I watch A LOT of different Photoshop tutorials and I have to say - Your tutorials are simply the BEST!! Your teaching style is perfect. The pace is perfect, you seem to intuitively know when to clarify something, as though you can hear some of us saying "wait, what?". Thank you so very much!!

You could, of course, also make a virtual copy in LR and then edit it in PS, keeping the original untouched--especially since somethings can't be done in PS without rasterizing the image.

I like the more advanced tutorials. This one answered some of the questions I have had about LRC and PS working together. The more I think about it, I'd rather get it done in PS! I do a lot of file organization in Windows File Explorer and when LRC makes changes in a Raw file, they don't get reflected in file explorer unless I specifically save the file. The sidecar does not work to show anything in file explorer, of course! Well, that is me and just how I do things....everyone is different.

Actually, breaking down the 3 options when opening images from LR to PS was educational. I'll admit, I simply would just open with edits because my LR has a lot of plug-ins I use. But, it's nice to know the other options as I can see myself using them now too. Thanks!!!

Very helpful video! It leaves me with a question. It is my understanding that you can’t make pixel edits such as removing objects on a smart object. If I have that correct then I am wondering how To make edits like Contact aware Phil or clamping if you use your Suggested method of opening the Image as a smart object in Photoshop. Appreciate your help.

This helped me figure out why I lost some Camera RAW setting options when opening from Lightroom. I had to open as a smart object, so my photo remained RAW. Then I had options like the White Balance presets, Chromatic Abberation checkbox, and Lens Corrections.

Hi Colin, Do you know why the "Open as a smart object" isn't the default position when moving from Lr to Ps? It seems that it would make life a lot easier. Or, putting the question the other way, why would one wish to open an image in Ps and work in destructive mode? Thanks. I enjoy your videos very much and find them so useful. Nick

I've learned a lot and keep learning from your channel! Here is a question for you: is it possible to change the size of the tiff file that is created? I always end up with large files. That's the reason I choose to save my Ps work as jpeg and then import it again to my Lr library. Thank you!!!

I've always been just opening into photoshop. Never have I done the Smart Object option. But this is exactly something I've wanted. I hated that my lightroom adjustments were no longer adjustable in Photoshop. It essentially turns the image into a JPEG when you do it without the smart object. Which I've always found annoying. Thank you for this incredibly useful, yet simple tip.

Great video thank you. My question is about troubleshooting a problem. I suddenly can no longer "Edit Photo in Photoshop" from Lr. It will open Ps but no image appears. I have tried everything, from uninstalling Ps & Lr and re-installing both, updated my Nvidia driver, rolling back the last Camera Raw update etc. but to no avail. I am running a PC with Windows 10. Have you ever come across this problem? Thanks

Thanks for the information, it's helpful. I open files in photoshop from lightroom a lot. The only thing I don't like about it is the HUGE file size of the tiff files it creates. It would be nice if it just sent it back as RAW file or something other than a tiff file that's several hundred megabytes in size when the original RAW file is less than 30 megabytes! I understand why tiff files are so big and why RAW files are so much smaller, I just wish they'd come up with a way to mitigate the outrageously large file size that's sent back to lightroom from photoshop! Whether or not it's possible I don't know. Any thoughts on that? Is it even possible?

@photoshopcafe

A new file is created and Lightroom indexes it. Lightroom doesn't store the images in its library
@michaelplathphotography8537
So are you saying that changes are only visible in one direction only, mainly from PS to LR. to get around this you have to edit as a copy, (another separate image) set as pre-set , Go to PS navigate to the copy smart object and apply the pre-set at which point it will apply it to the original image. The Question Is going to be do you need to see how your LR edits interact with your PS edits if the answer is no you might be able to get away with ensuring all LR edits are done first.

After saving my photo in Photoshop my edited photo does not re appear in Lightroom. When I try to close out of Lightroom it says that I have a project still open in photoshop. Here’s my time line. I edited my photo in Lightroom. I enhanced my photo in Lightroom. Then I wanted to remove some objects in PS so I chose edit in PS. I made my corrections. Clicked save. And the photo is stuck in photoshop. How do I get it back in LR?

@dunnymonster
@dunnymonster 3 года назад
Another option is to use the " save as " option in Photoshop where you can give your file a name ( so in this example call it Tesla Car ) and then when you return to lightroom it will be easier to locate in future. It can get quite confusing when you have multiple versions of the same image with the same raw file name no eg ARW567890, ARW567890-edit.tif, ARW567890-edit.edit.tif. Definitely great advise to open RAW files as smart objects in PS, that's the smart thing to do 😋😉😁
@allumpfa
@allumpfa 3 года назад
I have found that if I go the "save as" route then Lightroom will not be updated with this file and to get it to appear in LR you have to synchronise the folder in LR and import the new file. Have you found otherwise?
@dunnymonster
@dunnymonster 3 года назад
@@allumpfa I've not had that issue Peter. I usually prefer to save my PS edits as .psd/psb ( depending on the file size ) and when I exit PS and go back to LR Classic my file is automatically added to my develop filmstrip next to my original RAW file. It effectively adds my PS edited .psb file to the same catalog as my raw file in LR. This only works of course if I take the RAW file from Lightroom and then into PS using the " edit in " dialog. If I work on a RAW file by directly opening it in Abobe Camera Raw/Photoshop then yes, I too have to import my file into the relevant LR catalog to continue in Lightroom.
@allumpfa
@allumpfa 3 года назад
@@dunnymonster Thanks for your reply, I need to investigate this further. I follow your process, saving as a psd/b and as long as I just use File>Save it updates LR fine but as soon as I go File>Save As I get the box with the option to save to cloud or computer. If I choose computer and put it in the same folder as the original file then it does not appear in LR without synchronising the folder. Perhaps best option is just use the save option and rename the file in LR?
@dunnymonster
@dunnymonster 3 года назад
@@allumpfa I think I know where the problem is. I just realised that when I use " save as " in Photoshop it opens up my file explorer and I have to save it to the same destination as my raw files are. That is to say, I'm saving to the same file lightroom gets its catalog from. This is perhaps why I see it automatically appear in my develop window without me having to separately import it into the catalog later. Once you have saved via this method for one file it becomes the default so if you are working in another catalog you'll accidently send completed PS edits to the wrong catalog ( which has happened to me many times sadly lol ). So, yeah, when you click " save as " direct your new file to the same location your original raw files are kept and you should see that file include itself alongside your original raw file in the develop window. I create new catalogs for every project so I always have to remember to change that default to the catalog I'm working with or I inadvertantly end up sending my Photoshop edited .psb/psd to an entirely wrong catalog and spend ages scratching my head wondering why I can't see it in my Lightroom develop windows. If you basically have all your RAWs in a single catalog then you won't have to remember to change this on new imports. Sorry if I gave the impression the PS file goes to your LR catalog by its self, your first one does have to be directed to the correct location and then all subsequent edits you do from that specific LR catalog in Photoshop will appear automatically without you having to specify it. Hope that clears the confusion I probably added to 😋😉
