Using FrSky ETHOS with RC Flight Simulators

In this video, we look at how to use your ETHOS transmitter. Here I set up my X20S on Wings. The set up within the actual flight simulator may vary, but should be pretty similar. This should work with popular RC flight simulators like RealFlight, AeroFly, and PicaSim. The transmitter will work with dongle flight simulators. Just set the transmitter up like a trainer slave radio.

In Wings, you can press the C button on your keyboard to change the camera between LOS, FPV and Chase camera.

Darren Please make a video about How to setup Thrust Reversing on ESCs like HOBBYWING esc on ETHOS radio... Please, this is very useful function to have like an airbrake on edf when landing. Much appreciated.

To be honest, the setup of this is dependent on the ESC. I don’t have any thrust reversing or 3D ESCs. The ESC manual should show how to set up the reverse. I’ve never done this, but would imagine there will be a switch, and possibly a second PWM cable to the ESC? If you know the model of the ESC, maybe I could download a manual and take a look?

Cool. Always good to have more options. Personally, I prefer the cable, as it charges the transmitter as I’m using the sim. But I can definitely see the appeal of no cables.

windows things my taranis lite throttle joysick is the elev/ail joystick. I've got the model setup AETR

That sounds odd. My model is set up as AETR too. To be honest, it doesn’t really matter what Windows thinks is going on. In the flight sim, you will configure the controller anyway.

Hey Darren...I thought I could catch you on a newer vid... Any know issues connecting a FrSky R9 SX and Qx7 tran (ACCESS) on iNAV with Matek H743 Wing V3 ?

Nope. It will just be using F.Port (ideally) or SBUS with SmartPort for telemetry. In the receiver options, just set one of the PWM ports to use SPort. Then set the telemetry type to FPORT. Connect that PWM port to a Tx, power and ground on the flight controller. In INAV set the Serial RX port. Then on the receiver page, set the protocol to FPORT. If it doesn’t work, try the inverted option. Though it shouldn’t need that.

@@MrD Thanks for the tip. I worked on it till 02:35 this am... it would not work.. then (being an oldie in serial comm from the IBM 360 days) I thought this must be bi-directionsl ! I changed the Serial Half Duplex (setting in RECEIVER) and bingo! those bars-were-a-movin' on the iNAV screen.

where did you get that driver? mine says frsky taranis joystick ms flight sim doesn't seem to recognize the buttons even tho windows does..hmmm

I didn’t download a driver at all. I just plugged it in and Windows had the correct driver.

hi. is bettyer to use a trainer for simulator or not? I mean the inside electronic on the radio is switch off or not in your case? thanks

I have not set up the radio as a trainer. It is used as a joystick.

Use it as a joystick as in the video. Setting the radio up as a trainer is to allow some else to be able to control your radio when a switch is operated.

@@MrD got it. I tought there was some special mode to deactivate the unnecessary lectronic inside the rc to preserve it. I was wrong

I have a dongle that uses the trainer port to control Phoenix sym. Any idea how to use it with ethos? On opentx my radio was set as trainer but now it doesn’t work

It should still work via the cable trainer output. It’s been a while since I set that up. But I believe you will need to set your transmitter up as a cabled slave. Failing that. There is software to fake the dongle, which should allow you to use the transmitter over USB as a joystick. www.rc-thoughts.com/phoenix-sim/

hi Daren I got as far as 2-00 into this explanation and there I had to stop just do not understand how you get channels 5678 I can find no explanation about this sorry if it should be obvious.My only excuse is I am 74 and I dont mind asking silly questions.

Hi Phil. For the extra channels, you need to add the mixes on the transmitter, assign switches to them, and then assign the output channels. I just add a free mix to do this.

Hi and thanks for your helpful videos, I managed to figure out how to setup switches, I have an Issue with PhoenixiRC under Game controllers on Win11 everything works including switches for flaps and retracts but when I go into PhoenixiRC and do a calibration it doe's not recognize the switches at all, everything else works funny thing is that everything worked fine before I updated the firmware on the radio. any idea of what I'm doing wrong? Cheers.
