I never have those issues with my household iron and I've done decent amount of personal htv projects. I will say though that I've heard that you should use an iron with holes just around the side (which is all I've ever had) and not through the full face of the iron (which is what you used). Because the more holes make both the pressure and temperature more uneven

I never understood the difference between HTV and Iron-on.. and wondered if you had to only use a heat press for HTV or if you could a iron.

HTV and Iron-On are the same product :) HTV is the universal term, Iron-On is the term that Cricut adopted to call their brand of HTV. Great question!!
