When trying to encourage deer to bed in certain locations on our property by creating man-made bedding areas, we aren't trying to reinvent the wheel. We are letting the deer tell us what conditions they prefer to bed in by scouting the natural bedding areas. In this video we travel to 3 different locations on our property to show you how we try to use natural bedding areas as a guide when creating our man-made bedding areas to increase the probability that the deer will bed in those locations.

Good video. Looks like your first spot was to tight.

I think you are right. I will have to continue to monitor that spot and possibly open it up a little. That was a small pocket within almost a half acre clear cut. Within the clear cut I try to create as many different scenarios as I can. Some pockets are large, some tighter, some with views to the south, some with views to the north.. create as many different bedding scenarios, all with the same preferred conditions, to hopefully get deer to bed somewhere within the clear cut regardless of the wind / weather and the individual personality of the deer. On our previous property the deer really liked those tight spaces over the more open bedding areas, but this property might be a little different. Just need to continue to monitor and adjust!

@@whitetailevolution Yup. That's how we learn what works and what doesn't. Have to experiment.

Great video i alot of hills and cuttover on my lease I've seen some beds out on the points but not as many as I would think, starting to think they use the cuttovers alot, what are your thoughts?

You right about those points. Deer, often bucks, really like to bed out on points or just over the top of a hill. But the point still needs to offer security, especially in high pressure states like Michigan. If you have a point that you feel would be a good location for bedding area, you could drop a few trees to give them the cover that they're lacking. If they aren't bedded on the point currently, just try to figure out why. Too open? Too pressured? No browse? Better cover nearby? I find deer in Michigan really like to be within cover.

Thanks for the visual on bedding areas and how to create them. Do you use any apps on your phone to mark deer trails and bedding areas so you know how to approach them and how the deer travel between them? It is funny how those bedding areas look like the woods on my land. Have roughly 8-10 does using my food plots right now. I took the tractor and plowed some of the 2 feet + of snow off of it and the deer were on the food plot within 15 minutes of putting the tractor away. Thanks.

Yeah I use onX to map the trails and mark spots that either the deer are currently bedding in or areas where I would like them to bed in the future. And you're right about the bedding areas looking similar to woods currently, this property was for the most part open hardwoods so just by adding the cover to the ground by dropping the trees gave the deer something to use as cover. Over time it will really thicken up with more weeds, grasses and woody browse. Knowing it's going to explode with new growth is a big reason why you want to get in and work on the structure of the bedding area right away, once that new growth does come in, it will be more difficult to see what's going on and more difficult to cut your way through. Not impossible, just more challenging. Great work with the plot! The deer are thanking you and hopefully you'll find a shed or two out there when everything melts.

I think location might trump construction. Challenging to figure out. 20 foot hill to the north during winter is perfect example.

Great point! The location is very important. The fact that the last bedding area is on the south side of a hill makes it even more attractive during the winter. That said, the deer bed there all year long so it’s not just a winter bedding area. We’ve also got other spots on the property that have the potential to be great winter hangouts, south facing slopes, but because there’s no cover in the area the deer don’t bed there.. as we work to improve the property we’ll bring trees down to make those areas to make them more attractive as well. But you’re absolutely right, location is very important and should always be considered before started the construction of a bedding area.
