“Soccer nepotism” exists at all levels of U.S. soccer. The USSF doesn’t care about the men’s national team. They run it like a high school program and they’re more concerned about using the sport as a mouthpiece for ideological issues than putting a winning product in the field. And at the same time they support and promote a man who actually kicked a woman (his wife) and even tried to cover it up! The USSF has their head so far up their a$$3s it’s impossible to see any light. The mainstream media, the youth program, the culture surrounding the game is so annoying and petty. The fact GGG was not fired after the Panama debacle is beyond me. Anyway nice to hear a voice from reason. Bash knows more about the game than all the media and coaches involved with US soccer. And he’s a friggin Canadian basketball legend. wtf?????

Make Football and Basketball lame to play and all the athletes will play soccer and the world will bow at our feet. Look at France. All of their best athletes play soccer. Lebron and Durant would steam roll Mbappe and Kounde. Kevin Garnett in Goal. Ben Wallace and Rodman as CBs. Anthony Davis, Durant mF or defenders. Micheal Jordan as the #9. Tyrek hill and Terrell Owen’s as wingers. Tom Brady, drew brees, mike Vick as Midfielders. It’s a wrap

There's a reason why those of us who actually pay attention to the sport beyond our own shores called for him not to be rehired in the first place. Retaining Callaghan would have been a far better option. Under his brief tenure we could see the germination of an identity, but Gregg came along and ended all that. Identity is the starting point in this sport, no matter the talent on the pitch or expectations knowing what your style is and backing it up with hard work and results leads to consistency and toughness. Gregg doesn't get that, which is why over the last five years no one has been able to pinpoint who or what we are as a national side. Fact is he needs to go, either step down or sacked. We cannot afford to lose any time in the lead up to 2026 with him remaining in the role. He's not good enough.

It’s beyond me that a soccer federation so concerned about “gender equality” and use the sport for their ideological plights…rehired, supports and protects a man who admits to kicking his wife. Oh….but he’s friends with some of the “leaders” of this team…blah blah blah. Only in America is it up a clique of players who gets to be head coach. And those players were the worst examples of underachieving. In the past year Red cards, lack of focus, lack of heart, unable to make routine passes, mistakes in the mid field, keeper not able to play out of the back end, ref blaming, finger pointing and at the end of the day “I don’t see anything wrong with the direction”, says Turner who also needs to be replaced. It’s infuriating!!!!! But the players are all talking like they are enjoying their summer vacation I’m done!!!!!!

The players are NOT poor. No way in hell that these clubs (Serie A, EPL, Bundisliga, etc etc) are being duped by the individual talents of the U.S. players who are playing on these clubs. Bot only that, but they don’t have discipline or attitude issues! Most of them are working their tails off and earning playing time!. It’s a business in Europe and cream rises the top. When that cream comes back to their national team they sink to the bottom, coagulate, and turn into that lumpy gross cheese and ruins the cereal bowl and ruins your morning! This lumpy cheese is what GGG is churning! Yes the players are also to blame. But there is more talent and depth than I can ever remember! Think about it!!!!

This is going to be a long comment but I think these are the issues with football (soccer) in the USA from an outsider's/neutral perspective. Steve Nash is spot on, footballing culture is just not there in the USA for everything he already mentioned and also for the following: 1. Why the heck MLS does not stop during fifa international breaks? 2. You have a pay to play system which absolutelly limits your talent pool imo. Just as an example, you would have missed out of Maradona if he was from USA because he was poor as f**k 3. You don't have relegations nor promotions, which might also be related to point 2, which limits competition 4. You care more about your stadiums being magnificent, huge, luxurious and stunning for fans and the outside look than for the pitches themselves being at least decent in a major tournament 5. There is some arrogance as well in the mix, you think that some of your players are better than they actually are and you think you should do way better than what in reallity you can (even though I do think you should be doing better to some degree) 6. Today I saw Ronaldo crying after missing a penalty in a game that ultimatelly they did win but I didn't see any of your players angry or sad or pissed or anything close to that after getting grouped, where is the passion?!?! 7. You don't fill the stands at home in a tournament you had high expectations for while most of the other nations participating outnumber you or at least match your numbers even if it is way more expensive for them and have to travel a lot to be there. 8. You do have a terrible manager, but you want to get klopp, pep or ancelotti next which will probably improve USA's football to some degree but will not fix the major issues you have right now. I could go on and on and on but the point here is that for now at least you don't have a footballing culture that could promote the right way, improve, support and elevate the sport.

The US sporting landscape is different than the rest of the world. Here we have 4 other major established leagues. We have a national past time. MLS has to fight for network coverage, stadium usage, and everything else. Because of all these leagues MLS plays on a different schedule than the rest of the world. We don't have pro/rel because of everything mentioned above... And the talent pool just isn't there. Think about European leagues that have been established for over 100 years to build that infrastructure and player pool. MLS has been around for 30 years. And it has made MAJOR strides, but it's just not on par yet... Keep in mind we've already had a failed league. The stadiums need to be amazing because again, look at the competition of MLB and NFL stadiums. Some of the biggest and best in the world. Look at the NFL... it's worth more than every other soccer league in the world.... COMBINED. Your points are the same points that have been made year after year after year. It's nothing new. But this is the landscape and challenges soccer has to succeed in the US. And trust me, as someone who attended World Cup 94 and saw MLS born, the difference is night and day. It has grown exponentially over its time. It just needs more time. I grew up with friends that HATED soccer. I was constantly made fun of for playing that other sport. But you know what? Those same friends now can't wait to talk to me about the Manchester Derby, or La Liga. We still have a ways to go, but we're definitely on the right course. Except for Berhalter. Worst US Coach I've seen in my lifetime. Bruce Arena, Steve Sampson, Bora Milutinovic, Jurgen Kinsmann, Bob Bradley... Berhalter is BY FAR the worst coach we've hired. It's pathetic.

1) But, I don't see the Brasilerao stopped right now either so - shrug on this one. League/owners' call tbh. 2) Agreed 3) It is what it is and it will never change. I heard Mexico wants to change to such a system as well. 4) TBH, a lot of games were in American Football stadiums since they hold more fans I guess. Can't really blame the organizers on that but the complaints the grass are valid! 5) Yup. To the average fan they might think "Joe Doe plays in Italy/Germany/England!!!" but sitting on the bench isn't playing in those leagues. 6) Yeah, a little soft. The USMNT definitely needs more of a fighting spirit (which includes playing rougher). That's on the coach and players not instilling that. 7) People go to see Messi - lol. The USMNT, on a great day, might rank around #30; I know, it can occasionally punch above its weight but every team in the world can do that too. 'Murica only backs winners (or underdogs with a chance to win: see 1980's Miracle on Ice). 8) I don't think he's a terrible manager but he is the wrong manager for the USMNT. As is often the case, the country manager position demands specific talents that aren't needed at the club level and vice-versa. The US will never be a football/soccer nation first. At least not in our lifetimes and then some. Too many other sports taking the eyes (and money!) that are played at the highest world levels (and, yes, I know that American Football isn't really played to a big level elsewhere and baseball only to some level).

Good post, and you're right about a lot. But most of what you've posted isn't changing, ever. Especially, pro/rel and pay to play structure. Also, the US is not getting Klopp, Pep, Don Carlo or anyone on that level. Not only would it not make any sense for them to come here, when they can easily get bigger and better jobs. It would cost US Soccer a huge wage to get them to take the job. Because of US Soccerd by-laws, they have to pay the men's and women's coaches the same salary. So, if you give Klopp 10-12 million per, which is what it would take, they also have to pay the women's coach the same.

It’s mental to hear the false positivity of ‘look how far the US has come’ .. why’s every other country progressing faster? Look at Slovakia, Slovenia etc - their players, how they play, technical abilities etc compared to the US team. The coaching standards in the states is shocking, and the players are massively over hyped, but the biggest reason is pay to play does not work and will never work. This is a working class game that currently is being run as a for-profit system that funnels a handful of talented rich kids to the professional game. The problem is much deeper than the manager - who is albeit useless - it’s the very structure of the American development model. Also. One of the only players who consistently performed for his club (and actually scored goals) this past season was Hadji Wright, who somehow barely played in the 3 group stage matches. Football in America is in bad shape and needs fixing by people who’ve actually played the game and understand why it’s so much more successful in virtually every other country in the world.
@LilRedRasta
@LilRedRasta 6 дней назад
You’re wrong about our players not playing well for their clubs. Of course if you haven’t followed them all, which I suspect you haven’t, you wouldn’t know that. Sargent did well for Norwich. As did Pepi, Jedi, Richards, Ream, Mckennie, Scally, and Pulisic. Weah came of the bench regularly for Juve. Musah for AC Milan. Not the best season for those two, but not horrible. Adam’s was injured but he was one of Leeds best players last time he got regular minutes. If Dest was healthy he had a good season as well. And we still have guys like Luca De la Torre who we refuse to use even though he starts regularly in La Liga. The manager has no clue out to get the best out of his players. That’s the difference.
@Smooterino

Maybe I'm missing something, but how are Slovakia/Slovenia really progressing faster? They made it out of the group stage of their continent's tournaments. @@Smooterino because look at how they play. They have a style, their players are all established pros. They are more technically and tactically competent than the US. The U.S is genuinely on par with the likes of Ireland and Wales - which is a disgrace considering the difference in money, facilities etc. The European teams all are on a different level - because their development systems are better, and their professional leagues are set up properly. Pay to play, not having relegation etc has turned this sport into another entertainment entity in America rather than a proper game that rewards competition, funneling the best players to the top etc.
@LilRedRasta
@LilRedRasta 6 дней назад
@@SamDorf-ed6ih Yes. Majority of them were regular starters for their clubs. So, they should be in form. Even the ones on the bench. For example Cardoso was a locked in starter in La liga. Luca De la Torre as well. I'm guessing that you didn't follow each player. I did somewhat. Richards was injured for a good portion of the season, but ended the season starting for Palace. Ream and Jedi are staples at Fullham. Mckennie was objectively one of Juve's best players this year. The same goes for Pulisic at Milan. Adams was injured but before he got injured he was starting for Bournemouth and was even man of the match. Not a surprise since he was one of Leeds best players in the prem. Scally was a regular starter in the Bundesliga. Dest was a locked in starter before his injury in the dutch league. Also, goals aren't the benchmark for success. Only strikers is that the case. Haji got goals. Sargent got goals. Pepi has scored 7 goals in the dutch league in 27 appearances. The only ones who weren't getting regular minutes (even off the bench) was Turner, Balogun, and Gio. Weah and musah were bench players but still got a good amount of minutes. So out of the starting 11, 3 players probably weren't super fit, 3 (including Adams) probably were fit, but hadn't played many full games, and the other 5 were fit. So, about half the squad. Still, not an excuse because we had bench players who WERE fit. Like Cardoso. That's on the manager if they were gassed.

As a British person I never believed the moniker that this current generation is the strongest US generation. They are the most technical because they are the first generation to emerge from the MLS and world academies system. I don’t see a McBride, Dempsey, Claudio Reyna, Beadsley,, Howard, Friedel or Donovan who were stars in their top 5 league clubs. A lot of people say they have more Americans in big European teams, but I think this is because European clubs see the commercial value in American players now, which wasn’t the case before. It didn’t go unnoticed in the Europe that when Pulisic joined Chelsea, the Premier League TV contract increased by four times it’s value in the USA, so big clubs are buying Americans to increase the value of their TV rights in the USA. There is also a lot more American owned teams in Europe now, and American owned teams tend to buy Americans for commercial reasons too. So,I think more Americans in top 5 leagues is more to do with commercial value than quality. I also think US trying to play this technical passing game, just makes the USA easier for big teams to beat. USA players are not at technically gifted as the players from the top nations who don’t have pay to play and have a street soccer culture that produces more technical players. Let’s be real Pulisic the so called greatest American player ever, would not start in the French, Spanish, Brazilian, Argentina, German, Portugal or even the England team. Why is the USA trying to play passing technical game other countries will always be superior than them at? That is why this generation not had any major wins against big teams like past generations. The traditional strengths of the US players were defensive organisation, grittiness, work rate and raw athleticism. But does the USA have those players with all MLS academies teaching American kids tiki-taka football? The USA should be playing to these strengths. Klinsmann gets a not of criticism in the US soccer media because he called out American soccer problems and there were people in American soccer waiting for him to fail when he was US coach because he wanted to shake up the status quo and a lot of people in US soccer have vested interests to keep things the same. But I still think his USMNT was the strongest USA team I have ever seen, who would regularly beat big names home and away because they what they were good at and what they weren’t good at and played to these strengths.

I think the disappointment is over done. The USA has a solid team but it lacks superstars. Most of the great nations that succeed have superstars: players that can will an impact on a match. Without one red card you would have likely tied or beat Panama and would now be going through and falling to Brazil or Colombia. If you take away all the home field advantage the USA plays in (and its more than any other country in the world), the USMNT is a top 25 team, no more. Top 25 teams are competitive and can win against many on any given day, but they can't win Copa America or World Cups. For the USA to be a true top 10 team, you need a superstar. Just think how good the USA or say Canada might be if Messi was playing in the midfield! Let's be honest. Canada and Panama are both top 50 teams, with Canada having the potential of maybe reaching top 25 by 2026. And the USA is only marginally better. The sooner Americans understand this, the easier it will be to accept varied success on the World Stage. Great to hear from Steve Nash - one of Canada's great sportsmen.

The main problem with the US beyond mobbed-up refs and inept, nepotistic coaches is that they just can't do the simple things well when they play together. There's a collective gasp whenever the ball is played back to Turner. First touches go flying yards away and are intercepted. The passing and movement of players up the field is slow, sloppy and purposeless. It's simply not good enough. This is the direct result of the corrupt USSF, pay-to-play and generations of potential talent squandered.

VAR is considerably more accurate. I think he was offsides for that goal. But, in the end, Panama won 3-1 and the USA only had 2 shots on goal?! These players in the USMNT are not consistent enough. With pay to play in the USA, we are not guaranteed our best soccer players.

If England is a lambo, the US is a geo metro. Adoration and emotional safety are a secondary quality you should be looking for in a football manager and why at the end of the day they are content to turn in these apathetic "we should have done better" performances time and time again. There is no expectation of greatness or refusal to settle in the current regime, and there is no participation trophy in professional football. But there is hope, gio reyna is a glimpe into the future of american football, maybe not the final product but hes the first player ive seen in an american kit who is creative and dynamic on a world scale, easily negated by the lack of quality around him but still there nonetheless. The first of a new breed. Klinsmann may have been ahead of his time, looking (far) into the future but i agree with his sentiment. Play the football we have to until we can play the football we want - "10 forward and 10 back". Attainable through peristence and brutal honesty. This manager is not good enough and this is not the golden generation. I feel for these players as they have the weight of a great nation put on their shoulders without the ability to deliver, but i guess as long as they feel safe and happy they can keep chugging along unphased by the soul crushing disappointment we all feel.

It’s a wrap

Everybody just blame all about the coach, but no one care or talk about the terrible player, he's name is Weah, tge guy with number 21 .In this copa 2924,US team was playing good,until the match against Panama, and Panama is under dog team if compare with US team,Panama have no chance to win this match,until this guy,the fucking Weah punch Panama player for no reason, just for the red card,then make US team became weaknesses team,and lose the game,tgen ofcourse, very hard for team when next game,they have to facing URUGUAY, the very strong team this season...I think the U.S Soccer must open case ,to investigate Weah action, because i think there's only one reason he punch Panama player is he's selling the game,selling US team...That's the only reason he did that,he did that with purpose, to get red card,make US team played down players, helped Panama a big chance to win over...U.S Soccer must investigate and permanent ban him from playing soccer for ,permanent baned for the rest of his career...This guy not deserve to play soccer anymore, not deserve play for tge Nation team..

Except…..In 94 our SOCCER team beat Colombia and we advanced out of a good group. In 95 our Soccer team beat Argentina 3-0, then beat a GOOD Mexico to go the semis, and barely lost to Brazil 1-0. In 2003 Our Soccer team beat a TOP Portugal team 3-2 and went on to the 1/4 finals and nearly beat a much better Germany who went to the finals. And we called it SOCCER than too! Our SOCCER team advanced out of their group in 2010 in the group of death etc etc etc. our calling it SOCCER has never been the issue! . Not any more than in Latin America it’s spelled and pronounced Futbol. I know you just started watching or know nothing about US SOCCER, so I’m glad I could be here to teach you. Semantics are not the problem!!!!

Ref was an evil who threw entire US team off. He was either an imbecile or related to Uruguay and sided with Uruguay. Gave US the cheeze after getting stepped on, stopped US attack for calling late foul call and didn't call the offside( 2 ) for that 1 Uruguay goal. This is just like that Maning referee giving out 5 yellow cards to South Korea for 1st game at Asian Cup game 2024.

Blame it on the refs. If that doesn’t work blame it on the field, or it was too hot ….etc etc. the sport in this country is being managed and taught by a bunch nitwits who coddle the players, depended on manicured fields and over critique the refs and officials and starting time of games etc etc. parents and coaches are only concerned with winning scholies to their offspring to liberal arts colleges! Players around the world deal with bad refs, bad fields, lack of resources and overcome that!!!!! . Berhalter has to go - now - for more reasons than I can list here. There were a couple of bright spots for the US, mainly the midfield. Uruguay's midfield is their strength and the US team pretty much neutralized them. The big failure was in not creating chances or finishing the few they did create. What we did see is more of what the true identity of the US team historically has been and needs to be again - aggressive, attacking (but with quality and skill) and fast transitions to defense and regaining possession. Too many dark spots to list but that is where a new and better coach really is needed.
