THANKS FOR DOING THIS!!! I'm in the Seattle, Washington (USA) area with lots of great lake fishing opportunities and no one uses a drogue........ Therefore, your video is invaluable. Looking forward to receiving my 1st drogue and learning how to use it. 🙂🙂
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
It will make your life afloat so much more enjoyable especially on windy days . I suggest practicing with the sliding set up which offers a huge amount of control on your drift . Thanks for watching .

@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 Does anyone "over there" use a drogue with an inflatable pontoon? I bought a small, cone-shaped drogue that I plan to use with my PAC 800 & 900 inflatable pontoons. (I also bought a Wychwood Competition drogue to use with 14' aluminum rental fishing boats.) I'm trying to determine how far the line from the back of the pontoon frame to the drogue lines connection should be? I'm guessing only about 3 to 6 feet.... Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance. 🙂🙂
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@@ronmcneal1569 pretty short if your using the lines the drogue came with I would say . The longer the lines the more the platform or boat will Yaw in the wind .

Great vid. I took a disabled angler out in a the great big metal boat at Chew Valley Lake and my drogue hardly made a difference. Not sure what to do next time. Two drogues or make a much bigger one. I also wondered if the conical shaped ‘sea anchors’ might be more effective.
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 4 года назад
A larger drogue may help as those disabled boats have a big surface area and catch the wind more . I would try longer ropes in this case to anchor the drogue . Space the G clamps nice and wide to increase the surface area of the drogue . There shouldn’t be a need for a second drogue .

Guess where I’ll be this afternoon! In the shed drilling G clamps and building a sliding rig for my drogue! 😂

@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 so I did it on the weekend. But have a question. I don’t think it will make a massive difference but when you say 12ft of rope, do you mean in total or from the G clamp to the drogue? There is about 3ft between the G clamps with the sliding rig.
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@@Mikewakelyn 12ft from the clamp this will be less probably 8ft if using the sliding method allowing for the ropes to join in the middle
@Mikewakelyn
@Mikewakelyn Год назад
@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 thanks. Mine are 12.5ft in total so as you say, 8ish from the clamp as I intend to use the sliding rig. Cheers Tim.

Great video Tim, just would have liked a bit more detail on what side needs tweaked for different on to/off and along shore drifts ….. 🐟👍❤️
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
set it up as a sliding drogue and have a play about . Basically if you want the boat to crab right shorten the right hand rope /lengthen the left hand rope ... want the boat to crab left shorten the left hand rope lengthen the right hand rope ... the sliding drogue set up is bar far the easiest for this

Nice informative vid! Do you always pull the drouge in when motoring, or leave it to ride in the water?
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 4 года назад
I will normally pull it in . For the time it takes it saves a potential tangle or putting it in the motor when moving . Also I hate to drag a drogue over fish that are high in the water . Its good practice to bring the drogue in when travelling .

Tim, I can see you were using a boat on Chigborough - was that by arrangment as they do not seem to have any for rent?

@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 3 года назад
They have 2 boats on Home water and one on Rook hall . All are available to rent on the day , no pre booking .

Great info thank you. Roughly how thick is your drogue ropes?
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 2 года назад
This is 10mm 'cod end' Nylon from a commercial fishing pal of mine . Anything from 5mm -10mm will be fine . I like the slightly thicker stuff as its much less prone to tangling .

Sure , no probs . As long as the fishing allows . I usually fish CDCs early season on Chigboro so will definitely put together a vid for you . They are really no different to fishing any other dry fly ... and I never gink my CDCs ;)

Are the ropes on at the center points of the side's, or on all four corners?
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769

All four corners , they open up and collapse easier that way
@davidwillacy4796

Hi Tim thanks for the great video. Is it possible for a single angler in a boat to fish with the drogue over to the bow to slow the drift right down when the conditions are a bit windy? You could use a length of rope tied to one of the carabiners to pull and collapse the drogue at the end of a drift maybe? Cheers
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 3 года назад
I would set up a sliding drogue as shown and have the G clamp on the stern end set nice and close to me for easy adjustments , you can then use this near end to easily collapse the drogue with one pull of the rope. By having the drougue set too far off centre in the boat you will cause jarring and an uneven drift as most boats will naturally drift bias to the stern .
@davidwillacy4796
@davidwillacy4796 3 года назад
@@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 Hi Tim , maybe I haven’t explained myself very well. If the drogue is attached to the very most fwd part of the boat ie the bow then that will face into the wind thus giving a smaller profile for the wind to push against thus slowing the drift down. The profile of the angler remains constant wherever the drogue is attached so it is only the boat profile that can be varied. Or am I talking tosh as normal😉😉
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769
@timjoyceflyfishing-essex6769 3 года назад
@@davidwillacy4796 Ahhh I see yes the boat will drift stern first with the bow to the wind in theory . However because the sides of the boat have a larger surface area they will be affected more by the wind which will cause the boat to skew and crab badly . I wouldn't advise this .
