Thanks man, worked great for me. I have a pvc pipe leading to my garage, that has a faucet for a hose. Well the faucet sticks up about a foot n a half off the ground and my weed wacker put a nice crack in it resulting in a geyser. Once I got the water shut off, I followed your instructions. Make sure to put it on as tight at you can get it. It took a pipe wrench.... but its holding. Thanks for the edumacation sir!

Excellent video, had to replace a hunter valve so saved me a lot of time digging to get some flexibility on the line in and out. The normal cut, glue coupler to line, glue male adapter to short line and thread. now I just use this. Another selling point is that if you do all the valves like this replacing a broken valve is easy, no cutting and reattaching the water lines in or out, just remove, attach to new valve and reattach compression couplers.

Thanks Dave! We're glad the video helped you. While a compression coupling is a great way to repair a broken line, we would not recommend using them for valve manifold construction. However, you can use a union instead to make swapping out a valve much easier when doing repairs. Here's a link to the product: www.ewingirrigation.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=pvc+union

I'm doing a repair tomorrow. 3/4 cpvc to 3/4 black steel pipe. The coupling I bought has the gaskets inside the center tube. I noticed you slid them upwards on the pipe. Should I leaves the gaskets in the tube and slide pipe in,........or should I remove gaskets,..slide them up on the pipe as you did,...and then crank down the way you did it? Should I use pipe dope on it?

My dad does maintenance for some properties. One house was illegally hooked up to the city's water line. No meter. IDK where it came from. Thing is we needed to disconnect that water line and cap it so we could reconnect the old well pump. OMG these things saved us bc it involved getting showered once we broke that connection. He failed to get it on right at first so after a couple hundred gallons we finally capped it. That was a real fun job.

Great information. On my pool equipment I have a Pentair Rainbow 320 chlorinator which I want to remove. I’m not sure, but I think it is a 1&1/2 or 2 inch pipe. Do you think that this would work? Thanks
@ewingoutdoorsupply
@ewingoutdoorsupply 3 года назад
Yes it will work if you don't have too large of a gap to fill. You will also want to make sure that there's no movement in the pipe when the pump cycles on and off. Movement can cause the compression coupling to fail over time. You may also consider using a slip-fix repair coupling. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--fXzaYGn1sM.html&ab_channel=EwingIrrigation%26LandscapeSupply

I tightened my compression coupling by hand and it's dripping out one end after I turn the water on. I noticed that the rubber grommet has a beveled edge and matches the beveled angle of the inside of the main body of the coupling. Does that mean it's tightened too tight, and squeezing the rubber grommet too much to where it doesn't seat properly and leaks? Or should it be tightened further using a pipe wrench? Which situation is more likely? Too tight or too loose? I've used PVC couplings successfully on galvanized steel pipe and never had a problem until now. They make steel couplings but they're heavier and cost more. I only use steel when the stores are out of the PVC couplings.
@ewingoutdoorsupply

If the gasket is not damaged and seated properly and there's nothing else interfering with the seal, then you can use a tool to tighten it further. Thanks for watching!

Quick tip I learned tonight: Do NOT use lubricant to help slide the rubber gasket on. The water pressure will very quickly push the lubricated pipe out of the end of the fitting. Seems obvious now, but like they say, hindsight drinks Mad Dog 20/20.

Good advice! Thanks for the comment.
@Soknik01
@Soknik01 6 лет назад
Destinedtodie I've found that it's usually not a problem as long as you rinse the lubricant off of the pipe after positioning your gaskets. I've made the same mistake your talking about more times than I care to mention. Try liquid dish soap for lube. Slippery as hell and super easy to rinse off prior to pressure testing.

Fyi, mine did not hold on a 1” line repair at full line pressure. I used it on a repair under roots so there was a flex hose on one side. Maybe that is why it did not hold. I tightened with channel locks on both sides. I am going to try one of the telescoping couplers next. Trying to avoid a big re-route around tree.

Can I use them to repair a broken main water line underground? I'm asking because I'm not sure it will hold high water pressures. Thanks
@ewingoutdoorsupply
@ewingoutdoorsupply 5 лет назад
Depending on the manufacturer, compression couplings are generally rated around 150 PSI. You can use them as a temporary fix but for a long term repair it's best to solvent-weld in a new section of pipe. You can try using a length of PVC and a couple of couplings but some contractors prefer to use a series of elbows or 45s with PVC pipe to make the repair. Good luck with your repair and thanks for watching!

Thanks Daniel! You just need to remove enough to get the body of the fitting in place and not so much that you can't get a good seal with the gaskets on each side. Thanks for the question!

I think you should give the specification for each one. For example if your pipe is broke at the coupler and you had to cut it a compression coupler may not work based on the gap between the cut. The slide fix allows you so many inches between, so each one is for a specific application they are not inter- changeable. So if you have 4 or 5 inches of a broken pipe a compression coupler may not work. What is the best specification for a compression coupler in inches? vs a slide fix in inches? vs inches of a simple coupling? --its not a contest of who is better than who its really about finding and using the right product by specification. The piper breaks at a previous coupler --4 or 5 inches of a cut when does the compression coupler not work ? I hope I said that right...tired of mentally wrong answers

You assumed the pipes on both sides were free to move which is not the case for repair. What is the proper distance between the ends?
@ewingoutdoorsupply
@ewingoutdoorsupply 8 лет назад
+L. Huang You'll have to dig out dirt around the pipe enough to allow for some flex in the line on one side of the break. Keep in mind that you want to remove just enough existing PVC to allow enough space to fit the compression coupling components on. First slide one compression end with gasket as well as the sleeve onto the side of the line you have dug out to provide some flex. Slide it far enough over to expose the break so you can then add the second compression end and gasket to the opposite side. You can then center everything over the break and tighten it all down. If you are unable to use a compression coupling you can always try a slip-fix repair coupling which "telescopes" into place. This option will require gluing though - www.ewingirrigation.com/1-2-slip-fix-repair-nipple.html

If i wanted to know all the different kinds of coupling to repair PVC pipe, this would suffice. HOWEVER, when using a compression coupling to repair a REAL PVC line break, you don't have two independent pieces of pipe laying their to be connected with the compression coupling. You have to locate the break, evaluate and probably cut out a split section. Often times you have to add in some line when repairing a larger break. THEN, the MOST IMPORTANT thing to HOW MUCH OPENING do you need to fit on the compression head to connect to the ends. This was ridiculous!
