I love nature and all it’s gifts so naturally I like to incorporate them in my journals and ephemera as much as possible. I hope you enjoy today’s video. Please subscribe to my channel. I did laugh about the hawk in your freezer because my friends and I, in the early 90s, did the same thing . Our menfolk were amused but liked the quirkiness. Back then we beaded the quills and used them on our drums, medicine sticks and dream catchers. These feathers are still looking good to this day. It is amazing how strong they are. Just recently I used a pheasant's tail feather in my art journal. You can get stomach upset from handling feathers straight off the bird before freezing so wash your hands well after picking up birds or feathers. I loved the contrast of the lace with the feathers. These will look fantastic in or on journals.❤

Those are beautiful feathers. Yes, we should use beautiful things NATURE gives to us. No point to throw them away. Freezing I probably wouldn't have thought of. But it makes sense. I have lots of feathers from my ducks. They drop feathers every Fall. Too beautiful not to save & use! Clever girl. I love how you made them into tags. So natural and gorgeous!! Sewing them on is great idea! Funny thinking about your hubby finding dead bird in freezer!! Sounds like something I'd do. I have a very funny story, along these lines. But I won't share. It's as bad as dead bird in freezer! Haha! My son STILL kids me about it, 30 years later!! Thx for video. Austin,TX USA

Wow, you are so clever. It’s Winter here in NZ, but I’ll be out beach combing looking for feathers. 😊

I'm glad you knew about putting it in the freezer! I do that too when I find feathers--put them in a ziploc and in the freezer for a couple days. My friend who works at a natural history museum told me to do that to kill all the nasties.

There is nothing wrong or horrible about freezing and preserving nature. That is how many artists over the years have been able to be so realistic with there art. Noy only artists but doctors and other professionals. Good for you to be able to think of doing that and not letting a great specimen go to waste. Smart lady!!!!

Those are beautiful feathers! I love this idea. I use feathers in my bird/nest journals, but I usually just glue them to a page!

I love this tutorial and what you made! I have a collection of wonderful feathers I've picked up over the years. Certain raptors are protected and we are not legally permitted to keep theirs here in the states. Wink wink

Yes I have heard a lot about protected species and how you can’t keep the feathers. That’s perfectly understandable. Thank you for watching 😊

Well this is unique. Aren't those feathers amazing! Always such a surprise to see what nature has to offer. I don't know where you got that white ink cover, but I would think that would look very nice for a cover on the feather too. Always enjoy watching your work. I have found you on IG and now follow there. Really enjoyed pencil sketching with you and hope to do more of that too. TFS *Debbie*

The Indians say that if the bird is found face up, he is giving his feathers to you. Just something I was told😍

A small bird smacked into the window and fell to it's death inside the window well. I knew where it was and wanted it to decay a bit so I could use it's skull in a little science like vignette box. After a year or so I asked my husband to collect what he could. Now I have a little plastic container with a skull, and a few tiny bones. So no worries about your freezer hawk. Haha

I have worked with a Red-Tailed hawk and little owl for over 30 years now. I live in Illinois and here in the US even owning a raptor feather is illegal. Its because they are Federally and regionally protected. Just saying. Be careful of exposing too widely that you kept it. I found a road kill hawk. I removed one wing and it is in my freezer also. The rest of the hawk went into my woodland garden for a coyote we’ve been seeing. It’s the way of giving back from where it came. I also sent up a blessing and gratitude for the gift i’ve been given.

Uhh, even with those hawks being common in your area, you need to look into the legality of harvesting those feathers for your use without getting a license from the relevant wildlife agencies in your area. In many countries around the world, the keeping of feathers for many birds is tightly controlled as a direct result of birds being brought to extinction by being harvested for their feathers for the hat trade more than a hundred years ago. You may be in violation of the law for keeping, using, or selling those hawk feathers, and it could result in a hefty fine (and in some countries, jail time).

@thecreativecove6898 2 года назад
This is very true and I have looked into it. Where I live there was no violation by keeping the feathers. I fully respect laws that protect all wildlife. Thank you for your comment. It is very educational. Cheers

@@thecreativecove6898 That's great to know. I do love hawk feathers, they are very pretty, but sadly live in a country where I can't possess them without licensing for the feathers.
