You could replace the seconds hand with a clear piece of acrylic to really make it look like the bird is flying!

Go a step further and don't even make an individual seconds hand, make an acrylic disc the full diameter of the clock face and glue/paint on the seagull! Some watches do this and it really sells the illusion, you can't really tell that the disc is rotating and it would truly look like the seagull is flying.

and the upgrade you suggested may be even better now that I picture it! there would only be the shadow of the seagull instead of the hand moving, and the disc would also serve as protection

This looks so good!!!! A quick island geology note: an atoll is also a thing, it wasn’t just Katelyn forgetting the word archipelago! An atoll happens when you have a volcanic island in a place where coral can grow, and in all the shallows around the island a coral reef grows. Then, as the volcanism subsides, the island will become a donut shape, with basically a ring of coral island around a center lagoon where the island was originally. So this clock kind of is an atoll! I feel like it’s a volcanic island with a super super long recharge period. So the island was basically gone, and the ring of coral islands had formed, and then the center island reformed during a period of volcanism. So not only is this beautiful, it’s also geologically accurate(ish)!

Mangroves are a type of tree. They grow in intertidal zones of tropical, subtropical and protected coastal estuaries. 🙂 Usually a good place for catching fish when the tides in.

8:40 I recommend a stay-wet palette for acrylic paints, they dry way too fast for me without it. You can DIY one by putting a couple damp paper towels under a sheet of baking paper and then keeping it in a tupperware/air tight container to stay wet overnight

Fun facts from a geologist: Geologically speaking this seems more like a dormant shield volcano with a barrier reef that has spots poking up in some areas forming islands around it. So the atol kayelyn mentioned isnt far off, seeing as that would be the next stage as the dormant volcano sinks into the ocean as time goes on.

This is so so beautiful. I grew up in the Bahamas and lost my childhood home to hurricane Dorian before I turned 18. I've had to live in Minnesota for the past 4 and a half years and I miss my home so much. This clock brought back so many memories. There are islands scattered everywhere in the Bahamas and my favorite beach had lots of mangroves on it. You guys got the water the PERFECT color and the waves make it look that much more amazing. This clock looks so much like home to me I almost started crying. You guys are so talented.
