To test a cage, just put your phone inside and call it. If it rings the cage fails.

Insufficient. An EMP will be much much much much much much stronger than a radio signal.

The refrigerator idea doesn't work because the rubber door seal doesn't keep the integrity of the "total metal shield." You'll need to replace the rubber gasket with a special metalized one. There are some good videos of Faraday boxes using ammo boxes, that show the proper way to do it.

The difference between a Survivalist and a Prepper is that a Prepper prefers to throw money at everything and a Survivalist can achieve the same or similar results without tossing money at everything. What I'm seeing doesn't really fit the definition of a Survivalist. For the fellow Survivalists that wondered here, there are many good videos on how to make a Faraday cage that will work and not cost a crap-ton of money. From a science standpoint I don't see how any of that expensive, overpriced garbage would protect anything from an EMP. This guy even puts his Passport in a Faraday bag? Let me guess, those companies sponsored him. It's like watching QVC for Preppers.

The problem with metallized foil ESD bags is that the thin coating cracks by folding and then becomes useless against electromagnetic radiation or EMP. The fear of touching the metal with antenna or other conductive parts of a device is exaggerated. So long the entire device stays fully inside the faraday cage or bag, the effect will be low. Only if a conductive part (cable, antenna) hangs out, it may get worse than with no shielding (when it acts as 2 sides of a dipol antenna or plate capacitor). Remember people inside a faraday metal mesh suit while a tesla coil fires arcs at them. The suit touches the body but still distributes the electricity well enough to prevent electric shocks. And 500MHz is not enough for an EMP blast. It contains frequencies up to terahertz those crawl through small gaps, however they also arc over by the induced high voltage. So I hope that cookie cans will still do their job during Putin's approaching nuclear war. But shielding will be also vital to survive a digital pandemic (aka rebellion of machines) when strong AI (e.g. resulting in cyberwar sabotage) learns to hack better than humans and so locates and remote-control all digital devices to turn them against humanity.

It would block about 30db worth of signal but you can’t just sit things on the metal.. would have to use foam or cardboard or something to insulate devices from the metal body.. Anything box like made of any type of metal.. alum, stamp steel or anything else is naturally a faraday box.. however the door opening of day a gun safe, ammo box, filing cabinet etc does allow for some transmission.. if storing for long term you can simply use metal tape to seal the seams.. small mounting holes don’t matter much.. If using for items you need to regularly access daily or even weekly.. you can buy blankets and curtains and just throw it over the cabinet and achieve 80+ db reduction.. For the record anything with a 50db reduction or more is considered good enough.. They also sell expensive metal gasket type material to line where doors close.. this won’t work that great on something like a filing cabinet unless it’s a fire rated cabinet that has a liped door closing against a lipped body.. you would then need to remove the rubber gasket clean the edges and apply the metal gasket.. In theory you could simply hit glue some bare wire of any type of metal around the edges and achieve a 50bd reduction In short you want a tight of a metal bow with solid metal to metal contact all around as possible.. if the cabinet has assisted close you could add a steel piece around the door where it won’t close all the way but as long as it’s metal to metal contact as much as possible you’ll be fine..

Get a diesel with manual transition. Pre PD VAG 1.9TDI engines asre the best as they run on any oil, one time my alternator broke and I had to wait a week for a new one to get delivered. I just bump started it and I could drive it just fine as long as I did not drive it at night and I used my GPS to tell speed as none of the instruments worked at all or electronics but diesel engines don't and manual transitions don't need any sort of electric or hydraulic signals. You can shield a car with a Faraday cage and thin sheets of copper and such, but for a survivalist or just a regular person I would recommend everyone gives a turbo diesel stick shift or semi auto a try, they are crazy powerful they are even in sports cars they can last over half a million miles and you can run it on pretty much any clean and filtered oil that's around the same viscosity as diesel so hydokic oil, cooking oil, kerosine with engine oil, engine oil that has been in a centrefuge and filtered with the water removed same with used cooking oil, 2 Stoke oil, tax free rebated farmers diesel. The torque and power is amazing and after a repap it's insane. From a small hatch back to a huge truck you should get it. Never buy a gas truck or van or suv, anyone who uses it for hauling or off road will want a diesel. My favorate truck is the older Toyota Hilux pickups with a turbo diesel engine and a manual transition, it was the most reliable thing I ever owned, apart from oil and filter changes and tyre changes I never had a single problem. That's why they are used as thecnials and mounted with machine guns, they can just take so much abuse and go on. I can't rember what they are called in the US but Toyota gave them a new name calling them the invincible. I know in the US many want to buy American but personally I don't care I buy what works the best. 2nd best would be a land rover defender, turbo diesel. With manual transition. When I lived in the US even in real bad areas with alot of car theft as long as I left nothing in my truck or car and it was stick shift no one gave it a second look. My friend bet me 100 bucks to leave it in a really bad area of the good unlocked for the night I did and it was still fine but the glove box was open lol With stick you save fuel, it's cheaper than the same with an auto and they never Reay break and you only need to change the oil every 5 years and clutch every 50,000+ and it's easy. Also you can use it to engine break and select a gear for the best weather type. In upstate NY people had to pay 10 to 20 bucks to have the snow around their cars shoved and it was nearly up to my balls. Meanwhile in my diesel stifkshift pop in in 3rd and all good even with just multi season tyres and no chains.

good video. on the burner phone though, if everybody is affected by an EMP attack, the you would have a functional phone, but most people would not have one anymore, so the purpose is a bit questionable.

There are uses for smart phones post EMP if you have a functioning HAM radio. There are programs that can run to send pictures or CW or other methods of communications such that you don't have to put your voice over the air.

I don't know if it would protect from an emp from a high altitude nuke or negukar nuke. The difference is a high altitude nukes does no damage apart from the crazy high emp and I mean no blast or fallout or enough radiation to hurt but it has to be high enough.

The first act of a beginning nuclear war is executing the shootingstar-night protocol, i.e. wiping all satellites out of the earth orbit by making some collide, turning into a chain reaction forming tons of shrapnel those destroy all remaining satellites. And of course an NEMP attack (stratosphere nuke) is used to eliminate them and all unprotected electronics. Most EMP sensitive is still everything connected to cables or antennas, so as a first step keep your spare devices disconnected. For cheap storage of data media (USB sticks, portable harddrives etc.) use cookie cans to prevent eradicating the mankind's world knowledge after data clouds are toast.
