Using a public charger for the first time can be intimidating, especially when we have all been used to using a petrol pump for years.
What do public chargers look like, how do you pay and how fast are they?
These are all questions we answer in the video, as well as looking at the differences between on-the-road charging and destination charging.
We do our best to cover as much as we can, but if you have any further questions then leave a comment below and we'll do our best to answer them.

Thanks. Hopefully picking up my first BEV next week. As a newbie, this was easily the best produced and filmed video on public charging. Excellent; thanks. When I collect the car I will recommend to the dealer that they suggest this video for their new electric customers.

Thanks Rob, very kind of you to say. I have to admit this was a very early video not long after we started the channel to go along with our website and installation business, so our newer video production is much better. But I am very glad you found the info helpful, so thanks for the feedback and recommendation. Plenty more on our channel and chargers, charger guides and more our website www.smarthomecharge.co.uk Thanks, Danny - editor at Smart Home Charge

Thanks John, although this one is quite old now so well worth seeing if there's any newer videos on RU-vid. Or you can check out our written guide on public charging, which has been updated: www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/guides/how-to-use-a-public-charger-for-an-electric-car/

I'm done with electric cars, I went back to gasoline because of all hassle associated with electric cars and trucks ! No more for me , I've learned my lesson and my " ELECTRIC CAR ANXIETY SYNDROME IS GONE " ... Happy days are here again !!

this is something Ive wondered about, as the gov force petrol to electric, I would be reliant on public chargers, I have no drive or garage, and have to park either on the road infront of my house (the other side of the road) or in a public car park for residents that is a little way from my house, so i would be unable to have a home charging point. I would of adopted an EV already if this wasnt the case. does anyone else have this sort of situation and manage with an EV?

Hi great video - if 2 vehicles use a 22kw public charger together do they each have 22kw available or 11kw
@SmartHomeCharge

Hi - thanks for watching. Regarding your question, it depends. If multiple vehicles are charging at a hub then they are almost certainly sharing the power available at the site as a whole, but it's not always even. There are lots of factors to consider as to why you may not get the full charging rate possible at any given charging site. Osprey Charging recently unveiled a new type of charger that better distributes the power available at public chargers - this video explains how they work but will also explain how "other" public chargers typically work and I think will answer your question: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mZuBaZEcrho.html Danny - editor at Smart Home Charge

Some useful info but key issues missed out. First off, no not all electric car owners can charge at home. How do you charge your car if you live in a rented property or in a flat on the 5th floor. And if you live in the city this is MORE likely. Paying £15 a day for CC London an electric car is the must have option but as a potential new owner I need to understand how it works with parking at a charger station? is it time limited? Do you have to pay to park on the road by a charge point? If its not time limited is it likely the (As in my area) 2 available road side charge points will be occupied overnight. Does the system have something to try and prevent this? Does the app send a message to your phone telling you when your car is all charged up? Is there a penalty for leaving your car at a charge point after its charged up? Also shocked by the "supply your own cable" charge points. Do the cables have some sort of locking system? at £200 each I can see them getting nicked a lot.

Thanks Mark for the feedback. This was made over a year ago and, as you point out in your comment, there is a lot to cover. Not to mention how much has changed in the year since I made this. My aim was to make a short and simple video explaining the basics, but so much has changed since then that an update is due but I am working on quite a few other projects currently. You seem to have a good grip on the public charging situation. Why don't you make your own video? Thanks for watching, Danny - editor at Smart Home Charge

What if you don’t have the chance to have a home charger like flat owner or renters who’s landlords won’t allow installation of a charger…

Yes, contactless payment is much more convenient on ev charging points -all of them should work this way!! Having to download multiple different apps to use different operators' charge points is a real pain and sometimes these apps don't work when you need them.

Hi James, a very good point. This review on Smart Home Charge might be of interest to you. You can use these cards for multiple charging networks. www.smarthomecharge.co.uk/reviews/

The Gridserve network will be 100% contactless payment when it's complete, and will make longer trips on the UK's main road routes much less of an issue. Connected Kerb are now installing a further 30,000 public charging connections in the UK, with the aim of reaching 190,000 charge connections by 2030. Again, all will have contactless payment....

Do you think I'm going to put a app on my phone so people can hack into my phone
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 2 года назад
Anyone who has the tech to do it, can hack into your phone now.....even your phone at home. The police have been able to pinpoint a mobile signal for 20+ years. If you don't like the thought of being hacked or tracked, I suggest you throw your phone in the nearest skip, along with your computer.
@timothykramer2551
@timothykramer2551 2 года назад
And you have to sit there for a half an hour to an hour
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 2 года назад
no you don't. You can go and do something else while the car charges. If you have an appropriate app on your phone, it will let you know when the charge completes..... The best time to charge an EV is at night, when the cost is at it's lowest. Plus you won't actually need your car when you're asleep.

Down loading apps and registering cards is a complete pain in the arse. EVERY charger need to be plug, pay and charge, contactless. EVs are a pain to start with, messing about with tippy tappies just makes things worse.

I really hate the presumption that most EV owners have access to home charging - it's just not true. If we're going to have an electric future, we've got to face that fact.
@dmorgsev
@dmorgsev Год назад
That's fair. We shouldn't presume that. This video was also made years ago so out of date now really. But, it is also fair to say many many people can charge at home and most people I know buying EVs are doing so because they can charge at home I.e. its an easier switch for them.
