Started using this feature yesterday because of your video, Alex, so I wanted to come back and thank you. Also, I just discovered that even though DR turns your additional timelines into single clips when you drag them onto your main timeline, you can still tab back into those other timelines, make changes, and all those edits will automatically appear in the single clip on your main timeline. That just blows my mind.

Thank you, I came here to ask exactly that question. I think I have just found my new workflow.
@Chan4k

Hi Brian, But it doesn't work for me, is it because I use the free version? For example, I create a timeline-x with few clips, and import it into my main timeline. After that I open timeline-x and do some modifications like extend, add, delete etc etc. But these changes never follow to main timeline and I need to re-import again instead all the changes updates automatically. Why? Thanks
@BrianWhitmerMusic

@@Chan4k Sorry for the very late reply, Chandra, and I'm also sorry that I don't have an answer for you. Like you, I'm using the free version of DR, so I don't know why yours is behaving differently.

You just answered the exact question I was going to ask. Thanks heaps!
@FlyingAroundOz
@FlyingAroundOz 3 года назад
@@Chan4k I would guess you've figured this out already, but just in case you haven't, I did some experiments with this. I found that changes that don't alter the length of the sub-timeline(s) will go through to the master timeline immediately. If you change the length of any sub-timelines, just go into the master timeline and delete that sub-timeline and re-insert it into the master timeline.

I just found out you can save your Timeline clips to your Power Bin too. **head smack** Such a time-saver.

True. But, the Power Bins are most effective when used to contain footage or elements that you want to use in multiple projects. For instance, an intro to your vlogs, etc. Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that out there. Cheers.

@@rc5932 Resolve considers compound clips as a timeline. What you could do is export a timeline and import into any project you need it for. The other option is setting up a project template. This is a bit of work upfront but it will be a huge timesaver later on. It is relatively easy to do.

You Just saved me a TON OF TIME! I had a very long and detailed video when the client said, can we just break it up into smaller chunks to put online? Sure!?! So I made smaller chunks of 5-10min each, then "Maybe we can put the whole thing up too" well the finer edits were done on the smaller chunks so I was trying to find all the edits from the smaller timelines to re-incorporate into the compilation. Well, after watching your video, 5 minutes later, I had the compilation complete from all the separate timelines! Enjoy the coffee I'll be getting you. Thanks!

Why is it that when I need DaVinci Resolve advice, I search everywhere, getting confused and convoluted explanations but finally end up finding simple, straightforward answers on your channel? Whatever you're doing, you're doing it right - so keep doing it. The rest of them seem far too clever for their own teaching good. Great job, Alex; you're much appreciated. Thank you.

Terrific info, thank you! I’m a complete Resolve neophyte and while I understand the basic timeline behaviors I kept having exactly the scenario you described: stumbling over myself while making unrelated edits. I kept thinking “people make multi-hour videos in this thing, no way there isn’t a way to encapsulate stuff” and lo, here I am.

o.0 thank you so much! I saw your video a few days ago and since a few weeks I am working on a video with roughly 30 cuts per minute and different chapters. And changing and cropping things at the beginning are so tedious and sometimes I am working on something at the end and maybe accidentally delete something from the beginning. When I saw your video title I sat here like "o.0 Wait... THIS IS A THING??" you saved me so much time! xD

I’m new to DaVINCI and now find that having multiple timelines is a pretty convenient way to organize. Your video really helped show me some of the best practices of using multiple timelines, like how to merge the timelines back together later -- thank you. I’m also using Bins to sort out my shots to help to keep things organized and I’ve discovered that you can right-click on a bin and choose “Create New Timeline using Selected Bin”. That creates a timeline that seems to have the same settings as “Timeline 1”, and the new timeline has all of the clips from the bin already. The only thing that's weird is that things slowed down on the new timeline but that seems to have been resolved with a second "Generate Optimized Media". I'd already done that for each item in each bin. It would also be nice to be able to color code the entire clip to help reduce confusion, rather than just inserting a marker.

Excellent. I am happy to see these best practices. I am new to Davinci Resolve, but not to dealing with complexities as a passionate developer. So i was looking for all the ways to abstract, parameterize, create reusable entities, and understand programming model to create and use building blocks for creating things from the get go, rather than learning them later as an afterthought. And avoid plunging into laborious tedium in the way of ramp up learning. So please share more of these, on all such topics that enables working with DSR smartly rather than laboriously where not needed. Thanks Sri.

Thank you very much for sharing this timesharing feature of DR. Like many others have stated, it has saved me a lot of time and effort. Unfortunately (using version 18.6.6) I have found multiple occasions where while a timeline plays correctly in its own timeline, it will play (and render) incorrectly when placed inside another timeline (to be clear, it has been just one clip in each timeline that didn't play correctly and it has occurred on both video and audio clips). I played around with numerous work-arounds but the only one that appears to resolve the issue is placing the offending clip inside a compound clip first before applying effects, keyframes and the such. It seems to me to be a defect and hopefully it will get fixed in an upcoming release.
