Using CLEAR at the Airport to Skip the TSA Security Line - Is it Worth It?

We recently did a free trial of CLEAR at the airport, due to a slow TSA line. I extended my free trial and did this video review for my second time using it. I discuss the pros and cons of it, so hopefully my practical, real-use examples can help you determine whether it is right for you. Filmed on April 28, 2023, at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

I have both clear and TSA pre-check. I find it convenient to have both.

Thank you for the video. I have been at Cleveland Hopkins Airport many times. I'm not sure if it was mentioned and you may already know that TSA PreCheck allows you to keep your shoes on and keep your electronics inside of your carry-on bag when you go through security. You also walk through the metal detector instead of the millimeter wave body scanner. So the Clear/PreCheck combination works well together.

Chris, i got precheck and it has been well worth it. $85 for five years, took about 6 weeks to two months to get. It has saved me several times in Phoenix which is large and crazy busy whenever I go through. You go through regular security but dont have to take off your shoes or take out your liquids bag. I love it!

I'm contemplating it, lol. When I was at Salt Lake Airport, they also had a specific line for people who had BOTH Pre-Check and CLEAR.

I prefer tsa pre check

/CLEAR lets you cut to the front of the TSA precheck *line*. I've been at airports where the precheck line is as long as the regular one, 30 minutes wait!

Precheck let's you keep your shoes belt and jacket on

@@Truckingman Right, but CLEAR doesn't replace precheck, man. It adds to it. If you have precheck and clear, you go to the front of the precheck line and keep your shoes and belt on and your laptop closed. I've been in precheck lines that are 30 minutes+. Clear gets you past the lines and straight to security.

Yes, I've heard pros and cons to both -- sometimes it is airport- or time-dependent, with different line lengths.

I might have missed it... have you applied for Precheck? I fly through CLE a few times a year and rarely have a long line for Precheck, even during the morning rush. Well worth it at that airport.

I briefly mentioned that Precheck is an alternative, but that I haven't done it yet. I should try applying for that, since when I fly, I mostly fly solo.

@@PokoTraveler Yeah it's quick and easy to apply and worth the time to get an appointment. It works out to less than $20 a year. So worth it. Also if you do travel with someone and they're on your same reservation, often they'll get access to it as well.
@PokoTraveler

@@matthaze Oh, interesting; one of the reasons I didn't apply years ago was that I thought I'd be traveling more often with someone else, but that they wouldn't have Precheck (so my thought was that I didn't want to get it if we were going to be in separate TSA lines).

@@PokoTraveler Gotcha! When I travel with my mom and we're on the same res, she gets the check mark as well. It's not guaranteed but more times than not it happens. Do it!

@@matthaze true! My sister was on my reservation once but didn't have it. When we checked in she got it so we both were good for precheck.

Don't get bamboozled by Clear at the airport. I was bamboozled at the Denver airport by mistakenly entering the clear line instead of the TSA line, well before I knew what was happening had been moved to the Clear sign up line and I was signed up, asked for my cc which I was promised would not be charged until after the trial period. Well needless to say, I was charged before I arrived at my destination. I have called, used their chat and almost a month later I am still jumping through hoops with no end in sight. I guess the AG and BBB which they have a negative rating on is the only solution.

Sorry to hear that you had that experience. In my case, the advertised offer held true; I wasn't charged and cancelled before my trial ended.

Covid-we are a broken nation. Sorry, not trying to muck up your positivity-merely answering your questioning observation. Half the workforce can’t come back and miss it everyday and the other half is questioning what else is there.

Yes, it's a tough thing to solve, as it seems like even higher wages across jobs haven't really attracted the same job demand as it used to. One thing I forgot to mention is that this is the South checkpoint at Hopkins that I've been going to. There is also a North checkpoint that I haven't gone to since probably 2018 or 2019. Last month, someone working at Hopkins yelled out, "North Checkpoint is open and only has a 5-minute wait." And after I passed through TSA yesterday, I heard over the PA system, "North Checkpoint is also open with only a 5-minute wait." That probably was true for Hopkins' case, but I remember last year, I did it at the Denver Airport -- I was at my usual checkpoint (the main one), and a worker said, "There is no wait at the upstairs level check-in." I wasn't in a rush that day, but I figured, "Oh, I'll try it." I went upstairs and it was way damn longer, lol, it would've been quicker if I stayed at the original one.

I’m afraid as a young person you are going to have to experience all the rough water and unknown ripples generated by Covid for years to come. So happy to see that you are doing it with class and grace. I recently watched your CSU video and thought it was truly lovely that you shared the human, personal tidbit that your mom and dad met there. It reminded me of Neil Sean’s videos. He is my favorite British Blogger-I think he’s a blogger-he makes videos lol Thank you for creating and sharing your travels
