At the start of campaigns we’ll often do rumors about PCs that will be handed out. It will be one completely true rumor, one that’s partially true, and one that’s completely false. Everyone writes theirs down on a card and we shuffle them and hand them out at the start of the game- everyone will get three. If a PC gets their own rumor they just put it back in the pile. Nobody shares who they got or what the rumor is, but they can bring it up in-character. It can lead to a lot of fun RPs at the start of a campaign! For one-shots we’ll usually reveal what the rumors are at the end. Most are a bit goofy but some have been really interesting or have straight-up revealed secret backstory stuff. My group hasn’t done it the past couple of games but this is making me want to start it up again. I’m totally stealing WIS/INT being able to reveal more info about the rumor. 👀
I like this method better than speaking a rumor aloud, because now it is the individual player's responsibility whether or not to share the information with the party.
Rumors are an integral part of the game, "Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades." But it goes with the roll and read method, and your method, Zipp, is SOOO much better!
I love this idea. My wife is tired of carrying the story as our other players are still new. This would help them alot, plus the PCs have 3 days of down time in town and this will be a great way to get them involved!
