Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are dead operating systems now, and Windows 10 is falling into that same category on October 14th, 2025, I am not saying that Windows 7 in that time frame was a bad operating system, I use to love Windows 7, but times have changed, the recommended operating system now is Windows 11.

I'm still using Windows 7 and everything works flawlessly, plays all the games and runs all software I need it to. I really don't want to upgrade to 10 or 11 - they're just so anti-user and privacy. In fact, I've been using this same installation of 7 since 2015. Rock-solid.

I can reboot my *2011* W7 laptop and have a browser open in 60-90 seconds. My 3 yr old W10 laptop is up to about 5 minutes now. When I first got it that process took about 30 seconds. With *every system update* it has gotten slower. As I mentioned in another post, it's ridiculous to have to install an entire new operating system every 6-12 months when you can't update the drivers from the computer manufacturers website.

This is one of the reasons why i use Windows 7, for example, Windows 10-11 telemetry, you got a lot of disk usage, i use hdd, and ssd. I don't want to degrade it, when i tried Windows 10 on this system, my hdd became an unstoppable sound generator. So, you know, "Security", everything can be secured by users, we do not need windows updates. Windows 7 With only Service Pack 1, working without any bugs. When i read a lot of answer about "Why do you use windows 7 in 2023?!" I feel confused, why other people want to change my choice, and others choice? For example, 4 years ago, every day a guy not stopped telling me "Update to windows 10, because Windows 7 is..." I asked to stop, he didn't stopped it. Probably it just microsoft hive mind category. Also, i don't want to give my source code, to microsoft. Things got a bit messed up and strange in 2023.

Windows 7 can be made to run "fine" on modern 2023 hardware, which would be interesting to see a video about. The only caveat in running a dual-boot Win7/Win10 machine (on an Intel 10th gen machine) is: CSM=enabled for Win7 to boot to desktop. Win7 can be installed on a modern system with AHCI mode & GPT formatted SSD & with CSM=disabled, but the final boot to desktop will require switching the bios setup to CSM=enabled. Also: if using an official Win7 installation disc, may require using a PS/2 mouse, until the correct USB driver can get installed.

I am writing this comment on my main Windows 7 PC which is my daily driver. This installation was originally a fresh Windows 2000, upgraded to Windows XP, upgraded to Windows 7. Basically, the same installation for the past 20 years. Can it be used safely in 2023? Yes, but it requires working behind a few layers of security like disabling features in the registry, disabling ALL Microsoft update access, and installing EVERYTHING in offline mode. The other 9 PCs in my office all run Linux Mint, and for what it's worth, Mint is as easy to use as Windows 7 with the added bonus of better security. You're asking why I stay with Windows 7? Investment is why. Over 20 years, I've invested in a ton of software at full retail price. Much of it will no longer install on Windows 10 as registration servers are no longer online. Much of that software is coding and graphical development apps that provide functions that are not available in modern counterparts. Windows 7 is the solution.

I do agree that MS Windows 7 was the best OS they ever made. I still have a 2nd gen i7 running this OS and it will continue as long as I have a supported anti-virus. I get the Windows update problem and raise you the Intel CPU flaws. The funny part was MS Windows 10, which chased us into Linux and upgrades to AMD based systems. Our biggest problem was locating printers and scanners with Linux support. Lucky timing there, as we're still printing and running Linux (MINT /Cinnamon) all these years onward. While I will happily help friends get into Linux, I won't tell you or anyone else that they have to move to Linux, as there are way too many variables to each individual situation that will spell success or failure with Linux.

Windows 7 is by far in my opinion the best OS that microsoft ever released and theres a reason its still being used today despite support ending in 2020. Its simple and comes with none of the spyware or bloat that was introduced in 10 and 11. 7 was my main OS up until microsoft pulled the plug on it. I have to use win 10 for work now but i use kubuntu linux as my personal main OS. Despite win 7 being so good, i cannot really justify using it in 2023/2024 due to their not being any official security pstches for many years now. I also know that 2024 will be the last year of support for several programs including firefox and also for any gamers out there, valve is also cutting windows 7 steam support in 2024 as well. Despite how brilliant this OS has been and how its held up over the years, more and more programs are going to continue ending support therefore eventually upgrading to 10 and 11 will be essential to keep using your pc's. Its a shame but for an OS thats over a decade old its had a very good run! If you dont want to upgrade now might be the time to consider linux.

windows 7 is way better than any linux distro could hope. I say this as a linux user. the closest in terms of polish, stability, and speed is elementary os and gnome, but both miss basic features. Like why do we need admin permissions just to mount a fucking disk? why does linux keep fucking the average person over? oh right, because its for servers. linux's main use case is servers.

Unfortunately, I had to sell my Oculus, because I absolutely REFUSE to have 10 on my machine. Not even dual booting. With that said, there MIGHT be a way to install a much older driver, and block communications with Oculus's servers, so you can use your Oculus on 7, although I only saw it after I sold it already. If I ever buy an old Oculus again (when I have the money), I will try to get it working on 7.

😍😍😍I love the Aero Glass Design still. Miss it very much. Yes Windows 7 was amazing and I was using it quite long until Windows 10 1803 or 1809 when the Dark mode got introduced. And 10 was much more reliable and robust no dll errors no bluescreens I have had no issues with Windows 10! Window 11 is nice I like it but it’s not so amazing actually. I can use it on my pc but I hope windows 12 will fix a lot of things.

Thanks for the video, Surfshark. Because I had been SO frustrated with new laptops I've purchased since the Windows 7 days, I bought a brand new DELL two years ago that had Windows 7, just like my 18" Fujitsu laptop that I originally bought back in 2009. The only problem with the new DELL with Windows 7 is, it doesn't have Windows Live Photo Gallery? Windows Live Photo Gallery is one of the main reasons why I like Windows 7 so much, besides it works SO well with my scanners, printers, etc. I love Windows 7 and will always use it. The operating system that I despise the most: Windows 10! It is the most user unfriendly system I've ever used.

I still use Windows 7 on my main machine. Most of my other machines (I am a bit of a hoarder, have probably around 50 computers) are running XP. Windows 7 is good, I will give it that, but I have never liked it as much as Windows XP. Windows XP can run on extremely low power machines and still preform quite well. Windows 7 is sort of like Vista in the sense that it will run on low power machines, but anything less than like a core 2 duo is going to be a pretty painful experience. That is one of many reasons I prefer XP. I wish there was some better software support and I absolutely would still use it on my main machine as well.

Despite it being a laptop, I don’t think you can do much with the graphics. Try upgrading the processor, and Ram! I have an Optiplex 755 that had a Core 2 Duo and 4GB ddr2 ram. I upgraded the processor to a core 2 quad, which is literally a core 2 duo with 2 more cores on a chip. I added an older nvidia gt 1030, and performance was unbelievable for this 2007 machine. It’s still rocking a 500GB HDD, and 667 ddr2 ram, but using Firefox and chrome, it’s as fast as my windows 11 computer. There’s barely any differences. These old machines are good paths to take instead of certain Chromebooks

I love how Windows 7 used to accept EVERY single color you added to it, disabling Aero it could be very soft or very strong colors, while with Aero, it also accepted most colors too, and now on Windows 11, if you try to add a very deep blue to you task bar windows say the color is not supported. You know something is wrong when the newest system has silly limitations like this that the older system never had from the very release day. Windows 7 overall is a excellency level MS should ALWAYS aim for, in every single aspect ofit. I'm tired of receiving new Windows versions that slooooowly update functions, the fact that the Control panel from VISTA is still present in 11, and they slowly add one or two features every now and then to the new config menu, while they keep focusing fucking AI co-pilot integration instead of focusing on making the system consistent also annoys me to a level. I miss the times where you waited 5 years for a new Windows, and when it was released, it was also CONSISTENT instead of small improvements over the previous versions. W11 in a lot of ways feels more like a downgrade when I revisit Windows 7 which is insane. And mate, we still are installing themes and baking stuff on Windows 11 to make it look like Windows 7. Aero is beautiful, MS ditched it, and what we have now is a poor flat imitation of that. Even the start menu that has a bit of it remaining there has so little transparency, it's like a joke. Want to see for yourself? Disable the transparency effects from your windows. And you'll see ALMOST no difference. AT ALL.
