What are these things and why is everyone using them? Watch in 1080p
Sound examples:
1:30 - Gentle mute - Headstock
1:55 - Aggressive mute - 4th fret
2:22 - Old School - Under the Bridge Mute
'Fretwraps' and similar mutes have become a mainstay of professional Bass players in need of changeable muting solutions on the go. Whether it's live, recording or using with pedals, this method of tone control has become extremely popular. Find out why in this video. Whilst it's true they shouldn't be used in place of proper muting techniques, they do offer a quick solution to drastically change or improve the 'overtone' and sound of your instrument.

I hadn’t thought of using it as a mute. Thanks!

It's definitely not cheating There is a real snobbery about so called cheating in music but it's all rubbish, if it works & sounds good then that's all that matters

You mentioned Duck Dunn and Jamerson. I'll add Carol Kaye who used one all the time.

Excellent video ! Just what I was looking for. I was playing a gig at my church tonight and need a mute on one song. I'd prefer doing the bridge mute, but now from your video I see I can do both bridge and nut methods. By the way, I once saw Victor Wooten use a mute. Like you said, if it's being used by the top players in the world, it's not "a cheat". Thank you!

When you put it next to the bridge, strings dont get dampened evenly. Top and bottom strings get dampened much more than the others

A bridge foam mute like those classic session players you mention does not have the same function as a fretwrap at the nut, just sayin.

Of course not, but it's a great way to emulate the sound of those old basses on a budget for those who want to experiment with old school tone 😉

Some of them look cool like the metallic looking ones, but that's about if for me, I have no use for it for the music I play.

These only mute the open stings if used at the nut so what’s the point of comparing the fret warp to a foam mute under the bridge. Not the same effect at all.
