine, new turbo s in a few weeks, hope to cruise for an evening on the GC with him when it comes to brisbane.
What is rocket surgery by the way? 😂 I thought it was rocket science but clearly I've been missing out. 😆Loved your video once again ReDriven! EK Civic down the track (pun intended) please 👍
A hell of a lot of 997 for sale I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, grey imports, bad mods, faked service history. Buy the seller is a critical aspect of buying a used 911. No problem buying one at the lower end and do the deferred work yourself or paying to have it done, ugly duckling stock cars can be a great base for something great. Importing parts and having lots of patience is worth while too. On my 911 I have basically added half a cars worth of GT3 parts but at used money. One last thing, unless u desperately want a convertible, just wait and get a coupe. The 996/997 roof set up sux, very few people left working on Porsches can actually fix it when it breaks and it's just not a good thing. If u must have a convertible get an early manual roof car or a 981 Boxter/718 Boxter. I'm car obsessed, my whole life is cars and dreaming about what to get next, I have 3 Porsches now. I don't have endless resources, I concentrate on cost of ownership, bought a Panamera and a Cayenne GTS used with long long Porsche warranty and have retained a lot of value. Anyone can buy a Porsche.. If you buy a really decent 911 it's literally a rolling investment, cash in 911 form. You only live once..
Why am I watching this as I can't afford one 😂 Actually I've seen this car in upper north shore suburbs a Co ple of times, like many, I don't agree with the choice of the wheels/rims 😅 Honestly I didn't expect the mention of OG F87 M2 🎉
Sorry, but bore scoring on the 997.1 is not remotely overstated. It's epidemic, probably at least 30% of .1 Carrera and Carrera S have failed with bore scoring at this point and quite possibly significantly more. There are countless cars out there with engine replacements under warranty, full engine rebuilds and so on. There are yet more that have had a cheap fix with one or two steel liners that current owners won't even know about. So, yes, IMS is generally overstated. Bore scoring on the 997.1 is not.
HI Adam and team Redriven, been watching your videos for a while probably since last year, really like the way you explain and even followed one to buy my car. All your sponsors are good, but Driva is not the best one. They are one of the worst ones on the market, I actually requested loan from them, and they didn't help much. Instead, I went to a local broker he helped with the same documents and got me a deal. Honestly, recommended your channel for the reviews but as a consumer I won't recommend your sponsor! Thanks for the great videos!
