Michelle Barns it actually does, just like bycicle roads. The problem is however that we are not just stupid ai, so we do want an foot/bike path that feels safe an looks nice (not right along a highway)
It does in larger cities when you have trains so people can go further. Chicago is like this every day: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PG74Ir7D8zM.html can't imagine what the roads would be like if all those people took cars/cabs. I've ridden my bike 40 miles from the south side of the city to the north because of the lake shore path, if I had to ride on the street I wouldn't have done it.
In Hong Kong, we do build extremely long footbridges on top of busy roads. At least you can remove traffic lights for pedestrian www.mkfs-hyd.hk/hyd.php?page=intro&meid=27712
It works in many, many cities. I was living in Edinburgh and I did not need a car when I was living there. There's enough walking paths every where that I could walk within the city. Most people are happy to walk for an hour or so. Beyond that is the real problem.
You know when people ask why Biffa starts with the simple stuff, like making sure roundabouts have their Traffic Manager set up properly? THIS. THIS IS WHY. Ten minutes of messing with TM in roundabouts followed by throwing down a few walking paths, and not only is everything mostly fixed, but it also becomes vastly easier to find the spots that actually do need something more in-depth.
Always look for the simplest stuff first. The traffic scenario that comes with Mass Transit has a missing exit ramp that causes a huge portion of the external traffic to have to loop through an exit to another highway, then directly off a ramp to a city street, through a light, to cross over and get back on going the other way. A single ramp makes a massive difference in the traffic.
The train despawning thing at the edge of the map has been a disaster for basically the entire game's release so far. It's mostly due to weird slow despawning rate and trains trying to spawn in at the same place. You can try forcing trains to come in one direction and exit another, but sometimes there's still an issue with them not disappearing fast enough, and it's essentially unfixable.
@ In real life when they have that many trains using a particular line in each direction they tend to add more tracks in each direction as well as separate passenger and freight lines in cities. That also add rail yards simply to put the trains somewhere amongst other things.
The problem is only with passenger trains. Each outside connection acts like it's own station and the trains need to wait for each other to load/unload, which takes some time. This can be amplified if node where they do track changes is closer to the edge of the map than the length of a train(which sometimes happens) I did manage to fix it but you need the unlimited outside connections mod, the 81 squares mod and the move it mod. What you can do then is first buy the squares all the way to the edge of the map. Next you draw multiple outside connections close to each other(basically build the line over the edge of the map, the game does the rest) and that acts like a multi-platform station. Additionally you can separate your cargo lines from the passenger lines completely, which I eventually ended up doing to smooth down you trafic even more. There's also a mod that allows you to disable inter city trains for some stations, I don't know which one that is, but I use that too and usually allow inter city trains at one or two hub stations in my city But usually train trafic boils down to node placement so if you really want to solve it you kind of need the move it mod.
@ i found two videos: in the first one for a city of 250k there was at least 40 cargo station, another with five cargo station in the same place... i dont know how is that possible without clogging everithing
I used a realistic walking speed mod and that turned out to be a reason why my rails clogged up. Unfortunately the public transport boarding time is influenced by the walking speed. So at stations with a lot of cims boarding my public transport had boarding times up to 1500% and clogged up all my railways even outside of the city boarders.

@@antro4458 Having that many cargo stations is pretty much guaranteed to clog up your network. If you have too many, the stations start spawning deformed/short trains, less carriages. I saw some with no carriages at all, just the engine. lololol You have to get everything perfectly balanced. Both people and cargo transports work identically, if you don't produce enough you'll get lorries/cars clogging up your roads, and if you produce too many you'll get trains clogging up your rail system. Balance is what is needed. :D
Biffa - I am so glad I came across you videos! I love them. Are you going to be doing any more series where you are building cities? I really enjoyed them!
There! I enabled you another sip of tea :D That "train thing" at 13:02 happened to me as well. That outside connection acts like a train station(for some reason), makes trains (especially passenger ones) change lanes and drop/pick up passengers. Since that outside connection is too short for any train, those junctions get blocked. This gets resolved with despawning, but since you have it turned off, you get a nice conga line of trains. I'm still trying to figure it out. It might be the bug with the game itself, mod incompatibility,... Long story short, try deleting the connection and make it again with unlimited outside connections and maybe include cross the line mod. I know I'm a bit late to the show, but useful info is never a bad thing ;)
Update on the train issue: apparently, one of the easiest solutions is to use MoveIt mod and move the junction away from the exit/entrance far enough so you can fit a train. Same thing like we have in each train station. But I'm guessing this useful advice will get buried under sea of other comments :)
@@vladimirmijatovic4171 Not too buried, thankfully. I've been seeing the same problem lately, and so spotting your comment while watching old videos has been very helpful. Yeah, I think the key is to move the last pair of railway nodes far enough apart, so that even the largest trains fit entirely within that segment.
The only asymmetrical road in the unmodded game is the 2/1 three lane road, which is from the Mass Transit DLC, all the larger asymmetrical roads are mods.
Biffa- You have made me a traffic pro! I now freak out if traffic in my city drops below 80%, and I find myself saying "you pick your lane" and "horky borky lane switching" as I drive down the real Interstate.
Idk why I love these videos so much 😂 I've never even played this game but listening to your voice and watching you fix the cities is so relaxing for me 🙂 Thanks for making these!
Trains often go wrong because a train from Outside is spawning on the exittrack. - workarounds include replacing a part of the track with oneway tracks in both directions. Better I find it is to make a oneway sidetrack to the Outside just next to the Intercity Connection. Just make i long enough to fit a few trains. Then use TM:PE to force trains going out to use the sidetrack.
@@PerfectAlibi1 I suppose they should. But what happens is that the one on the Exit line just sits there bloicking the exit, and on the Entry line trains keep appearing. In some cases the train on the Exit line just keeps running on the wrong side of the track and the meets onkomming trafik and everything stops again.
Thank you 🙌🏻 I started using the roundabout builder and assumed it was placing the give way signs. I just figured it out after sending over the city. Much appreciated
That mod will place all the signs if set up correctly, actually I think it does to it by default, apart from the one change I make to the TMPE opion which I've shown before :-)
Biffa Plays Indie Games yea I had it turned off. I had a “ooohhh” moment when I went into the tool. Again thank you for the fix. Can not wait for more videos.
This is so wonderful to see fixes. IT's hilarious that people who don't play this game just watch for the entertainment/ relaxing value. I do love these. It helps me fix my traffic for sure. I downloaded an asset that is a footpath across 4 & 6-lane roadways. I use it pretty often for long roads and tourist spots nearby &/or transport stops... but I usually forget to path across areas like you did with industrial to residential. That was a good tip.
people still do the give way signs and stuff like that wrong.... like how do they know to contact you, they clearly never saw a video of yours..... its something everyone can at least do before sending it to you i'd say.
I honestly don't understand how they do this... They have rather tiny cities and still manage to get them crowded. I don't even have roundabouts and mine still do alright...
I don't get it either. I don't even play this game (it's just sooo relaxing to watch Biffa fix cities) and even I know that you have to set up the give way signs properly, and how you set up roundabouts instead of messed up junctions.
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines rhe fact you saw and responded to a random comment from a viewer so fast im not even half way through the video yet and its done is honestly pretty impressive in itself.. gotta respect someone who actually pays attention to their community that well to stay on top of things, keep up the good work man, awesome job on all parts
OMG, I’m in love with this channel. I came across one of Biffa’s videos in my feed yesterday and i’m hooked!! I’m now watching video after video, and I’ve never played or seen this game before in my life. I love his personality in his voiceover!! OMG!!! Great content!! Subscribed!!!
I've been binging your more recent videos, I can't imagine how much more time was spent on this before you got the tools that automatically fixed roundabouts and made walking paths around them.
I found your channel a couple of months ago and watched every video I could. I finally got the game about a week ago. I'm trying to do all of the things you've demonstrated but every time I fix one junction two more go gridlock. I fix one of those and the original and two other flip out. I may be sending you my city soon.
Anil Tarafder this is why I’m now going back through his old playlists. My current favourite is Frost-Tea City, but the real time mod build has some great challenges :)
Love your videos Biffa, I find them very therapeutic and relaxing and also makes me want to play the game and experiment with things you teach in these videos. Keep up the awesomeness!
Thanks for the fun Biffa. Check 21:56 you made a line mathematics error. from the left to the right: you have 3 lanes, 1 going left, 2 straight on and you have one from the right coming in but only 2 lanes going off. If it is busy that will be a mess! You used asymmetric road 3/2 and could have used a 3/3 road :)
What I like most about these videos is Biffa commentary and seeing all these cities that people have made. Would be cool to have some beautify my city videos.
21:52 Biff: "So you've got a turning lane for up there and 2 for straight on". Car on screen: I don't care about your turning lane *uses turning lane to drive straight on"
I wonder if there's a "Car Destruct" mod - instead of simply de-spawning, cars explode if they get stopped for too long... (random thought brought to you courtesy of the car disappearing at 14:40)
17:26 the yellow car coming on to the roundabout from the right, chose the left lane, went around the roundabout, twice to go straight on! gave me a laugh.
Everytime someone asks me for help because of their traffic it goes like this: "Help my city is in gridlock?" "Do you have pedestrian paths plastered everywhere?" "No......"
I had the issue with the trains a few times as well. It's because every outside connection is essentially a train station. Trains spawn and despawn there and for some reason you sometimes get inbound trains on both tracks at which point everything locks up. Took a few mods to fix (like move it, the ones that let you build outside city borders, oneway tracks and TMPE)
I now understand why biffa likes roundabouts and hates traffic lights... I never knew that right on red, was not a legal thing in Europe... so roundabouts do the same thing...keeps traffic moving...Me i will still use traffic lights, with right on red in my cities. A whole lot less setup required to, so that it works correctly.
I can't stand the roundabouts when 70% of the offending traffic is trying to go the same direction, whether it's right or left or straight. Any time you have to bypass the roundabout because it's flooded with people trying to turn left, or go straight or go right, just upgrade it to something that lets them do that without stopping everyone else. Right- on- red lets everyone turn right at any safe opportunity without clogging up the intersection.
Just a geeky idea. Sorry in advance for backseating you may ignore of course. When you put walking overpasses on roundabouts (8:08,) I think there might be way to do it such that it's more efficient to walk. If someone walking wants to make a 90 degree turn at the roundabout intersection, they can already do it without the overpass (ideally,) so you might want your overpasses to be more cross shaped, so people can go straight at the roundabout. ie. overpasses that take the pedestrian into the middle of the roundabout. They still wouldn't have to cross the street with this configuration, for a 90 degree turn, though the 90 degree turn would be a slightly less efficient if they do have to cross. I'm not sure if it's doable neatly in the game, to meet in the middle of the roundabout. At 9:06, the group of people walking on the right side of the roundabout are going from the east side to the west side, and they have to walk all the way around when with a different design they could go straight, and I believe it would also be cheaper. Same with the dumbbell roundabout - would love to go through the middle of that as a pedestrian (shorter distance.) Loved the video.
The trains backing up exiting the map can be fixed using the lane connecter - don't allow them to switch tracks when leaving the map. I guess you have to buy all land tiles for this to work (i did) A huge issue on this map was the south-west industry area which wasn't connected to a highway (so the trucks went through mutliple roundabouts) and had no dedicated cargo station - the station used was two roundabounts away (the ones you turned into a dumbbell) and was used by the southeast industry area as well. I endet up putting up 2 cargo stations for the southwest industry area (because one was overwhelmed) and another one for the southeast one. I exchanged the T-Highway-Intersection northeast of the southwest industry area with a 4-Way-Intercetion and gave the industry area highway-access (plus sliplanes in the tunnel wast of the intersection. Reaching 81 % just by optimizing the intersections is really impressive.
I so gloriously suck at games like this, but watching your videos makes me want to get this JUST to download games and see if I can fix them up and improve them. Keep up the awesome videos, it’s great content when it makes me want a game that I KNOW I would be horrible at. Lol
1:17 The truth is the oposite. More trafic is able to enter= the roundabout/intersection can deal with bigger and more irregular traffic. The way Biffa sets it is to clear the roundabout but it takes like 10 seconds so you can switch junction restrictions back on. Don't forget to find the problem point before changing stuff on roundabouts.
Ssar1702 Maybe when you have a single primary source of traffic but in the example at 1:17 you have big traffic queues coming from 3 sides crossing over and using the same lanes so when they all enter the junctions they lock up without people able to exit
@Biffa ... I've never seen you do this, so I don't know if you are aware of it, but when using the lane connector tool, you know how if you hold Shift + S it sets all the lanes at that node to no lane switching? On a multi-lane 2 way, did you know that, while still holding Shift, if you press S again, and again, it toggles no lane switching between either side of the street?
You should be able to have underground roads linking to underground car parks and keep the surface for people and non-polluting quiet public transport.

WOW another fantastic fix mate! always makes me smile to see you turn a cities traffic around 100%
Sorry in advance, this might be a stupid question. At 17:23, could you make the 4 lane highway merge into a 2 lane highway? Then, change the roundabout into a 1 lane highway too? If that works how I'm thinking, it would make it more efficient and cause and less confusion. I purchased the game recently but the semester just started so I haven't had time to play it and figure it out yet
Hi Biffa! I’ve got a quick question. Is there an ideal number of lanes to diameter of a roundabout ratio? I’m thoroughly enjoying watching your channel. It’s currently my most watched channel. You’re entertaining, insightful, and you have improved my own cities just by watching your channel. I love it!!
Funny how future Biffa would fix this Biffa's fixes. Lane mathematics. Fewer lanes. Fewer changes to roundabouts. Leaving more of what is already there.
I had the same issue on the same map with the same exit point. It seems it has something to do with the additional trains from workshop. I fixed it by deselecting all these trains in the content manager. Then I played a couple of minutes only with the vanilla trains. Or you could use the mod Vehicle Selector (at least I guess it is this one), click on a train station and highlight only the vanilla trains. All other trains sent by this station will be removed and the exit point should be ok again.
Would you recommend creating raised paths around roundabouts on all roundabouts you create? Rather than creating them and having the problem encountered here further down the line?
Biffa, the thing with the trains is a map bug. sometimes after loading the map, the node where the trains spawn/despawn has its direction of travel flipped. Which then causes the queue.
I had a block up of trains like that out to the edge of the map on one of my cities. I ended up using MoveIt to stretch the map edge station longer so trains would fit into it and despawn like they're supposed to.
I had the same train problem with them not exiting the map. I'm on PS4 with 180k population. I have a good amount of industry, I do have the Industries dlc, but 95% of my industry is pre-dlc zoned. With the Industries dlc came the Cargo Airport Hub, I placed 3 of them around my industry areas and it SOLVED my problem. No more trains backed up anywhere.
I understand the basic give-way vs. right-of-way controls on roundabouts, but could you spend a minute explaining the other TMPE control you use? When checking a roundabout, you check the aforementioned give-way things first, then you check something else (while saying "you can go thru..." several times) -- it's this second set of controls I don't understand. What does it do, and why do you select one or the other setting? thanks...love your stuff!
It either allows or stops cars entering a blocked junction. When traffic is rammed you need cars that enter the roundabout to NOT enter the blocked junction, other wise is just all not going to move 👍
That train thing is the reason why I always prefer to setup 3 sets of tracks: - city trains. Not shared with any other trains, used purely for own train lines (that includes also stations and/or station tracks) - cargo train tracks. Used only by cargo trains. - passenger trains to other cities With the last two types joining tracks only at the very borders of the city (so cargo trains can still leave and enter the city while cargo traffic generated while transporting cargo from one part of the city to another does not impact anything else really). It surely uses more space but it makes trains probably the fastest transportation way within the city.
First images of the city, first thoughts : "Wow nice, city, have nice districts, roundab... why people are still using Cloverleafs ?!" xD The first notes of the music you used for the "timelapse" of the roundabout check and fix made me thought it was a remix of "Auld Lang Syne", I was like : "Ok, he's gone" xD For the trains, did you try deleting the last train ? Maybe it crashed and couldn't leave the map, happened to me once. 15:37 Yes Biffa, you rock ! I had a sound'gasm xD 22:00 Why a turning lane Oo, it's a slip lane to avoid the roundabout for the coming ones
You could upgrade even more. Make it so that 1/4 turn is outside 1/2 is middle lane. 3/4 is inside line. They pick there line on entree and after 1/4 of the roundabout all traffic is forced one lane to the outside.
Randomly clicked on this and I was like hey, I recognise this voice, sounds like pythonGB, then I heard cuppatea and I thought “wow I had no clue biffa plays this now” nice series x
