Quantizers are absolutely amazing to use in eurorack. They make a lot of melodic opportunities and pave the way for happy accidents. Here is one way I use the Bard Quartet. It's an amazing 4 channel quantizer with a lot of extra features. Stay tuned for more about it in more videos.
Time Stamps

I love seeing and supporting new people with valuable content in the modular space …. So many reviewers out there and not a lot of anything else Thank you for sharing Keep going brother

Thanks so much! And thanks for watching! That means a lot. For real though, new modules are nice but I love how just thinking about what you have in a case can spark new ideas and ways of making music. I’d be lying if some modules have made huge impacts to the case but I think that has more to do with that slow process people talk about. I try to think about what is actually missing and what will make the biggest impact at the time. It’s meant some weird purchases I’m sure. I got the 3xmia so early on considering it was just an offset, attenuverter and mixer but that use case has been amazing each other module that gets added. I do want to be intentional about the content I put here. Some will talk up a particular module but I hope the core ideas always adapt to most cases. Even killer features I think only present interesting concepts of splitting this stuff up. At the end of the day though, you can do quite a lot with a little.

Great walkthru video of how to evolve a patch, especially when integrating a quantizer into the signal flow. Really nice jams! :D

Thanks! Really appreciate that! I’ve been loving the way the quantizer fits into the puzzle. Glad you liked it!

I look forward to more parts. Possibly a part 2? That would be cool. If you're feeling wacky, you could try part phi [golden ratio]. Probably don't do that.

Thanks! Yeah, I have a part 2 in mind, probably not phi but likely 3. This module opened up a couple things I wasn’t expecting.

This setup reminds me a lot of my Rene v2. I think quantizers shine with the unique lfo’s you plumb through them. Great video

Thanks! I love the Reve v2 but have yet to play with one. There’s so much in that one module that’s just lovely! The 16 steps, the states, how gate on works and how you can navigate through the notes in different ways and attenuation of the values on the knobs. Honestly, I wanted to get a Rene and might eventually if I get a bigger case. I definitely have been pulling in some ideas of the Rene as I chase melodies. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted a module and then tried to pull in an element of what it did or found a workaround that may be partway but also so much fun. The Bard Quartet definitely capitalized on the idea of using the varigate as the sequencer. Arp mode gets another step closer. That reminds me of something else to put into the next video. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks! Really appreciate that! This was fun to make so I imagine I’ll make more videos. A have a few in mind on quantizing alone. I’m kinda chasing melodies.

I wish you could constrain a multi octave range by wrapping from, say, 2V back to zero instead of just attenuating. That way you could preserve the rate of changes. It's easy in digital land with PD or the like, but, uh, voltages are not bytes.

Oooh, that’s an exciting idea!! Let me think. If I understand what you’re thinking correctly, you could take say a 4 octave range and split it into 2 (0 to 2v and around 2 to 4v). You might need something like a comparator and a switch, the comparator to send a trigger when that 2v line is crossed going above or below and getting that to correspond to the sequences going into the switch. The 0 to 2v and the trick is adding a -2v offset to the other 2 to 4v range. Mind you, for my use, the varigate has a bigger range than I need for pitch. 8 or 10 octaves. Can’t remember if it’s 8 or 10v on cv out. This module also has a transpose so if I wanted to shift everything up in increments higher or lower than the nearest octave, I can do it that way. I’ll have a think if I have something here mind you that can do what you’re thinking for instance if you had a more precise sequencer to begin with.

I also wonder if you could add offset to a mult of the sequence - enough that it would trigger a momentary switch (the switchblade can be). I’d have to test it out though to see when the momentary switch would switch back? When it dropped below the threshold I assume. Maybe that could work?

Very much! A super small solution for percussion in my case. Just feed it new samples every now and then and you’re good.

I find it difficult to correlate the lamps with the sounds. Perhaps a different camera refresh rate would help.

Thanks very much for the feedback! I’m working on another video shooting at 1/30 and it seems much better both in reducing the flickering on the Bard Quartet and allowing a lot easier tracking on the blinking lights. I do wish I was shooting in 4k though as the punch ins would be a lot easier to see. Anyway, if you catch the next one, let me know if it’s any better.
