Thanks to this video I quickly worked out why my Rode Lav Mic wasn't working with my H1. A next day Amazon delivery of a Rode TRRS to TRS Adaptor soon solved the problem. Thanks for info!
On the H4N you have to be careful switching phantom on and off because there is a switch on the unit for "advanced settings" that must be on. If it isn't on some options are greyed out in the menu.
Thanks this helped me with enabling my lav on my H4N. I bought two different lavs and thought they were not compatiable because it was not recording sound but all i needed to do was enable the "Plugin Power" setting.
Just noticed this reply before even watching the video and you've solved my problem already! Many thanks for taking the time to comment. (On my Zoom H4n Pro Black Handy Recorder it's just labelled 'PLUG-IN' in the Input Setting menu).
Not sure if you’ve or haven’t gotten any way out on this yet. But the easiest way would be to purchase a 3.5mm jack to xlr adapter. There’s a lot provided out there. Hope this still helps after 3 years LOL
Which Lav Mic did you use for recording this video? I would like best recommendations for a Lav mic I would use for my H2N. Secondly, what is the setup if I intend to connect a Zoom H2N to a Lav Mic sender, Receiver, etc. Plus Camera.
Thx... thought my omni lab mic was damaged...had no idea I could use the line in as it has a headphone symbol beside it on the zoom h4n...as well as having to set the power on for either. Subscribed!
I'm doing all the things mentioned in this video, but for some reason I'm getting a lot of noise from my lav mic. It's a TRRS lav mic, but I have added a TRRS to TRS adapter to it, so that shouldn't be a problem. Is there anything additional I can do via the settings of the H4N Pro? Any help would be appreciated...
This was very helpful.. since im not very well versed with these audio recording technicalities. I would like to know how do i connect 2 microphones to the H2n in an interview type of a setup. one for the interviewer and second for the interviewee... please help... Thanks In advance..
I see on the Zoom H4n Pro Black Handy Recorder, Plug-in Power is just named 'PLUG-IN' in the Input Setting menu (I actually thought it was for recording with plug-in effects haha). That solved my problem with my new Røde Lav Go mic, many thanks!
I have a H4 Zoom and would like to use external Wav mics - for interviews - whats the best mic that you'd suggest and where's the input on the H4? Thanks
Hello, Zoom H4n Pro with Zoom lavalier LMF-2, plug it in on rear (like video show) , phantom on and off and turn on the "plug in power" settings function. Now it works and the sound is really great!
Thankyou so much for TS & TRS information..... I was wondering my zoom H1 is a defective piece that I bought because I was using TRRS lapel mic........ Thankyou so much really appreciate.
Hi, I have the Zoom H1. Can this be used with an iPhone (for video recordings) INSTEAD of a lavalier mic? Or would you recommend using both, a lavalier AND the H1, with the H1 as an interface...( I know the H5 can be used as an interface, but can the H1 do the same thing?) Thanks!
The quality would not differ when using the 1/8" input compared to the XLR input. Please note, phantom power can only be provided to the XLR inputs. Plugin power can only be provided to the 1/8" input.
The Rode Filmmaker Wireless Lav will plug directly into my Zoom H4n Pro without the TRS or TRRS Cable. I have this system that sits on top of my iOgrapher with my Air Pad 2. I also can plug my SmartLav+ into my H4n Pro.
This was great! Helped me make a decision and go with the H1. But my question is... What did you use to record the audio for this video? Did you edit it in post?
Hello, thank you for this video. I have a Zoom H4n and never noticed the 3,5mm jack at the rear before . Plugging in the Lavalier microphone worked by selecting in the menu PLUG IN=ON. I noticed a higher S/N level then using the internal microphones. But is it possible to plug in the Lavalier microphone in the input 1 and 2 below the H4n? I made a cable: TRS female (where the Lavalier Mic is plugged in) towards XLR male (left signal) and XLR male (right signal). I enabled in the menu the phantom +48V: it didn't work. The goal of plugging in the Lavalier into input 1 and 2 is to have two microphone sources at the same time. Having two microphone sources could be easier to make an interview = not switching the microphone between the guest and myself.
We recently purchased a Zoom H4N Pro and we can't seem to get a lavalier mic to work. Can someone confirm that we need to get a 3.5 mm TRRS to TRS adaptor to get it to work?
i want to use the mic of zoom h4n as my cellphone's microfone, is it possible? or only in pc ? for this expansive recorder, i was expecting to use this function
This video gave me a chance to understand in 2 minutes how to plug my lav. mic to H5. Guys form Zoom, pls add something much more clear to understand plug shape (how many bars on plug works) and power switch for lav. mic. Anyway thanks for this video !!!
i have a question that 've been searching trough all of the internet and didnt find an answer to it yet. i want to get the h5 for the sole purpose of motovloging, my main purpose would be to talk and still be able to reccord whats happening on my surroundings would i be able to reccord both myself (lavalier) and surroundings (X/Y capsule)using a lavalier mic plugged to the X/Y capsule? or do i need an adaptor do plug it to the bottom of the device?
I have tried with mine and when you plug the lav mic on the X/Y capsule it takes only the sound of the lav mic, so no possibility to record the surroundings. I bought an adaptater for the XLR Input but for some reason, it doesn't work... so annoying
Hi thank you for this video. I am trying to plug my lav mic to my Zoom H5 with an adaptater TRS 6,35mm mini-jack>jack on the XLR Input1 with Phantom power +48dB. It doesn't work and I can't understand why. Do you have some suggestions how I could solve this? Thank you in advance for your help?
I am wanting to use on the H4n the EXT MIC input, with a Y connector, for 2 lav mics. What type of a Y-splitter is needed here? (P.S. I will use 2 more lav mics into the XLR/1/4" jacks, giving me 4 lav connections.)
Am I correct to assume that there's no way to record both via the jack input and the builtin stereo mic at the same time? i.e. if I want to use the built-in mic as a room mic and also connect a lavalier mic, I‘d have to use a mono lavalier and some kind of adapter for input 1 or 2. yes?
On the h2n I have that model and I was able to enable something called spatial audio and once I did that it recorded audio from my plug-in mic as well as the built-in mics. It was actually really cool.
When using a lavalier mike with TRS connection, is it possible to record simultaneously with the XY capsule a seperate stereo track? Or is it only possible if the lavaliers uses the XLR input? Thanks for your help. Tom
ZoomSoundLab thanks for the fast reply another question arised on the latest shooting: when recording with the H5 to a sony a6500 by aux cable from the line out, can I record simultaneously with the zoom as backup audio track? Or will it interrupt the recording of the cam? Best Tom
I'm confused... is this video outdated? I have a H4N Pro and my Boya-M1 Pro which has a TRRS connector works with the H4N Pro without any adapters. On the Boya mic itself the camera setting must be switched to on and the plug-in powder switched to on on the H4N. Has there been changes to the exterior mic jack on the H4N that now accommodates TRRS connectors or do I still need a TRRS to TRS adapter?
Connected my boya lapel mic in zoom h5 but the audio is almost nil...coming very low...plus,when i connect my ev microphone it is not recording directly to adobe cc. The built in mic is working fine everywhere though
Hi i want to use the smartlav+ external mic. I have the sc30 adapter but it doesn't work. plug in power is on and i am usung x/Y. but nothig happened. How can i solve the problem
gawd I know this is old, but having not long ago purchased a Q4n, and now trying to get an external mic working, at least I know the jack is correct, and that the mic/headphone works on my PC system no problem. I have now tried three separate mic's none work. Interestingly when I reverse the plugs there is some sort of sound to be heard but hey that ain't right!! I have enabled and disabled the Plugin Power setting all to no avail....very disappointing to say the least, external jacks were one reason to buy this thing!
We have not tested or confirmed compatibility with this type of microphone. If you have a specific model and would like to inquire about compatibility, please email info@zoom-na.com for information.
Thank you for this. If I plug a lavalier into a Zoom H2n, does the lavalier automatically cut off the H2n's built-in mics, or can I record the signal from the lavalier AND the H2n mics at the same time? I would like to set up an interview where the talent has the lavalier attached to their lapel, whilst I speak into the Zoom H2n. Is this possible? I've check other videos on RU-vid and none of them make it clear whether plugging in a lavalier automatically switches off the Zoom's internal mics (no matter which Zoom you are using). Many thanks for your advice!
Ok, thanks very much for your reply. I guess that makes sense really, if you want portable audio recording, but keeping the Zoom out of shot if you're doing a piece to camera. Is the same true of the Zoom H4n? Or does that have the capability to record from the lavalier and the internal mics at the same time? (the two mics I own are an H2n and the H4n).
+Matt Flavour The Mic/Line input of the H4n will override the onboard mics. However, you can record a lavalier and signal from the 2 XLR/TRS inputs at the same time.
While doing this method.. Will this record into 1 single overall track? Or will each input being used be recorded into separate files? OR can you have 1 single master file from all the inputs, as well as all the individual recordings from each track? Thanks in advance!
Can I plug four (4) lavs into the H6? IE use this four jacks (with an adapter) below the XY? I’ll try it tomorrow but open to suggestions for - four - actors
hello George, can you please tell me how did your interview go ? can you share your knowledge ,even i want to connect 4 lavs into h6 and wondering how do you connect them ? what is the adapter you used? Thanks
Actually the shoot is next Sunday, Oct 6th so I can’t say - definitively - until it’s done... but I’ll check back let people know how it goes/went (though I’m sure others have done this before!)
@@TheGeoDaddyThat would be great if you let us know .Can you tell me the kit you're going to use on 6th of oct ,like what lavs and adapters? Thanks for the quick reply
+Santiago Ferreyra We cannot make any mic recommendations. We suggest contacting the dealer where you purchased the H6. They should know about mics you can use.
You would not be able to connect 3 microphones to any of the H4n inputs. We would suggest connecting one or two of the lavaliers to the EXT MIC input, then connect the remaining microphones to inputs 1/2.
A splitter is just that, BTW, it duplicates an output in two physical directions. Splitters often don't work in reverse -- two mics will not "reverse-split" into one input reliably. There ARE "summing" cables that have a sort of micro-mixer onboard and take two audio inputs and generate a single combined signal. But an average y-cable doesn't do that.
Damn, I have a TRRS and could not figure out why it wasn't working with my zoom... now I know. Though it *was* advertised not only to work with phones, but DSLR and recorders too?! I don't get it.
Hi - I'd like to use up to 4 lavaliers with my H6. That of course means using the combo jacks on the "XLR/TRS" inputs. I've tried this with several generic lavaliers for a smartphone from Amazon by making a cable that puts the Ring 2 and sleeve of the TRRS onto tip and ring of a 1/4" TRS. Phantom power is on. Neither mic works. What's the magic connection so I can use several lavaliers?
Lavalier microphones for smartphones will likely need an adapter to be compatible. Any standard lavalier microphone should work without any adapter necessary.
Yes, I know an adapter is needed. That's why I said I made / would make a cable. What I am asking is to get a list of what connects to what and how to apply power. Will phantom power work?
I have also tried using my H6 with multiple lavs and adapter, using phantom power. Nothing seems to be working. This is frustrating. To be able to use only one lav when the H6 has all those inputs is a severe limitation! Zoom people, give us a solution.
I have a Zoom H5 and a Boya M1 Lav mic, but somehow my Zoom doesn't recognize the Lav mic even though I used the 6.5mm TS jack in it? Any thoughts? cos I really need help right now. Thanks
I have a Zoom H2N and a Boya BY-M1 Lav which has TRRS. Due to your video it cannot work, but it does!? I just plug in the Boya-TRRS, Zoom recognizes an external mic and it works, I can record. How is this possible, has the Zoom line in changed in the meantime?
It has to do with the specific pin-out of your microphone's plug. The H2n has a TRS stereo unbalanced input jack. You can inquire with the manufacturer about the pin-out of the microphone plug to understand how the pins are aligning correctly with the H2n jack.
@@ZoomSoundLab oh, so glad that you replied fast) but how to power externally? I just have no experience, but want to buy F1 so badly and somehow to record violin using DPA 4099 mic
Hi, I have a Zoom H5. When using lavaliere mics I haven't set the plug-in on ON, is this necessary? And why schooled I do this? I have been able to record with lavalieres having the plug-in on OFF.
