My objective was to recover files created using Microsoft Word 1.0 on a Macintosh machine in the late 1980's. These files were stored on stored on several 800k floppy disks written in MFS format. It was ultimately determined that the most economical way to recover the files was to use a Kryoflux.
Information on this topic can be hard to come by, so I will link to all the resources I used. If there is anything I have been unclear on, hopefully these resources will allow you to fill in the gaps. If you are still confused, feel free to reach out to me.
Watch the video then follow the links, enjoy!

Finally got my KryoFlux in the mail 4 months after I ordered it. My Macintosh DOS 800k floppy was coming up with varying corrupt sectors even after trying 4 different model floppy drives! Finally I got the KryoFlux to force more revolutions on the drive with the best results, and it got all the sectors! I was able to recover all my high school papers made on a System 7 Macintosh with MacWrite Pro. I had the best results with Samsung SFD-321B However, just like with old VHS tape decks, your results may vary depending on the original drive which recorded the floppy disk and the condition of the drive you obtain

Thanks for this video. I bought my Kryoflux a few years ago to quickly archive some 5.25" diskettes from a vintage Z80 system, then stored it away after 100% success. I'm now archiving some diskettes from an HP logic analyzer, so I thought I'd just watch a video or two on the subject to get me back up to speed. That was a few days ago.... Well this time the Kryoflux didn't play ball. I tried changing various settings and four 3.5" diskette drives, but nothing seemed to work, and I convinced myself that the device had failed. But then when I was doing something else your tip about not using a USB hub came to mind. I wasn't using a hub, but I was using a USB port on a PCI expansion card instead of one from the motherboard. So I swapped to a 'motherboard' port and reinstalled the driver. Then hey presto(!), the Kryoflux happily calibrated the drive!

I think you were on the right track in emulating Word 1 on Mini vMac to check the formatting, but you would probably be better served by finding a good ‘bridge’ between old and new Word. If I were to guess, I bet either Mac Word 5 or the notorious Mac Word 6 could probably open the Mac Word 1 file then save in a format modern Word can open natively. Obviously vMac probably isn’t suitable for that, but I know the author has a Mac II emulator, to say nothing of programs like Basilisk II or qemu

I have a Mac Performa 6112CD PowerPC. I'm thinking any disk readable by this machine can transfer plain text files to disks readable by the a PC of some sort or another. Other types may include JPEGs as well. I have transferred text files from Mac to PC as well as JPEGs from this type Mac machine to a Dell or Gateway PC with floppies. So I saved some text files from an SE to a PC.
@zachschweinsberg2601
@zachschweinsberg2601 2 года назад
Yes, that appears to be another method you can use, since that machine was newer, but still supported the 400/800k disks with MFS format. Purchasing a Mac Performa for this purpose could be more expensive than the kryoflux though.
@ronboyd9
@ronboyd9 2 года назад
@@zachschweinsberg2601 It was simpler, and my ignorance of hardware at that time was just something I didn't comprehend. But I discovered certain file types would transfer by this method, even MIDI files.

Actually, I played some of the MIDI files I made on the Performa years ago recently on my iPhone after downloading an app.

All I knew was the capacity and format of the disks were incompatible, but I didn't realize just how incompatible they were.

@@ronboyd9 If you follow the sonic link in the description, it lists what machines and which operating systems are capable of reading 400/800k MFS files. That’s the only reason I know that what you’re saying is possible. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Will any floppy drive work? Is there a list of floppy drives that can read 800K mac floppies?
@zachschweinsberg2601
@zachschweinsberg2601 Год назад
Not all floppy disk drives have been verified to work, so there is no guarantee. I believe there is a list of confirmed working drives if you search for it on Google, or maybe it is in one of the links in my description, I remember seeing a list but not where

Do the 1990's apple floppy drives use standard 34-pin connections?
@zachschweinsberg2601
@zachschweinsberg2601 4 года назад
I don’t know. I have not had the chance to use one. The floppy disk drive in this video was for PC. I know someone you could ask though and get a pretty reliable answer. Go to the first link in the description and send an email to the address of the author. He seems very knowledgeable on this.

@@zachschweinsberg2601 I found the answer. KryoFlux won't work with anything but PC floppy drives. The old Macintosh drives use a special 20-pin connector and require a special controller built-in to the mac, making it pointless to have a KryoFlux if you have a Macintosh with a floppy SuperDrive, haha. The reason for my asking is that I was preparing a shopping list. I'm still waiting for my KryoFlux to ship from the maker in Germany after this COVID-19 restriction is lifted. I hope my 1997 floppies are still readable! Note: SuperCard Pro won't work because it doesn't make images that are compatible with Mini vMac or other tools. KryoFlux is the way to go for data recovery / forensics.

Chris Hernandez if something falls through I’d be down to try and recover just to see if I can. I wish I knew the full potential of this tool. I bought it for just this one purpose

@@chris24hdez I got to thinking about what you said... I think that even if someone owned a super drive that you could still have a use for the kryoflux. In my case, I had a working Mac SE which I could view the files on (assuming I could have found a Word for Mac 1.0 floppy), but I would have had to physically type a few hundred pages of material to get the content onto a modern computer.

Zach Schweinsberg the route I took was “printing” via LaserWriter driver which is found in the “Chooser”, once that is set to default, printing to a file gives a PostScript printing file which is easy to convert with Acrobat Distiller into PDF. I didn’t need to edit the documents so much as preserve them so it worked out nicely.

No, because the disk was written to in a variable speed.
