last time I watched the video I bought some of these thinking they'd come in handy ... just making a bag and I thought I'd give them a go but couldn't remember how they worked so I googled conway buckle and the video popped back up ... then I remembered why I'd bought them in the first place! I'll get there in the end ... 😬
Of course we Mailbag Freaks love Conway Buckles! Lovely low profile, fewer holes to punch, no long bits of unused leather flapping about, both ends of the shoulder strap get a matching look and they just look the part. An essential component to any Mailbag!
Thank you Harry. I love waching your videos. You seem a very kind and peaceful man. I just got a shipment of conway buckles in for making some WW2 M3 tanker shoulder holsters and got a little confused. This video unconfused me. :)
The design was patented by Frederick Conway of Buffalo, NY, in 1882 or there abouts for horse harness. I find they excel on shoulder straps, but also use for straps on bags because they are slightly quicker to release than tongue buckles, although less secure. They are slightly less bulky too. Thanks for your videos.
You had a go at making your own buckles? I did cast a couple as replacements could not be found. A simple and cast in brass gave pleasing results. Did require quite a lot of finessing but end result was pleasing.
They look great for bags, could be used for waistbelts as well. Sp you can change the leather belt to jatch your shoes but keep and use the same buckle. I found they were in use inn1914 by the UK cavalry
Josh Luijsterburg Hi Josh..interesting and viewer Christine has messaged me to say: I came across a forum where they were discussing the Conway buckle and thought it may be of interest to you, there is a link to a patent for a buckle which sounds convincing as its named after the fellow himself. www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=24865.0
Good video Harry, as usual. I’ve been reading about leather work and I’m looking to get into it but there seems to be an absolute plethora of tools that are supposedly needed. If you had to start again, what tools would be your absolute essentials for starting?
Hi Harry, again great video. It might be a bit off topic but i would really like to hear your opinion abour using invisible magnetic snaps in leatherware. I haven't found any info or videos online. I hope you can enlighten us. Thanks.
Güray Yüce Hi Guray...they are very useful...best to get the slimmer ones if you don't want them to show...and to double back them, or similar, if using veg tan leather otherwise they will become very obvious under the leather as it patinates
Hi Harry, thanks a lot for the tip. I will give it try. I will most likely be using a chrome tan leather since i am quite the beginner and i need more experience before starting with more costly projects. I've learned a lot from your videos already. Best.
Hi Harry, can I ask a question about sourcing leather. I ask because I have just received 10 m of leather 3 mm cord from an eBay seller and found it to be of an appalling quality. Can you point me toward some reliable retailers of quality material?
Philip Green Hello Philip...I am going to be doing some films using the fantastic Sedgewick leather which is super quality...I am being sponsored by them.
your adjustment didn't make the strap shorter or longer Harry... surly you need to pull the underneath (end piece) through to make it longer or shorter... or is it me!! regards Mark.
Hi Mark - there is a longer length of double strap after my adjustment so it is shorter. Perhapd try it with a tape measure, pretending its a conway strap to see what I mean. Rgds Harry
