What a video, we must have passed each other at some point. We were headed the other direction. Glad we didn’t go to valley of the gods! We had an amazing campsite in cathedral valley on blm, I was super nervous about finding camp for 15 rigs the night of the eclipse, but found it nearly abandoned. Luckily there was a gatekeeper wash that kept the vans out of our spot. Many of the spots you showed are already on my list of possible sites to camp. We’ll be back soon to explore them in more detail. Hole in the rock road was BRUTAL with washboards. Our trail popped out south of escalate on that oof. Other than that it was quiet up from page till then.

@@RevereOverlandthere are essentially 2 styles of small bore valve core., short and long you have short. For sure. He had two cameras set up - one right in front of Justin’s time lapse, and the other out on the spit of land. It also meant no one else could go out there for a picture of themselves!

We also camped on Cedar Mesa for the eclipse, probably not far from you. A concern is that the video appears to show that this group drove on the fragile cryptobiotic crust on the mesa, breaking a cardindinal rule of canyon country travel. Also, the video makes it appear the group made a new campsite on the mesa where none of any consequence previously existed. If correct, both are behaviors that are destructive and lead to public land closures. Please do not do the same.

I could see anyone traveling the back roads for fun could easily run into some highly toxic areas that have not been marked yet or may never will be marked. I haven't seen too many youtubes of out of the way places big terribly contaminated and horribly dangerous to anybody hiking or driving through. Back country so enjoyed by all kinds ohh overlanders could easily be in contaminated areas that no one knows about yet.

Announcing dangerously contaminated areas seems to not be in the purview of the military or big corporations. (I'm going to pre-qualify this, Matthew: this is a snarky reply to your comment) I get what it’s all about… but people, stumbling on content that they watch for a few minutes, deciding they don’t care for it or thinking that it’s stupid or even that it’s ridiculous, all while having 114 MILLION other RU-vid channels they can watch instead, yet thinking they’re entitled to share their negative and insulting subjective opinion about someone else’s creative work makes it obvious how ridiculous and self-important we indeed are as a culture LOL (but not really LOL). Sorry Matthew, you hit a chord with me. As a content creator myself, I am aware of the vast amount of time spent on a project like this - hours upon hours upon hours. You literally pour yourself into the filming and editing, all in the hopes of creating something that will uplift people, expose them to landscapes and places they may never have been, allow them to live vicariously through you when they themselves cannot get out, inform on a piece of gear they were considering buying, encourage them to get out and explore, and really take them along on the journey with you. And if we accomplish even simply entertaining someone, it’s a win! Yet there are always those who, having 114 million other options to watch, will find your channel, not get it or think it’s “ridiculous” and give it a thumbs down or leave a demeaning comment, which really takes the wind out of your sails. All this to ask, “Why Matthew?!” Why the need to comment? Were you hoping for an enlightening response that will turn the “light bulb” on for you as to why Overland and Camping vlogging is appealing to almost 100K people who really enjoy the content of this channel? Here’s a little feedback for you Matthew: you don’t need to always share your thoughts and opinions on things. In fact, most of the time, it’s probably wise to keep them to yourself… unless they are encouraging and/or constructive, which I’m sure the women in your life will affirm. Rob, you’re killing it man. Beautiful footage and editing, great storyline and vlogging. Keep it up my friend!

Annular solar eclipse is such a different experience to a total solar eclipse. There is still so much light abound despite the Sun almost blocked. And the "ring of fire" looks cool. In April this year (2023), we experienced in Australia (at Ningaloo) a total solar eclipse. Like you mentioned, it got cold quickly, but got much darker, and while we didn't get a "ring of fire" we got a breathtaking view of the Sun's corona, and with very powerful telescopes can even see some solar flares. Regarding your stuck air valve, try positioning your tyre w/the valve on top. That way when you air up/down the beads are at the opposite end (ie. bottom). Another episode with great use of drone footage to enhance the storytelling.👍

We had a total eclipse here in 2017 which was awesome. There's another early next year that I'm making plans to view! I tried having the valve at the top the last time and somehow it still got jammed. I don't really understand how, but I think it's something to do with the non-OEM valve that's on that tire.

The trip would more than likely be mid September if that would factor into your decision.

57k miles with no engine issues. I did have a piece of trim fall off, but that’s all.

Great video! Sad i missed the eclipse. Did you have to get a permit to fly in the bears ears and glen canyon nat. Rec and monuments? Beauty footage

The only place drone permits are required in Utah is Utah state parks. Other than that, you’re either allowed to or you aren’t. Glen Canyon NRA does not allow drones, but we weren’t in the NRA. Bear Ears is all BLM and national forest, so with the exception of the Dark Canyon Wilderness, drones are allowed.

Bad for the dirt to step on it? 🤣
@RevereOverland
@RevereOverland 6 месяцев назад
Yes, very much so. Stepping on it destroys the biological crust that’s holding it together, which then allows the next rain storm to wash it away. It takes up to 15 years for the biological crust to form.

How do you learn these things? Is there a guidebook specifically for overlanders that calls out where to go and what to look out for? @@RevereOverland

I just learned that from visiting the national park visitor centers as a kid

It's cryptobiotic soil. It's a living organism. It stabilizes the soil and helps prevent erosion. So yes it's important to not damage the soil and what it does for our ecosystem.
