In this new Technology Moment, we share with you a practical overview of how to use the SFP ports of Unifi switches from the small and still powerful US-8-150W to traffic hubs such as the US-16-XG in order to take advantage of this technology that brings so many benefits.
This adds to all the advantages that the use of these manageable switches have, from an interface as versatile as that of the Unifi "Network Application", which, allows you to have absolute control of all the relevant parameters when it comes to analyzing and managing the communications of your network.

Great video. I worked in a data center and it took me a while to understand why our support people used to ask us what color was the fiber cables - as if they were blue, or yellow or orange, it referred to the mode and speed they could transmit and receive at. One thing I had a hard time understanding was how in the world they ever wired up the phone line linkages, there must have been thousands of tiny color coded wires all wired into a patch panel, that was like 50 feet long by like 5 feet tall.

Very good introduction to using fibre. Really like you advice to configuring remote devices before installing.

Hello a very informative video, but I wonder we have a LC simplex fiber internet thats plugged into a CPE interno xg6846 via a SFP module from there it gos to a 24 port ethernet switch that goes the wall outlets arounrd the home, we only need computer internet not TV telephone etc. So I wonder can I plug the LC sfp module straight into a more modern ethernet switch without the need of CPE (or media converter) ?

Hi, that is very common question, however the most probable configuration your xg6846 has is a router, so you cannot take it out. It may not look as much but the ontly thing you need from it, is internet bandwidth connected either to your switch or to another router of your own which you could fully manage. Does not make any difference in terms of conectivity. If you want to have full control of your internet, ask your ISP for a public IP to be managed by your own router, you'll have full control then.

I am trying to connect a cisco switch with Unifi switch via SFP, multimode fiber. Which SFP is ideal for this ?

Hello Theepan. From my experience most of them are compatible but you may loose some interoperability and meter readings when you use them in different equipment. It is better to specifically buy one compatible with your device. Such information is always available in the characteristics of the SFP module you just have to make sure if it is SFP or SFP+ on each, once you link them you select the speed at which they will share information. Sometimes auto link works fine. In Unifi speedlink may be necessary to be configured.

sometimes Cisco works only with original SFP, ebay is your friend

I went on ebay and youtube and some companies will tell you which sfp is compatible for what type of router/switch. They have graphs and databases so you can match things up.

I have a usg pro that I want to connect via multi mode 10 gig to UniFi switch 8 port 150w over 100 metres and then daisy chain to another 8 port 150. Is this possible?

Technically of course you can do it but at a max speed of 1.25 Gbps as the US8 only has two SFP ports and not SFP+ . But you can can go as far as 550 m with MMF . Hope it helps and good luck with your project.

I wish there was an sfp 10g Nic that would do 5 speeds so I could supercharge my network
