USS The Sullivans taking on water rapidly

As of Thursday morning, USS The Sullivans is taking on water rapidly, tilting in the water, appearing as if it was resting against the pier.
The Sullivans is no longer moving and is in 'stable,' according to U.S. Coast Guard Commander Bill McKinstry.
He says it may appear as though the ship is moving right now, but that's actually just the seiche, when water levels rise due to wind or sudden changes in atmospheric pressure.
Also on day three of trying to save The Sullivans, divers are now handling contaminants coming from the ship. Those include diesel and oil that have been with the Sullivans since it was in operation.
"Back in 1977 when the ship came in, the Navy doesn't always bring it in as clean as we would like it to be. We accepted the responsibilities when we took ownership of the ship. However, as things progress, we want to make sure that we have it as clean and environmentally safe as possible," said Paul Marzello, president and CEO of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park.

@markgolden6265

It’s not treated poorly. Naval ships need to be dry docked throughout there time on the seas. All wind there way to Naval yards for repairs. The salt water. They are not made for fresh water that has huge temperature changes and freezes. Buffalo’s harbor is cold and rapid running. So Ice is hitting the ships haul. If you go directly out it’s the Niagara River going towards Niagara Falls.

When this ship started taking on water, was anyone around to secure the hatches down below to contain the area on board where the weight of the water could not sink this vessel? Then you apply positive pressure in the areas where there is water to force it out. The local soda bottling company's can make sealed cans with no fluid that can be fed into the ships hull to displace the water and allow it to float as well.

She isn't down by the bow or the stern, so it seems the source of flooding is in the engineering spaces roughly amidship (a big guess) so, at least, there would be room to work. I'm no expert but that looks like a garden water hose trying to pump water overboard. When I was in the Navy (back in the '70s) we had portable gasoline powered pumps call a P-250. Those units could pump 250 gallons a minute and it took a number of strong guys to hold the hose releasing the water. In bootcamp we had a training course in firefighting and one of the exercises was to gain control of a loose hose then bend/crimp it to shut off the water flow. Believe you me it was no small task. I would think several of these loaned by the Navy would help greatly. I hope it can be salvaged.

Heida herself is majestic, sleek, smooth and rocked oh so gently in little protected harbour. She must have cruised at some serious speed. We went down in just about every area right to the keel. The keepers were kind enough to educate us on all aspects and she comes with her own storied past. The keepers also threw a few powered bags in forward guns. The story here is the Sullivans and what these ships mean for Buffalo our neighbour. All these ships should be saved but if you look at ships like Texas the funding is hard. Meanwhile they have been scrapping major aircraft carriers that have fought in serious battles. Popular ships including battleships of this age have nowhere to go or big money to turn them into museums. The Queen Mary is almost suffering a serious issue if no attention is paid.

The Fletcher Class destroyers are classed as 2100 ton displacement, essentially the weight of the ship. The USS Kidd at Baton Rouge, a similar destroyer, has concrete blocks casted in place for the hull to rest on, like being in dry dock when the Mississippi River is loo low to float the ship. There are also large blocks of zinc, called anodes, for cathodic protection of the ships hull. The blocks are sacrificial which means they have to be replaced periodically as they wear away. Ships do rust and corrode even in fresh water. I served aboard the USS Carpenter DD-825, Pineapple Fleet, Pearl Harbor, HI. Heart breaking to see The Sullivans half submerged.
