The big problem with these dumb plans people use to radically reduce a factory load is that they often end up making a load that can act as a bore obstruction. With the powder change reduced so much there can be insufficient powder density for the primer to ignite the powder instantly, instead the force of the primer ends up blowing the bullet out of the case into the barrel where it stops when it hits the rifling. The smouldering powder then ignites but there is now a bullet stuck in the throat causing pressure to soar with resulting damage to the case and or rifle.

I ran out of Trail Boss the other day only to discover it’s no longer available(that’s what one gets when one buys powder 10 at a time!)so I have a Vetterli 1880/87/15 carbine, so powder alternatives? I have seen on cast boolits site use a 60% load(of recommended starting load), then ofcoarse black powder(I use Triple 7) with the Lee 6.5 cruise missle sized to .268. So would you have a recommendation for powder type& gns you use for smokeless, then perhaps a black powder/Triple 7 load (I’m thinking 40 gns + corn meal to make up volume?)

What's your opinion on loading black powder rounds for something like this? It was originally a BP rifle, so why not just load cartridges in its new chambering with its intended propellant?

if you study the history of the rifle the last 10.45mm ammo issued for the rifles was loaded with a form of smokeless powder, so loading black powder in a 6.5 cartridge is not the solution.

are those been rebored to 6.5 from the 41 rf if so the gun was not made for more pressure like a hp 6.5 round go read vetterli rifle wikipedia under the part down at bottom states from back in that time when they needed more guns for the war say was not extended firings with this conversion from the start so what out at shooting these in 6.5 carcano

the barrels were re-sleaved , as for what pressure they are rated for, I do not know. The last 10.4mm ammo used in the rifles were loaded with a form of smokeless powder, the 6.5 cartridge is not that powerful of a round itself. I do not believe any government would waste the time and money to convert rifles that would be dangerous to actually use. I believe after head spacing the ones that I have , that when these guns were shipped as surplus years later, they had a habit, of removing the bolts from the rifles and shipping them separate, then just putting the mismatched bolts in the rifles causing head space problems.

Day after New Years at my range some new Milsurp collector loaded a carcano from rti with some PPU ammo and toasted the rifle.... No one got hurt but he showed it to a guy next to me the bore Before he Loaded it and of course the bore had Pitting n No rifling left.. The new collector also new to reloading did what this video is about, he told the guy next to me he just took out About Half of the Powder n re-seated the PPU projectile n crimped....Also never Slugged the Bore neither.... Guess the internet, computer games didn't tell him this....smh.... Not Good.

Thank you for all of your very well detailed videos across multiple surplus firearms. I as a collector, reloader, and shooter have learned so much from you. You deserve more appreciation for all of your hard work, thank you.

I have been using steinel's cast bullets for mine, but I just bought a big lot of used reloading gear and a led melter was in there so that might be changing soon

Koba, what FPS do you get with your cast load for the Vetterli? It is strange that you get gas blowback, your loads seem reasonably powerful enough. I have not had any gas blowback issues with a jacketed bullet reduced load out of 9 different rifles.

I found that the head space is off on that rifle

@@michaeljohns1019 I have shot some that are most definitely in excessive headspace but still haven’t had that problem. I’ve only been able to replicate it using deliberately incorrect powder for the application. But proper choices like IMR 4198 or Accurate 5744 have never given me any issues whatsoever.

You really need to improve your bench rest firing technique. You’re asking to get your hand injured if you do have a catastrophic failure. Get your off hand back on the butt under the stock on the toe.
