Always amazes me the quality of your work. Just as a matter of interest, why cycloidal gears and not involute? I will have to back and see how you made the cutter.
@woody442
@woody442 8 месяцев назад
It is very challenging to accurately manufacture a true involute teeth profile and it is really only needed in high load/high rpm situations. Cycloidal is an approximation that works perfectly fine in most cases.

Involute teeth only mesh with other involute teeth, cycloidal teeth mesh with other things including cylindrical pins. It is also a traditional clockmakers gear, so there is probably a stylistic reason to use it here.

one of the other reasons cyloidal gears were used in horology is due to the old way of cutting gears where slots would be cut either with a file or with a basic slot cuter and then the tips rounded off usually by hand but later with a topping tool. you can also have much smaller number of teeth ( clock pinions are often only 6 or 7 leaves meshing with 80+ teeth) the geometry doesnt work for cylcoidal gears with those numbers, and also arguably there is less friction as there are less teeth touching at any point, i think with involute there will always be 3 teeth in contact but thats reasonably debatable. also at this point clock gears are a proven technology with little wear after 400 years if kept in good condition. i think theres also something to be said for the aesthetic also. here is a good video of early gear making ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iHwo_xadeWk.html

Your videos are always beautifully composed. You ever consider uploading in 4k?

I always wondered, could a broaching method followed with a file create teeth like on the antikythera device? A bit like a shaper, but less heavy duty.

I've been told that 1:15 represents what's known in some circles as 'the money shot'. I, of course, have absolutely no idea what that means. 🤭

Originally a broad term used generally in film-making, the "money shot" was simply the scene that cost the most money to produce. Hope this helps.

Is there a purpose for the dykem if you're not actually using it for layout?
@PeregrineBF
@PeregrineBF 8 месяцев назад
He used it to set the cutter depth. By cutting two adjacent teeth alternately at deeper & deeper depths until the dykem just barely disappeared he got the peak of the tooth to exactly the right height. Of course the rest of the dykem on the remainder of the wheel wasn't needed, but it's easier to apply it by just spinning the work under the brush, & it does make the video look cool when it's all gone at the end.

How do you make the measurements to ensure everything will fit properly?
@nolansykinsley3734
@nolansykinsley3734 8 месяцев назад
Everything is pre-planned but the gearwork always has a little room for adjustment. He has a special jig he puts the gears on to get their spacing right, and it has points so he can transfer the exact locations needed to the workpiece for final placement.
@EleanorPeterson
@EleanorPeterson 8 месяцев назад
Also: the actual tooth spacing around the circumference is determined by a rather clever lathe attachment capable of plotting and reproducing rotational/angular movements to a very fine degree. You choose the number of teeth you want (one, three, seven, eighty-six, two-hundred and seventeen, whatever) and the device will divide up the workpiece for you. It will then turn the blank with extreme accuracy, having worked out beforehand the precise start/stop, beginning/end positions for however many teeth the job requires. It's possible to do it all by eye and by hand, using skill and trial and error (Chris is capable of doing all kinds of wheel divisions sans machine and with extraordinary accuracy, so he's got nothing to prove by doing things the hard way), but sometimes it's nice to sit back and let a machine do the maths!😁
