I've been having a lot of fun lately sending entire mixes into my pedal board and manipulating parameters on the fly like an SP404, and I thought I'd show you first an example of what it sounds like and second how to set up a virtual patch bay in Universal Audio's Console (if you're an Apollo user). You don't necessarily have to set it up the way I do if you have hardware inserts setup in your DAW. However, the more lengthy process of utilizing UA's Console's Cue Outputs allows you to route any source in your computer or in your studio (hardware) to your pedals or outboard processing gear. In addition to the explanation in the video, written instructions are included below.

How to set up Apollo's channels 3/4 as a unique Send & Return:
1. In Console, set CUE 4 (found in “Cue Outputs) to LINE OUTPUTS 3&4. Ensure that the “source” is set to “Cue 4”-not “mix” (this could result in excruciating feedback).
2. Connect LINE OUTPUTS 3&4 to the inputs of the pedals (or just 3 or 4 if you’re using mono pedals).
3. Connect LINE INPUTS 3&4 to the outputs of the pedals (or just 3 or 4 if you’re using mono pedals). Your pedals are now connected in a send and return loop on channels 3-4.
4. If you want to send your DAW’s master bus to the pedals, first send your DAW’s master bus to VIRTUAL 1&2 by selecting the Apollo’s Virtual Outputs in your DAW’s master output. (If your Virtual Inputs aren’t visible, you can set that it up in “Settings” in the I/O Matrix).
5. Now, by using the “Cue 4” fader in the sends section of Virtual 1&2, you can now send audio to your pedals.
6. Be sure to mute Virtual 1&2 in the mixer so you’re not hearing the wet and dry signal at the same time (unless you plan on using your pedals as “send” FX).
7. Additionally, any other channel in Console can be sent via “Cue 4” to the pedals. You can now record the audio you create with your pedals if you select Line Inputs 3&4 in your DAW.
I hope this is helpful for some of you producers/engineers out there. And, if someone has a better way of doing this or explaining it, by all means, post in the comments below!
