Hi there! I was looking for a video that summarizes the USMLE and UKMLA as these were what were discussed in my class as an option to apply through to practice in those respective countries. We discussed the Canadian and Australian options as well. I only realized halfway through this video that it’s a year old and was surprised as to how much has changed over the span of 1 year with these medical licensing exams. USMLE step 1 is now a pass/fail exam and there is a UKMLA which will be introduced a year before I graduate. Still, this was an informative video but will try and find a more comprehensive video on the exam contents for both in due time. Thank you ✨.

I'm a bit confused, I understood in your video that there are specialties in which you don't need to present MRCP? I am interested in doing anesthesiology in the UK but I don't know if I have to present MRCP after PLAB
@lavnya70

MRCP is not needed for anaesthetics. MRCP is suitable for senior doctors who wants to pursue the higher medical specialties like gastroenterology, dermatology, cardiology, neurology, renal medicine, respiratory etc. MRCP is not needed for other specialties like surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, general practice, anaesthetics, radiology etc.

Dr.Lavnya, Very nicely explained video. Need your advice for my daughter. She is finishing MS Anaesthesia in 2 months from Delhi. She is a US citizen. She doesn"t want to do residency again to practice in USA. 1..Is there any way of getting residency waiver for USA ? 2. Which country is ideally suited for her specialization, to go by mere taking a licensing exam only, and not doing the residency? 3. Any fellowship you could suggest to her for her specialisation, which is in demand now and well paying, and the country? Will appreciate your sincere advice.

Hi Lavnya, First of all let me congratulate you for this excellent video. I have few doubts, kindly help me in clearing those. Firstly, how to get into specialty training after PLAB? Is there some selection criteria? If yes, then is it your MBBS marks for or some selection criteria related to FY2 or something else like say research work etc.. Secondly, how difficult is the selection criteria for paediatrics ? Thirdly and most importantly, what I want to know is after clearing PLAB, can I certainly getting into a specialty training of my choice, unlike the type of uncertainty we get to see in USMLE. Thanking you in anticipation.

Yes, as you have completed MRCP- you can be registered with the GMC. With regards to specialty training in the UK- there is no age limit. As long as you are interested in that specialty and have a good cv/portfolio- you should have a chance of getting in. Have you done all/part of cardiology specilaty/pg training? If you have done pg in cardiology previously- you could try and enter the specialist register via the cesr route.

Since you have done specialty training/pg in India- you can become a paediatric consultant in UK via the CESR route. So you do not have to retrain or do specialty training/pg in UK. Hi, after PLAB and working as an SHO, you do not need any other exams prior to applying for further training. Take the time to decide on what specialty you want to do. Then apply for the specialties you want to do. No exams are required for the application. Once you are in the specialty training programme, you will be required to complete the specific exams for that specialty. Long days are 12 hours. All hours are calculated and banded according to the new junior doctors contract.
