I purchased a box full of old digital compact cameras from eBay to see how they performed in 2019.
Starting with the 1.3 Megapixel Fujifilm MX-1200, this baptism of fire proved that twenty years of technology advancement goes a long way ...
Footage shot on a Sony QX-1 with a 28mm f/2.8 M42 lens with additional footage from a Sony RX100M1.
All photos were taken as JPEGs and processed in Lightroom.

This was my first digital camera in 2000. Unfortunately I lost it around 2005 or 2006... I'm still sorry about it, even though it was a crappy camera. But I took a lot of memories with it. This one was definitely fun back in the day.

I had one of these when they first came out. It was like the first 1 meg camera under 300 bucks. My girlfriend got it and we used it on trips for a few years. It was pretty decent. I do remember being one of the first people with a digital camera on a trip in 2000 and everyone wanted to see it. They were amazed...as was I actually...

First digicam I had (and still have actually) was the Olympus C-420L which has a max resolution of 640x480. People were amazed by the technology. I was doing a photography course at the time, which was film based and after showing the cam to him, he said they'd never catch on. Think he's retired now :D - the best thing of this period of digicams is the designs they came up with, lots of weird and wonderful shapes, whereas now they all just look like cameras.

@@MartyGreenwell I actually still have the pic someone took of me at work with one of those. That was the very first, or one of them, as I remember and they weren't 300 bucks I believe I also remember.

great and informative video!! do you know the name of the memory card it takes? I recently purchased one of these cameras from a garage sale

The MX1200 uses Smartmedia, I think the maximum these cards went to was 128MB IIRC.

Hi I was wondering how you got the photos off the camera, did you use a card reader or did you use an adapter to your computer. Just wondering as I'm considering purchasing this to take out with friends (a bit like an eco-friendly disposable camera)

I used a different camera (An Olympus C5050) which has a smartmedia slot and a more standard USB mini connector (I've had issues with smartmedia cards in readers with modern PCs making the cards unreadable in camera). I wouldn't recommend these even as a cheap disposable camera though, given the smartmedia is too fragile to be reliable and you're not going to get anything usable out of this without a decent amount of light and a bit of luck. Hope that helps.

@@MartyGreenwell I have the same issue that makes my only 128m SM card unusable for my c4040 and my c5050 nor the hot swapping technic couldn't save it either.... I read that the Fuji/Toshiba camera is more immune to this, just purchased a mx-1200 and hope it works.

Bit of a long shot, but I recently picked up one of these on the cheap - I have little experience with cameras, does anyone know how I would get the photos onto my laptop now in the year 2023. Appreciate any help!

Easiest way is probably via a smart media card reader if you didn't get the USB cable with the camera (I've never seen a replacement in the wild). Something like this is what you're looking for: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172067173883
