@@IWantToBelieve1 In spite of the corporate NFL's conservative image, NFL Films(what started as Blair Motion Pictures by the legend Ed Sabol, until the NFL purchased the company for his permanent services) has been an absolutely ground breaking organization in the world of sports videography and video documenting. They really changed how sports was retroactively documented, copious amounts of slow motion, a couple orchestras worth of live musicians for bespoke music, the 'epic narration', the whole thing. In fact, it's incredible how NFL Films' historic content holds up - it's all just so damn well written and crafted

NFL Films has always been given a pretty wide, independent berth to work within, and I think that Ed Sabol probably got something in ink about such latitudes when he sold his company to the NFL. They've always been about the story though, in spite of how Corporate may look at times. Mind you, this is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to talk about when this material is 15, 20, 30+ years old - they certainly have never dove into the contemporary controversies surrounding Corporate; but, they'll for sure make a documentary about it in 20 years

Fryar turned out to be a real piece of trash, found guilty of multiple real estate frauds with his mother.

The Bucs were a bad situation for everybody- Young included. Getting traded to the Niners, to learn behind Montana for that great franchise, was the best situation Young could have possibly been in. It's possible history is completely different- maybe he wouldn't have panned out with Cincinnati in the mid 80s since he had some learning to do. Maybe he does and the Bengals beat SF in the 88 Super Bowl. It's an amazing story, full of "what ifs"

He didn’t actually make $40M from the USFL. He made around $4.8M on that deal. The structure of the deal was he got $4M up front and then base salaries for the four years and at the end of the four years there was an annuity that would’ve paid him the remaining money of the deal over around 40 years. Young has spoken on it that the owner of the team offered to pay him the remaining $1M of the base salaries he was owed or he could fund the annuity with that money. Young chose to take the money because he says the owner insisted that the annuity had to remain in his name and not Steve’s so he took the money and moved on. A lot of the big money USFL deals that lured guys from the NFL were like that where they were big guarantees compared to the money of the day but the team owners couldn’t just pay them the money like a normal deal. They were all backloaded with long structures and none of the guys actually made what they were supposed to have made because none of the owners in that league had the money to simply pay them under normal contracts. All the USFL stuff that got top guys was just sticker advertising that nobody actually saw and then the league tanked anyways. Cool league but never had a chance to last because none of the owners had the money to last like the NFL did.

Its also a reason he would not want to be drafted by the colts in 1984 after they moved.

@Fries You do know Boomer was a 2nd round pick? The BALTIMORE COLTS finished the 83 season with a 7-9 record. That meant the 7th pick in the 84 NFL Draft. In addition they had Denver's 1st pick, 19th in the 1st round. And they also had the 35th pick in 84. Boomer was the 38th pick in 84. If the BALTIMORE COLTS weren't stolen and stayed in BALTIMORE, they would have taken the Maryland QB in the 84 draft.

@Fries Steve Young's $40M contract didn't help. NFL teams didn't want to get into a bidding war for Boomer. Some of the team in the top10 needed a QB, but other needs needed to be filled.

Reggie White did post two double-digit sack seasons in 1985: 13 with Memphis and then 11.5 more with the Eagles

How often was rozier used in the nfl is the big question. In the usfl he was the main back. More opportunities there. It’s not a question of which league was better.and yes Reggie White came into the nfl fresh from the usfl and came in kicked ass and took names. Just like nobody could block him in the usfl nobody could stop him in the nfl. A lot of usfl players came in and made an immediate impact for their nfl clubs

Rozier was a highly coveted RB by the NFL. He was expected to be the workhorse! He would gain 1,000 yards for the Oilers within a couple years. He didn't have the HOF career expected but he had a good career!

I've always preferred the "fly on the wall" style of presentation over the "made for TV" presentation that most of this rather straight forward and deliberate content is typically presented in. Trump's involvement was a major reason the league started.

Trump wasn't involved in starting the USFL. The USFL was the brainchild of David Dixon. He was the Lamar Hunt of the USFL and always envisioned it as a spring league that didn't compete directly with the NFL. He stressed fiscal responsibility to prevent the financial problems that plagued the WFL. The owners almost immediately went against his plan by paying outrageous salaries to compete with the NFL for the best college talent. This caused financial problems for many franchises. Trump bought the Generals after the USFL's first season in 1983 and he started convincing other owners that the USFL should compete directly with the NFL in the fall, and he also thought suing the NFL would be a great idea. Who knows if Dixon's original idea of spring football that didn't try to compete with the NFL would have worked out, but we do know that competing directly with the NFL and overpaying players was a very bad idea, and that was the plan pursued by several owners, including Trump.

@@joediesen1 LA's owner, J. William Oldenburg, also spent a lot of money he didn't have. The USFL had several owners who probably shouldn't have been owners due to their financial situations, but also had some good owners- Bassett in Tampa was one. He passed away from brain cancer, i believe, which means the USFL lost a strong advocate of staying the course for spring football to find their own niche.

But Trump is a financial genius that turned $1 million into billions.

The XFL is backed by the NFL this time around. All tryouts and such are recorded into the NFL database. It is essentially the "minor leagues" for the NFL. Unsigned and undrafted players mostly. Think of it as "live game action practice". I think it will stick around this time and probably be a good thing for the NFL as a whole.

LT was often double or even triple teamed on virtually every play, which left Banks wide open to get to quarterback or whoever had the ball. And Wilber Marshall is a part of one of the best defenses of all time. Boomer, Fryar & Byner were all very underrated at their positions.

The NFL was cheaper. Trump knew that it might not work out and did not want to be on the hook for paying huge contracts like the LA Express did with Steve Young who got $40 million dollars for playing one season for the USFL. Trump was smart not cheap. If the USFL would have worked out he would have paid. That is called good business.

@Fries The NFL held the USFL Supplemental Draft in June of 84. The USFL season was still going on.

Shows you how different the pre salary cap NFL was. If a team didn't mind spending money, they could hoard backup quarterbacks like Steve Young and Hostetler on the roster for years while some teams had to start Bubby Brister.

The Draft isn't law, just rules that NFL teams follow. If they sign a legal USFL employment contract that's it.

If I remember correctly they had the rights to that player for 5 years (the length of a rookie contract back then). Irv Eatman, Anthony Carter and a few other USFL players were drafted by the NFL in the '83 draft and the teams that drafted them still owned their rights when they made their way into the NFL in '85 and '86.

@Rondough Howell The USFL was more about forcing a merger and beating the NFL than anything else. Thats why they were paying top dollar for players like the Old AFL did. The difference was the NFL was prepared plus The old AFL had better ownership than the leagues that have come in since. Lamar Hunt, Bud Adams, Ralph Wilson and Al Davis. The AAF was trying to become more of a developmental league for the NFL.

Kelly played in Houston, the Gamblers I think... Not in Jersey...

@@joebarrett7651 Yes, the Gamblers did merge with the Generals in the spring of 1986, anticipating a fall season. Kelly appeared on the cover of SI in a Generals uniform. But after the antitrust trial, the USFL shut down rather than play in the fall.
