By mixing a slow shutter speed with a flash, you can create interesting portraits in the studio. In this episode, Mark Wallace explains how to “drag the shutter” to expose ambient light while using rear curtain sync to freeze motion - all at the same time. Mark creates interesting portraits by blurring his LED Pavotubes with a slow shutter and freezing his model with a Speedlight.

4:23, id put a blue gel on teresas flash light and then use a black board with small leds poking through, maybe christmas lights as a starry night background and swirl them around. try and recreate van goghs starry night with colors leds in the background! :O

Please explain to me why Theresa was frozen by The Flash since you were at 4 seconds she wasn't in complete darkness during that time because enough light should have come in to expose her in low-light. So was the flash strong enough for the camera to ignore the rest of where the light could have been coming off of her? I'm not explaining it very well but you know saying.

pause it at 3:20. Look and you'll see there is a little ghosting around her face. He did get some image from the ambient light. Ideally you want to find a better balance of exposing for the flash with the ambient light if you are shooting a subject that might move a little. Like she did here. That way the any ghosting will be dark enough that you won't notice it. Or if you can, isolate the subject away from what is lighting the background so that the subject is more of a silhouette to the background light.

don't use a flash for light painting, it gives you more work during editing. Instead use a white portrait light or flash light to paint your subject for a few seconds then use color light tubes or whatever you are using to paint the background. It also helps if the person doing the light painting is wearing all black.

The recommendation is to use dark/black clothes to avoid this and then photoshop if any

@@moisesgomez1767 Yes Olympus cameras have a Live Composite function which makes this style easier to do but even they recommend wearing black clothing when doing light painting which this video is kind of an offshoot of

Idea has been done many times before, however next time wear something completely black, cover your hands and face and redo it, easier to remove the person from the picture.

This is called light painting. There is actually an easier way to do this without a flash. Iso 100, bulb mode so you will need a shutter release remote. The apture differs which can be played with. I would start with 10. You will need something to light the model like a portrait light. Open the shutter and start moving the lights around. The model does need to stay still. When done, close the shutter. It's that simple. There are lots of how to videos on light painting

Mark should be wearing black so we can't see him behind Teresa. Some shots look like she has a third leg. This crossed my mind near the beginning of the video and I thought surely Adorama will have Mark change into all black clothing. Oh well. I still enjoyed the video.

You have to wear black clothes, with black gloves and black hat in order not to be in the pictures. It is a good try but a bad example how to do light painting right.
