In this video I show you how to attach antlers to a replica deer skull using magnets. You will need to have already set the position of the antlers by sanding down the pedicles.
1. Drill hole into antler for screw. Make sure to make the hole just slightly smaller than the screw. Screw down the magnet but do not screw tight because the magnet will break.
2. Drill inset hole into skull. Hole should be the same width as the magnet. Drill down to the depth of both magnets.
3. Screw magnet into skull. Both magnets should just be able to touch.
4. Position antlers.
Magnets have a strong pulling force but are not as strong with tipping force. Insetting the magnet provides a collar so that the antler cannot be easily tipped but is being held securely by the pulling force of the magnet.
Let’s face it, attaching antlers to a skull can be a bit precarious. I have no reason to sugar coat that it can be tough trying to get the base of the antler and the pedicle to attach perfectly, trying to find a secure mounting system, drilling into antlers, getting the angles right. My goal, as with all the instruction I provide, is to give you options so you can decide what works best for you. Using magnets may seem a bit out there, but it is an option that does work. I have already posted a video on using threaded rod to mount antlers but this method does have its frustrations. This video is part of a series to help expand antler mounting options that are more secure and arguably easier. I have two more videos showing ways to attach antlers and you don’t even have to get the angle right for it to work. Pros - Antlers are not permanently attached to the skull. The antler can be taken off say if you want to use them for hunting?? Best option though is that this would save significantly on shipping a skull.
Cons - Magnets cost money.
