I worked for zales for 3 years and managed one of their stores that closed. When it closed, there was a polishing machine just like yours except it was two sided. I left it in someone's garage and they chucked it out. Waaaa! That was like 40 years ago, but I still regret losing it.

I place a piece of low pile carpet under the buffing wheel. It does collect some of the dust and buff material but more importantly if you do catch a piece in the buffing wheel, the carpet will reduce damage to the piece and slow it down.

If you do more than 1 hour of polishing, you must get a better machine. I had this one 25 years ago. It was to tight to work on. The dust was all over the shop. If you can afford, buy a free standing 0.5 hp motor and a dust collection hood and a 0.5 dust collector. All from ARBE or other manufacturer. I personally had the ARBE. Never had problems and still working. The real purpose for a good dust collector is to collect the precious metals and sell it at the end of the year. Professional shops keep a separate room for polishing to keep the dust contamination low. Like you mentioned be very careful not to loose your fingers or your vision. Stay safe.

I have this motor and you're absolutely right. The dust "collection" is more like dust "direction" it just blows about 60% of it out the side vent and deposits another 30% around the motor, with 10% settling on everything in the shop.

Thanks for the demo. After seeing this in action, it looks like half of the filter is blocked by the cardboard that surrounds the it. You can see the debris sitting on the surface, stuck at the bottom. That doesn’t seem right.

Yeah it does that, I have taken it out a few times and cleaned it. It could have had a bit of a better design to be honest.

One thing I noticed.... that ARBE polisher has a VERY small area where the dust enters the filter behind the buffing area, (about 2" x 4"). Why didn't they just make a small filter to fit that area??? What is all the rest of the filter doing?? lol....
